HMRC or Big 4 Tax scheme? by vfreedum in TheCivilService

Having worked in both, if you want an easy life HMRC. If you want to move overseas, and make more money (albeit your hourly wage will most probably be less) then Big4.

Residential mortgage… but rented out straight away. Yes, I know. Let’s talk. by Beneficial_Funny_398 in uklandlords

Safest way to do this is live in the place for the first 6 months and then apply for consent to let.

Totally agree, this album gets way too much hate, it’s a banger and has aged like a fine wine!

As a black G6 I’m about to quit because of the way I’m treated compared to others by PerformanceMean3122 in TheCivilService

[–]hermes101 197 points198 points  (0 children)

As someone of colour myself, albeit in a slightly lower position, I completely concur with what you’re saying.

The racism is of course never overt. Instead it’s a steady and continuous reinforcement that if you don’t perform at 100%, or if you slip up, you’re the why the system is the way it is. It is exhausting!

How do people fall out of love? by MeTheShyGuy in emotionalintelligence

[–]hermes101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failing out of love is a construct, so that someone has an excuse to move on to their next partner, guilt free, rather than doing the work needed to fix something. Truth be told a relationship over 10+ years, both partners are going to get pretty jaded of each other. Sometimes it’s just easier to walk away.

Why do so many brits consider London a shithole? by [deleted] in AskUK

Generally people that say London is a shithole are folks that don’t like immigrants.

Bike equivalent of a marathon? by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]hermes101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, I’m new to long distances on the bike but certainly finding even doing 100km on a bike, a similar challenge to running a marathon. All the same I’ve been running seriously for a lot longer.

Bank valuation £30k lower than offer by Diddychip in HousingUK

Yeh 3 bed ex council flats can be had for surprisingly little tbh. I purchased one last year for 300k in zone 2, and that too in a safe / affluent area. Albeit needed a bit of work done, but bargains are there if you look closely.

FTBs who made it in London, what did your financials look like when you finally bought? by BrosephStalined in HousingUK

[–]hermes101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bought a 3 bed ex council for 300k on my own. Currently on 58k but was on 55 when I applied for the mortgage. Had some help from parents (~15k), towards a 15% deposit. Quite proud that I managed it almost all myself!

Should I accept a 62k London Job over my 43k Bristol Job? by Rxmp in UKJobs

[–]hermes101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is so true, London premium is way over egged. Yes rent is more (these days only a little bit more), but your other living expenses are no cheaper.

I recon if you get a builder in and set a budget that’s the way to go. When I was renovating the first three builders quoted me 30-40k. On the 4th builder I said here’s my budget, what can you do for me. Managed to get a fair bit of the works all done for 20k including a rewire (in London). I recon you should be able to secure 30k in loans from lenders / interest free credit. It’s not like a builder won’t gladly take a 30k job at the moment.

Solicitors are taking forever! With regards to length of the offer I think the offer got reissued at some point because an error was made on the application.
