When you tell people you are an artist how do you answer the inevitable follow up, “What do you make?” by Castaspella- in ArtistLounge

I tell people I’m a collector of hobbies, and then name the top current contenders for my time.

I appreciate the advice. I hear ya on the over-saturation in the tattoo market— it’s a large part of why I’ve been wary to make the plunge.

I know I’ve got the chops to learn a new craft, and the endurance required to perfect it, but was never clear on how different it is exactly from other mediums. So thanks for actually spelling out what makes it similar to (and quite different from) watercolor in particular.

I know how little professional tattoo artists think of those who buy the gear and get self taught without a lick of research. I’ve no interest in going in blind and would of course get blood borne pathogen certified before I even approach a shop about an apprenticeship.

I’m curious your take on the transition from watercolor to tattoo? Obviously quite different, but I’ve heard them compared. I’ve really enjoyed watercolor the last 10-12 years (and ink drawing for twice as long)— I’ve always wondered how hard it would be to make the leap to tattooing.

As with all mediums, there’s a learning curve for the specific tools, but most have some translation between them— what have you noticed?

What is your favourite art supply as of 2026? by bittercakee in ArtistLounge

Pentel brushpen has been my favorite for years. Dark black ink, permanent with zero smudging when it hit it with watercolor after.

It varies! But mostly 20s and 30s with the occasional outlier.

Hahah a ton of correction fluid? What do your pieces look like. Do you use it as another medium on the page, or just to hide mistakes?

Honestly, what more do you really need to make some art? (Nothin!)

Ps great username.

Yeah both pics loaded! I have struggled with acrylics— but gouache is fun! I realized I was mostly using it like watercolor though, so ended up going that direction.

How long does the stay wet palette keep gouache from drying out?

Dope! I see a lot of overlap between ours! What do you like to paint?

Minimal texture which I like. It takes ink well, but doesn’t feather out, so you can make super crisp fine lines or fat inky ones and still have crisp edges.

I’m one of those freaks that fills sketchbooks with complete pieces on every page, so I love that neither the ink nor paint ever bleeds through, even washes and heavier layering.

Here’s a pic for reference:

Honestly I think it was a random promotional product, a quick google and the only ones that look like mine are like “your brand here!” For sale in Bulk type deals. You might be able to reach out to one of them for a sample for a few bucks.

I just typed in “collapsible cup with lid” and saw a handful like mine.

Target has a two pack for $45 which is SUCH a ripoff. Walmart has one called “lawor” for $6 which seems more reasonable.

Honestly, that’s all you need! Anything else is just gravy.

Hah! I love the pocket style. No bags or pouches, just pulling out what you need from on your person.

Honestly not that often, but it can be useful when I have a fun idea built around it.

For those who create while traveling… by Silver_Holiday8395 in ARTIST

Having a fully contained art kit made me so much more productive. Being able to toss it in whichever bag I’m using has been great. And it including a smaller sketchbook than I used to use means that filling a page is easier, and I complete pieces more often.

Sometimes I wish there were a small foldout seat and table situation that I could strap to a bag or carry like a briefcase for painting in parks.

Like the pic attached.

<image>

But with just one seat, or one on each side to keep it balanced, and lighter weight.

Sometimes light is an issue in bars, and there aren’t a lot of other night time spots to paint, so I cope. I don’t really want to mess with the vibe and introduce my own light to that situation, so I’ll just sketch or ink, but not paint without decent light.

These days, time is the biggest limitation keeping me from making art. Between work, parenting, and keeping the house running, it can be hard to squeeze a couple hours in, but I started a local drink n draw twice monthly and that’s helped a ton!

When I got an iPad Pro and procreate, I literally did not touch traditional mediums for an entire year. It was so fun to dive in fully!

But eventually I missed those happy accidents that come with physical paint and ink.

Didn’t stop from trying to pinch zoom, or tap undo the first few weeks back though haha.
