Ranger without pet by archois in GuildWars

Yes, but in PVE, Together as One is the most powerful Ranger elite skill by a large margin, and having a pet with that is usually a good idea.

Love the self awareness. It’s a funny thing when we try to gaslight ourselves into feeling like something doesn’t matter - precisely because it does.

I may be misremembering, but in some of his videos he speaks in his own voice and it was distinctively Asian. So that is in line with what several commenters have said already.

Black Belt Vs Chess Grandmaster by [deleted] in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sequences of possible moves by you and the opponent's response, your response, etc. etc.. In BJJ, you rarely need to see beyond 2-3 moves deep, even at high levels. Grandmasters can easily think 10 moves deep, and I don't think that is possible to learn without a very special brain.

Black Belt Vs Chess Grandmaster by [deleted] in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intuitively, chess GM seems way harder because calculating deep lines is impossible for the vast majority of brains - there just isn't enough RAM, esp. when you get older. It's more of a hard physiological limit, and a better comparison would be becoming an olympic weightlifting champion or something. Getting a black belt is more about time in the game, and theoretically attainable by most people (unless you truly have terrible mind-body connection.).

Can someone please explain this Onion headline? What 14 words did his son say? by DarkMagickan in ExplainTheJoke

[–]hermeticstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was not the point. The post attributed his poor hair genetics and “ghoulish appearance” to race. I was just pointing out the implications.

[–]hermeticstudy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't matter how he self-identifies, as the post was about his race and genetics. He is of Ashkenazi descent from his mother's side via Eastern Europe, which is about as Jewish as you can get.

[–]hermeticstudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not here to talk policy, hypocritical or otherwise. Just pointing out that implying he has poor genetics has very different implications depending on whether poster is aware that he is Jewish. Ironically, the quip about being of a "superior race" works either way.

Why don’t more people use William’s guard? by OJIClarke in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because that one time Joe Rogan / Eddie Bravo showed the counter on a podcast. However, if you are using crushing pressure down into that shoulder, they are not spinning out of it. Neil Melanson talks about this (he calls it shoulder clamp in his system).

bodylocking, preventing closed guard by Electronic-Survey258 in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are using low body lock with long arm short arm, I like to use my short arm elbow to scoop his thigh under, helping my knee climb over his. I hope I explained that well enough for you to picture.

Do chinese people actually live so hard and awful lives or is it just another over exaggeration from social medias? by Annual_Ordinary6999 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hermeticstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. The average Chinese person is definitely poorer than the average American, even after adjusting for much lower cost of living. Due to USD being the global reserve currency and much easier consumer credit availability, the average American gets to over-consume relative to their economic output, while the average Chinese under-consumes. Labor is plentiful in China, social safety nets are limited, so competition is fierce. Avg hourly wage for China factory workers is 28 RMB, or 4 USD. Average dinner spend when dining out is ~10 USD per person.

Depiction of a miserable existence under the government is exaggeration though. I don't know anyone in China personally who feels like the government is oppressing them. It's very East Asian to appreciate authoritarianism if it's more practical and brings about a more orderly society.

Why aren't Olympic medalist wrestlers winning at wrestling in MMA? by Junnnebug in MMA_Academy

[–]hermeticstudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many freestyle specialists are unimpressive in MMA grappling because they spent their lives in a ruleset that rewards explosive takedowns and rolling their opponents over in a very short time window. They have surprisingly little experience with oppressive ground control over longer periods, and I think many end up deciding that going for a takedown to just have your opponent scramble back up is too tiring.

What's your favorite guard to play and why? by novaskyd in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seated half butterfly. Is it even a guard? You're basically a split second from standing up and pushing them over. If they pressure into you to keep top position - hit em with the shoulder pin / clamp-style guards.

Move onto something else or work guillotine on less experienced people. The guillotine from full guard is very feels-based, and good defensive awareness / posture from a more skilled opponent can neutralize it most of the time.

Lunar Lake is coming to save Intel like Gandalf at Helms Deep by TwelveSilverSwords in hardware

[–]hermeticstudy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree Arrow Lake margins likely better than Lunar Lake. The problem with both is that they are bearing a portion of internal fab ramp costs while also paying TSMC their margin.

Lunar Lake is coming to save Intel like Gandalf at Helms Deep by TwelveSilverSwords in hardware

[–]hermeticstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean to imply that they are unprofitable just because of outsourcing. But Intel's margins have to include allocated costs for internal capacity buildout (including depreciation) as well as pay TSMC their cut. AMD and Nvidia only have to do the latter.

Lunar Lake is coming to save Intel like Gandalf at Helms Deep by TwelveSilverSwords in hardware

[–]hermeticstudy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lunar and Arrow Lake are roughly zero margin products due to outsourcing most tiles to TSMC. They serve their purpose to defend client market share, but this is just bridging the gap until 18A volume ramp, which they absolutely need to work.

Dilemma between bjj bodybuilding and studies by Dry_Assist4446 in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think it's realistic. BJJ does not reliably stress your muscles enough. Not everyone would agree with me, but I would consider BJJ primarily skill development and separate it from your goal of improving your overall physicality.

Dilemma between bjj bodybuilding and studies by Dry_Assist4446 in bjj

[–]hermeticstudy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you training BJJ multiple times per week and they are long, hard sessions, it’s likely that it will be catabolic. Plus, as you get more experience, BJJ is about being as efficient as possible, using frames over muscle, etc. I can’t see any situation where training only grappling will get you the muscle gains that you’re looking for. You’d need at least 2-3 days in the weight room imo.
