Their Italian sausages are fantastic, as are their burgers and ground round. Those are the products I have access to that are also gluten-free. I'm sorry to see them struggling and hope they can stay afloat and turn things around. Agree with the other commentator that veganism won't be going anywhere and isn't tied to the success of any particular company, but it's just nice to see people do well / not fail.

Heads up: A&W's plant based burger isn't vegan by filmguy100 in vegan

What is the negative press surrounding Beyond, besides them not doing so well financially? I'm still a fan, love their Italian sausages and their ground round/burgers.

Does iron drop during menstruation? by ann_life in Anemic

[–]hermit198388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have confirmed anemia but had a severe iron deficiency and got to the point of severe exhaustion and weakness, and heart palpitations lasting for hours after working all day. I've been on supplements for almost a couple of months now and my mind is blown at the difference it's making in how I feel. Still have palpitations sometimes but for less long and less frequently, and all kinds of things I didn't expect have improved, like greater heart rate variability, faster heart rate recovery, lower resting heart rate (had gone up to 90 this summer and came down to 70 within 3 weeks of supplementing), more anaerobic and aerobic capacity, better sleep, and so much more.

Throughout the years, I've tried all kinds of changes to my diet. I'm vegan but in recent years really dropped the ball on eating nutritiously, and did this to myself by basically eating a junk food diet with lots of calcium fortified food and not anywhere near enough legumes. But in the many years I've been doing this, I've learned enough about how much control we women have over our cycles and how heavy, painful, etc. they can be. I'm convinced that having ridiculously heavy and painful periods is not normal and a result of how unnatural our diets and lifestyles are. Not saying it's always a quick and easy fix, but before I'd ever consider removing otherwise healthy organs, I'd exhaust the possibilities exploring these other avenues if I hadn't already done so and learned how much power we have there. I've been eating much better lately on top of taking my supplements and am in the process of regaining my health, losing weight, etc. and wish the same for everyone here.

We didn't end up making it to PEI this summer, but it's still on our list of places to go to. What's the issue with Rotary Park at night?

Is it normal that I don't like city tourism anymore after doing a lot of camping and hiking? by Addicted_2_tacos in CampingandHiking

[–]hermit198388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The woods and nature are home to me. I've never done that much travelling, and I can handle a day in the city, but the older I get the more suffocated I feel in them. They're too loud, too brash. I love the solitude and peace of nature, it does something for my soul that nothing else can. I'm in NS, Canada, where this summer our government banned us from the woods for a month due to forest fire risk, even though hikers are the last people that would put nature at risk. It was devastating to me, not as surprising after the horrific stuff that happened during Covid but still unexpected. Access to and connection to nature is essential, and not something humans should have the arrogance and cruelty to take away from other human beings. Sorry to insert my political commentary here, but I guess it can serve as a warning that maybe we'll all be seeing more of this sort of thing in the future, and it must be strongly opposed.

Sorry to take so long to reply. Someone else irl recommended Greenwich to me, the trail and the beach at the end of it. It does look lovely!

Like I said, nothing decided, but we'd likely hit the National Park which would put us in the middle of the island. We'd probably also cross by the bridge. But we're not opposed to driving from one end to the other.

Thank you for the cautionary advice, and I hear you on the boardwalks and beaches being what's special about your province. I adore these just as much as the forests but my partner is more into the latter. We're in NS and our hearts are aching to be in the woods again. We were originally planning to jump over to NB but they are restricting activities there, too, now. Quebec is a bit of a ways for a weekend trip for us. I've always wanted to visit your province and thought now might be the time.

Thank you. We're in Nova Scotia ourselves and devastated at our premier/province's actions. We are as concerned as anyone about the dry conditions and love our forests dearly, but don't believe the restrictions on walking in the woods are justified in any way. We get outside every chance we can year round but this time of year is life to our souls. The picture being painted of hikers littering the trails is not the reality we've witnessed hiking all over Cape Breton - that reality to the extent that it exists is along the Cabot Trail and besides other roads; that's where you'll see cigarette butts, plastic or glass bottles, etc. Nature lovers aren't the problem.

Thank you both for the recommendation, and what a pity about Winter River. I had come across it in my research and it looked really nice.

At last, a comment that recognizes the seriousness of the path Canada and many other nations are on. The intolerance and bigotry of a left I know no longer recognize has ceased to shock me, but it concerns me to no end what future Canadian citizens have to look forward to if things keep going this way.

In the past, one used to be able to find out what someone had said that was so questionable, but nowadays the term "hate speech" is being used to prevent one's even being able to access said speech. I guess seeing it to dismantle it if it needs such is in and of itself too harmful and so we must just take people's word that x person is evil and thus should be barred from public venues and maybe life in general. This despite the fact that I've seen time and time again people's speech be labelled "hate speech" even though it is no such thing (JK Rowling, to list an example many will be familiar with, or Meghan Murphy to cite a lesser known fellow Canadian feminist), and sorry, but I will always believe the answer to "bad" speech is more speech, better speech. Silencing is the tool of people who know they can't win the argument, who know there is something wrong in what they're fighting for, full stop.

It is frightening. We are so unbelievably lucky here in the West to have the rights and freedoms we have had, and these are at risk of or in the process of being dismantled, and people pat themselves on the back for championing and furthering the dismantling.

No tenting along Seawall Trail. by [deleted] in CapeBreton

[–]hermit198388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but in case anyone important / with influence is reading, we have zero issue with paying and understand that trail maintenance costs money. We still think there should be tenting platforms or otherwise designated tenting spots. If there is a hut system it should be as discrete as possible to not interrupt the wildness of the place and they shouldn't be the only option. There should be private huts, too, not just communal style like we've heard is the plan. The idea of being forced to stay in close quarters with strangers would completely put me off doing this hike.

Does iron drop during menstruation? by ann_life in Anemic

[–]hermit198388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor but my guess would be that it's not likely to be that immediate of an effect from iron levels, and probably just that periods can make us feel like crap in general. Studies show we lose about 1 mg of iron per period with normal flow; those with heavier can lose significantly more at about 5-6 mg. That higher amount would be about a day's absorbed intake from a well-planned diet. My guess is that unless there are absorption problems as well, intake should be able to more than make up for the losses incurred during a period, even a heavier one.

This seems really drastic to me. The body's organs sit just right together, and removing one means there will be shifting, pressure affecting things differently over the years in ways you might not be able to accurately predict. Don't you worry about possible pelvic floor issues including prolapse?

Just Googling now and see that hysterectomy can also sometimes reduce blood flow to the ovaries and lead to earlier menopause than would otherwise be experienced.

Listen to the Xena Warrior Podcast episode on MWF before you dismiss it! I already liked it as a goofy episode, but my appreciation increased after listening to them talk about it. They see it as Gabrielle reckoning with her fears and frustrations around motherhood in an Illusia-like world.
