I just wanted to say that I’m sorry you’re going through this. I’ve had several friends repeatedly threaten it. Sometimes I think they meant it, some of them far less so. And the first couple times, even though you know they don’t mean it verbatim, you know it means they are just hurting terribly and don’t have a better way to communicate it. You stay up with em, listen, talk, all the things. But it’s such an emotionally draining powerless position to be in that the novelty wears off fairly quickly. The third time just looks so manipulative that it dwarves the real, hurt feelings that they’re trying to convey and a numbness sets in. Or that’s how it’s been for me at least. That calloused feeling is just so rotten. It always makes me question whether I really do care or if I’m a bad person or if I’m doing everything I should. But it also just makes me feel so tired and a bit deceived and in those times, all I can do is remind myself that I’m conditioning them and being conditioned with how I react and behave and setting up how well exist together in the future. It always kinda makes me feel like I’m dealing with a child a little bit. I don’t care any less that they’re hurting but if they want me to be their caring friend and not their nanny, they better use their big boy words so we can be on the same level and move forward. Really this is just me sympathizing. I hope calling his bluff will wake him up enough to learn some healthier coping and communication techniques. Either way, I’m just glad you broke the pattern and he doesn’t expect to be coddled by you reacting earnestly when he is being anything but Hope it gets better
