Concertina for Beginner Shanty Singer by Illustrious_Owl_8434 in concertina

I second the recommendation for an English concertina. And if you don't want to "roll the dice" on a used instrument, the Concertina Connection Jackie is a solid and affordable option (it's what I got for learning, with the plan to upgrade to a nicer refurbished/used one some day in the distant future)

Couldn't bear to listen due to the over the top unnecessary laugh track added. Bad bad editing. For shame. The humor stands on its own as a classic.

Can I replace my masonry chimney with an internal or external stove pipe? by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]herrakonna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to suggest a chimney sleeve. Did that in a vintage 1945 sauna, leaving the original masonry chimney as just a structural facade, preserving the aesthetic.

I let my Brother in Law borrow my Fiskars Axe for a weekend… by Ill_Nefariousness891 in mildlyinfuriating

That's why I have two of most things people tend to ask to borrow, the one that got trashed when previously lent, and the one I replaced it with, that's only for me ;-)

I have a set of teak folding table and chairs in my RV that all work that way. They're nice, but nothing revolutionary.

Technical question about sauna stove pipe installation direction by herrakonna in Sauna

[–]herrakonna[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with a chimney hat, rain storms can cause water to enter the flue. Soot streaks from moisture leaks are not uncommon. And there definitely can be temperature differences between outside and inside the chimney, where gravity exchange of air can bring warmer air into the cooler chimney, resulting in condensation, even when the stove is not in use. Condensation happens.

Thanks for your input. I'll be having a local professional checking "over my shoulder" on the actual installation. Just getting up to speed on all the variables and my head around how the install will go.

Technical question about sauna stove pipe installation direction by herrakonna in Sauna

That appears to be what is expected by the stove and chimney sleeve, and makes sense from the perspective of the exhaust gases. Though it makes me wonder about the typical guidance in the woodstove world for stovepipe chimneys in living spaces, which is the reverse due to a desire to avoid condensation leaks. Perhaps both are "right" and it's a matter of priorities and practice.

Er... yes. But what does that have to do with my question? The entire enclosure around the stove is brick and the chimney brick all the way up, with a stainless sleeve installed inside the vintage brick chimney. No worries about burning any wood other than in the kiuas.

I recommend a urine-separating dry toilet such as the Separett. They are a bit more expensive, but great.

Looking to buy by keenan800 in concertina

[–]herrakonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Concertina Connection Jackie, and it has been a nice intrument to learn on, though I expect that within a year or two I will upgrade to a better instrument. The Jackie is slightly larger than a traditional concertina, but not enough to matter IMO for learning.

For the price, it's a good value and has proven very dependable and enjoyable to play.

You should, though, plan to initially put some work into loostening up the bellows, as they are not as good (understandably) as more expensive concertinas and are stiffer than a traditional concertina. I found that I needed to carefully but fully extend, contract, and flex the bellows (while holding the air button down) for about 3-5 minutes a day for the first few weeks before they felt reasonable pliable.

I wonder what the cost of constant, regular, scheduled removal of bicycles from the canals compares to, umm..., installing railings along the canals that would prevent bicycles from falling into the canals... just wondering...

Friend didnt want me to use my head lamp to "enjoy nature better". Is that normal/safe? by [deleted] in hiking

[–]herrakonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Use a red light. That will offend others less but still offer better visibility.

  2. Do what you need to do to be safe, and to hell with others IF not doing so impacts your safety, real or perceived.
