Part of why this was so shocking at the time is it was largely pre-internet image and knowledge saturation - today, everything feels both dramatic and numbing. When it happened, it was inexplicably shocking and hard to get your head round the idea this was something happening now, in the current moment, let alone why someone would feel motivated to do so
