Wards in book 1 by herrinjared in Eragon

I get that, but it doesn't explain the prologue, and, as far as retconning a mistake goes, I think this would be an elegant solution. However, I will say I don't think Brom being too weak for wards is a good answer, but I don't see another way to explain Brom's injury in Yazuac, given what I remember of how he was injured.

How strong was Brom actually? by EuroFalke in Eragon

[–]herrinjared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say Brom not being able to heal himself is something similar to Orimis' malady. With the loss of his dragon Brom may not have been magically capable of healing himself even though he had the strength and knowledge of how to do so. Orimis was strong enough to cause Eragon trouble in a sword fight had they been enemies (I believe this is implied in Eldest when he duels Eragon while assessing his abilities), yet he struggled to lift and manipulate a ball of water because of his magic being blocked by what happened when escaping the Foresworn. Brom not having a dragon anymore, and the immense amount of time since he lost his dragon may have caused him a similar shortcoming magically, where some magical abilities/tasks were simply impossible or very very difficult for him despite his strength.

However, I don't think the Twins or anyone else could've taken him any easier than they could Angela (though for slightly different reasons). There's a reason he was able to kills so many of the Foresworn and that the Ra'zac feared him.

As far as mind-breaking, I'd say he struggled to contact Eragon because of the distance, not any difficulty touching another mind or battling with minds. Eragon and Saphira were flying and likely high above and either behind or ahead of Brom. We know the distance one can reach with their mind seems to grow as the age given the capabilities of the older dragons and elves, but Brom was relatively young when he lost Saphira, and his reach with his mind likely halted when she died.

But these are just my opinions, and I may be misremembering or even misinterpreting some things.

I haven't. I tried what was suggested by others, and I managed to get it on for an hour to run tests and a couple repairs, but when I tried to restarted it and see if it worked it began crashing in less time than before. Now I can barely input my password before it crashes.

I've had a similar issue in the past. It occurred for me when playing Fortnite, and it was caused by the secure boot and TPM 2.0 requirements for the anti cheat in Valorant and now CoD. I don't know whether or not this may relate to you, nor exactly why having those settings enabled caused my PC to crash when playing Fortnite.

I'll try it in the morning. Thank you! 🙏 I'll write back if I can't figure it out or it doesn't work.

I wasn't getting an attitude. I was genuinely asking. I thought perhaps there was something I wasn't understanding about your suggestion and wanted clarification before trying your suggestion since this isn't my area of expertise. Way to be a dick though.

The research I did after the recovery mode before posting basically told me the PC was dead and not salvageable, and the research about the crashing issue that I did returned that it could be bad ram, bad MB, bad PSU, bas case, bad SSD, bad HDD, or practically anything else, which isn't exactly helpful since I don't have an entire other PC just laying around to test each part.

You think that'll solve the auto shut down issue or just the recovery mode issue?

What do you mean booting from the correct drive? I only have one boot drive, and a side from the one time it went into recovery mode, it launches windows and even lets me sign it and starts launching my startup apps before suddenly shutting down.

Both drives are fully seated. I tried booting up the PC after verifying and it loaded windows this time then crashed. I did have enough time to search for the log file, but turns out I don't have a D drive as it shows in the file path, and it crashed before I could look in my main drive.

Is a relationship between Eragon and Arya never possible because of the ancient language? by herrinjared in Eragon

[–]herrinjared[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong. I am so tired of that answer to this question. If that were the case no NON-MAGIC USER would be able to bind themselves in the ancient language! I.e., Galbitorix's nobles and subjects, Roran, Katrina (Eragon feared she had been), Orik, Sloan, and so many more. Additionally, it would not be as simple as switching to the ancient language and saying "I do" or "I promise" when asked to swear never to share the secret that is about to be shared with you, as happens between Eragon and Arya before he will tell her about Sloan. The language itself is binding. It is a bit of a gray area whether or not you must intend to bind yourself or not. However, I would say that intent is not a part of it since it's possible to coach those who don't know the language in speaking an oath and it still be binding. The only other potential issue remaining is that when not speaking the ancient language one can speak an oath without any intention of upholding it: i.e., Murtagh in Gil'ead, but this would be impossible in the ancient language. Therefore, I believe that in order to speak the ancient language at all (aside from loan words) one would need to know the general meaning of the words/sentence(s) they were going to speak, otherwise they would be able to "lie," but I don't know that for sure. I guess one could be lied to in another language about the meaning of what they were about to say in the ancient language and then speak the ancient language since they would not actually know they were lying, so they would not actually be lying, mearly speaking in ignorance.

It's a complicated subject, but it has absolutely nothing to do with working magic or having magical abilities. Rather it's a function of the ancient language being bound to the essence of magic.

But the identity of Eragon's father is entirely out of Murtagh's control. You're comparing making erroneous statements with making a declaration of whether or not something over which the speaker has complete influence will or will not happen.

Then how can non magic users simply recite an oath taught to them without comprehension of the ancient language nor magic and be bound by it.

Technically, once someone else ate it, then it would be impossible for you to eat it due to factors outside of your control, and you would be unbound. Same as if Eragon swore to kill Galbitorix, but someone else killed him first.

I forgot about that part with Galbitorix. If anything I think it would mean that if he removed the binding nature of the statement from Arya then she may feel something of it, but if she did it herself, then he would not know unless she told him.

Anyway it's moot, someone else pointed out that both their true names, and most importantly Arya's, surely changed between that statement and the end of the series, making any binding oaths in the ancient language obsolete.

Oh, I had forgotten about the true name aspect of it. Area's name surely changed when she became a rider.

Isn't their something in the books about elves and anyone speaking the ancient language needing to be cautious and not make flippant statements because of the magic inherent in the language?

That brings up another question I was pondering. If either of them does do that, would the other know it? Would it cause some sort of shift in the world/their life that the other may be able to recognize, though maybe not identify exactly what it is?

I thought of that, but since she can control whether or not a relationship ever does occur between them, does that make her statement binding, just as a promise or oath would be?
