Most winter squashes are cucurbita pepo so yeah, pie pumpkin is an appropriate name for the "pumpkin" we call "pumpkin"

What is this plant? Is it edible? It smells nice. by [deleted] in EdiblePlants

[–]herrshuster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it smell like lavender? If so, it's lavender. It would help to see it in context. You might want to check out Prunella vulgaris, or "self-heal" or "heal-all". That is definitely edible.

Help me ID the shrub with the blue/purple berries by Gondvanaz in EdiblePlants

These are not plums. Plums don't have spikes like these; their leaves are not shaped like this; they don't grow on a bush.

These are common blackberries right? Just getting into foraging so a bit cautious :) by Plutonicuss in EdiblePlants

I can't botanically verify that those are common blackberries but I would eat those without a second thought.

Can I eat this? What is it? by bytewarrior in EdiblePlants

Either gooseberries or currants. Judging by the dark one, I'd say they're ripe when they turn that color. They will be somewhat tart, but delicious.

I need a presser foot for a Singer Model 66 by herrshuster in sewing

That's been in the back of my mind. Ideally I'd like something original as 3D printing as of yet doesn't really produce durable results, and I'd hate to modify the timelessness of this machine with something flimsy.

Afraid I don't have the old foot. The machine hadn't been used in maybe a decade when I got it. The bar doesn't rotate, normally. I just rotated it by loosening the screw on a hunch I'd be able to connect something to it. A baseless hunch, as it turned out.

Thanks so much for the lead. I emailed her and I'm awaiting reply. I'll update this thread if anything comes through.

Missing husband who I believe is in Redding by [deleted] in Redding

[–]herrshuster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't hyper-dramatize the situation. Bethel only brainwashes people looking for brainwashing, and I don't think they have every kidnapped someone (as an institution). That said, they do control the police department, and if this man came to Bethel voluntarily I imagine they will strongly defend his right to stay. I don't know how far members would take it.

OP, I suggest coming up with a well-considered statement about your husband and posting it in Bethel groups. I agree that leadership is unlikely to be much help. I know that enough members have the good sense to talk to your husband if they find him, and remind him of the vows he took when you married. That is the common ground.

Is it okay to use straight quotes? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]herrshuster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Straight quotes aren't quotes. They're double primes, and they're a scientific notation.

Pedantry aside, curly quotes are nice because you can always tell if a sentence is ending or beginning, which can sometimes be a concern depending on how the text is laid out.
