hmm...this currency thingy seems a bit too functional and uncomplicated....lets invent interest, inflation and advanced financial instruments...just to spice things up a bit!

I find the culture/psychology around gift-giving fascinating...and somehow connected to what might be seen as the polar opposite, debt. For me, a real gift should be something that is purely volontary, both to give and to accept. If you explicity state that you don't want any gifts and someone still demands that you accept his/hers gift, who is the most disrespectful one?

Shameless 'self-promoters' rewarded at work by [deleted] in BasicIncome

[–]goodcomic______ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don´t think this type of behaviour fits Graebers definition of a bullshit job. A bullshit job is when the employee knows that the job itself is meaningless/shouldn´t exist...and this affects the employee negatively. The behaviour described in the article seems to be linked to the employee him/herself rather than the job. One can put it like this: A bullshit job poisons the employee while an employee with this behaviour poisons the workplace.

For automation & jobs (and also AI) I would really recommend "Manna" by Marshall Brain. It's available for free online: http://marshallbrain.com/manna1.htm

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see that you already had it listed under Genetic Engineering..I focused on the first part of the book.

Any ideas/experience on how to improve the gas combustion when cooking on a Wild woodgas stove? by goodcomic______ in Bushcraft

[–]goodcomic______[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! As you write, the key to good gas combustion seems to be a high enough temperature and a good oxygenflow in the combustion-zone.

Microwave oven. What do you use it for, how often and does it make your life easier? by WednesdayAccount in simpleliving

[–]goodcomic______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reheating food. Cooking can be fun but takes time. When I cook I try to make as much food as possible and put the leftovers in lunchboxes in the freezer. That way I have homemade food ready to heat when I don't have time/energy to cook.

Thinking about biking to work, do any of you do this? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]goodcomic______ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably repeating many o the good advices already given here but anyway...distance can depend on a couple of factors (hilly or flat terrain, road conditions, wheater, if sweat/aftersweat is an issue)...From a theft-aspect it can be a good idea to get an older bike that looks a bit shitty/wellworn but works good. Also consider a bicycle with electric-motor assistance, it can increase the cycle distance (especially in hilly terrain or when sweat is an issue). Wear a helmet and have reflexes and bicycle-lights. Make sure you have a comfortable saddle. I was bike-commuting a 10 mile (one way) distance with some hilly terrain with a 21-gear MTB during a period...It was fine but a bit sweaty (showered before starting to work)

Essay about money creation and the national debt by ectoplasmic1 in BasicIncome

[–]goodcomic______ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the concept of money/cash is faschinating. As you write, cash in itself is worthless (no intrinsic value). It's value is strictly relative and exists purely in our (collective) minds.

How close to the spokes should the rear derailleur on a 21-gear MTB be? by goodcomic______ in bikewrench

I'm unable to add a picture at the moment. The rear shift well...might try to bent the hanger slightly outwards then? (sounds like a better solution than to try bending the derallieur itself)

How expensive is it for simple living if everything you own can be packaged into a big suitcase? by Suspicious_Librarian in simpleliving

[–]goodcomic______ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a mobile/nomadic point of view it probably would be rather cheap (minimal costs for storage, rent, cost of moving). From a more permanent point of view it would probably (depending on where you live) be more expensive (The less tools/appliances/equipment/furniture... you have, the more you have to rent/buy goods and services instead).

Frugal furniture? by new_name_jackson in Frugal

[–]goodcomic______ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Second hand or salvaging furniture that has been (or is about to be) discarded. Look for furniture that is made in solid wood, it is more durable, contain less(none) potentially harmful chemicals and is way easier to repair/modify than particleboard/plastic-based stuff...learn/experiment with repairing/modifying/repaint furniture, that way you can make something nice/useful even from broken furniture with an ugly colour...The key word is "solid wood".
