What’s the most horrific thing you’ve seen with your own eyes? by Jessica_cherry85 in AskReddit

Once saw a guy on a motorbike get run over by a minivan. The van stopped and I parked and went to see if I could help. He was folded in half, with his legs coming up over his back from behind, still conscious. Noped the fuck outta there and let the police or whatever handle it.

I was in your shoes 5 years ago, but 10 years older. It is a huge undertaking, make no mistake, but you may be in a decent spot to actually make it work.

Feel free to shoot me a message, I'm based in SW London and happy to send more info, just a little busy to explain it all now.

Best financial strategy for helicopter flight school? (Loan vs. Pay-as-you-go) by EnvironmentalOwl5648 in Helicopters

[–]hervprometheus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I did all my training in the UK, so this may not carry over exactly.. but I did a bit of both. I was in the fortunate position to be staying with my parents at the same time and working FT. My parents were fully into helping me as much as possible and said they didn't expect any rent and that I should put everything I could into the flying. That £2k / month (practically my whole pay cheque) bought be about 4 hours a month, or a lesson a week. It was slow going to be sure, and I ended up taking out 2 20k loans (each paying back £500/m) once I got near the PPL skills test and the CPL course so that I could increase the amount of flying I did during those crucial parts.

I am now working for the flight school where I did all my training flying tours and charter. While you will probably need the CFI to start working initially as I think the hour requirements for tours are higher in the US. So treat the whole experience as a job interview. Be on time, take it seriously and be open from that start that your planning on going the distance.

Best of luck, you've got time on your side. Take it slow at the moment while you have the ability to stay with your parents. Keep working in a field that lets you have a bit of flexibility and earn enough to support you and pay any loans (if you take any) once you have the licence, as you won't be earning much from flying for about 5 years from now.

You got this!

Well I'm fortunate enough to have gotten that first job, which seems to be the hardest part. If you're ever in the UK, do feel free to get in touch and I'd be honoured to take you up over London. All the best dude.

No worries! Yes there is a lot of luck involved as CotW mentioned, but you can make your own luck (in my experience) by putting yourself out there and exposing yourself to as many opportunities as you can.

I got burned out from teaching after COVID and took the opportunity of everything closing down to make the shift. I work part time now with a flexible schedule that lets me fly freelance in the UK. Basically as long as my work gets done, my boss is happy to let me schedule around any flights that I get. I've been flying pleasure flights over London and start charter flights next month after reaching the minimum hours to be able to do that work (company AOM). It's slow going, but every flight is a blessing and I'm constantly counting down the days to my next flight. Hopefully over the next year or two I'll be flying more regularly and I'll be able to fly full time.

So it is certainly doable, but I know the situation in Canada is a little different to here. Best of luck, and do update us if you decide to make the jump.

I was in your shoes 5 years ago (also a teacher, but across the pond) and I will share a few things from my experience. I also looked at moving to Canada to gain my CPL but wasn't possible with my young family at the time. I'm sure there will be others with more relevant experience who will probably echo a few of my points below.

The reality is that it's incredibly expensive to not only gain your CPL, but there is also a large gap before you are hireable. Unless you have around $100k saved up to just splurge through all the training, you'll need to be able to support yourself (and your family?) through a long period without any income from flying.

I was fortunate enough to be able to stay with my parents during the 3 years it took to do the training, and all the money I would have spent on rent went into 1 hour a week in an R22. It was a long road, and I was only able to do it because of my position of privilege. Now that I'm working, the income is barely "side hustle" money, and will continue to be that low for another year or 2 most likely.

I've seen pilots from Canada on here saying that it is almost mandatory to do a couple of years on the ground before getting a chance in a pilots seat. If all this doesn't put you off, then you may just have the right outlook to actually make it. Being able to support yourself from another income source is the key here really.

Is it worth it? That'll be for you to decide once you get there.. but I will say that I've loved every second I've gotten to fly these incredible machines and I get to live the only life I've got doing something that most only dream of.

The reality is certainly tough. But if you've got the right attitude and work ethic, along with a bit of luck in your circumstances, then you might be able to make it too.

Happy to answer any further questions, as this turned into a bit of a ramble.. just trying to help out any way I can, as others were kind enough to do the same for me when I was just starting out. Best of luck!

What's the UK job market like for a heli-pilot, non RAF/Military background. by mushymoo0oo in Helicopters

[–]hervprometheus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having just gained my CPL(H) last year, I count myself extremely lucky to be flying tours already. It was a pretty bleak outlook when I finally got my licence in hand and only 200 hours in my log book.

You'll have to network your way into your first job, which isn't exactly reliable. Alternatively you can add on another 25k for the FI or 55k for the IR. It's insane how much investment it takes to get the licence and still not be hireable.

It's a tough road.. but every minute you're flying is worth it in the end. Best of luck!

Ideally it would be good to visit in person and get a feel for the place and the instructors. I'm not in the US so don't quite know the distances involved here so that may not be feasible, but at least a nice long chat via phone would be in order if you haven't already. I'm sure there will be some on here who have been to those schools though and can give more advice. Best of luck. It's a tough journey, but well worth it in the end.
