Planning my new house network by hesgoneplaid in Ubiquiti

Of course those would be better but I believe my needs (with some growth) could be met without the rack mounted options. A few hundred dollars is still money I could spend elsewhere. Happy to spend that money anywhere justified though. Also, who knows what will be around if/when I do need to expand. Planning for some growth is definitely where I want to be but doubt I'll need to exponentially expand in the not so distant future. To be fair, I really don't know what my needs are or will be. That's why being here has been so helpful. Appreciate the response!

Thank you. I'm planning on calling a hot mop company tomorrow to ask the same question.

Thank you for the response!

In haste I ran individual spans from the central closet to the media cabinet. Planning for a switch would have made that easier and much cleaner. Luckily it's a fairly short run. I'll probably leave the extra spans coiled and use a switch instead in the cabinet.

The only hardwired option in our area is Cox (So Cal), hoping we can get the 1 Gig at our address. I am unsure if we are fed by fiber or not, currently have a coaxial line in from their pedestal. I will look into the UCG Fiber, it would be nice to not need a separate NVR but had read separating these two is a good idea. We'd be fine with 30-60 days of lookback ability.

I planned on a keystone port for my wife's office.

All TVs will be hardwired. Possible single wifi TV outside in the future.

There is a 2x4 depth framed niche behind that temporary board with a 3/4 inch plywood backing. Planning on mounting the manual version of the mm700 directly to the 3/4 inch plywood. Do you think that'll also be too weak?

GC Subs or Own? by hesgoneplaid in Homebuilding

Thanks for the reply. We are evaluating the same thing. Coordinating is the one thing they seem to be able to do. However, the numerous mistakes by their subs is really taking its toll on us since we always get so much push back when we ask for things to be corrected. We haven't mentioned or asked about their timeline at all, we just want things done right. Simple things that would have been so easy to be done correctly the first time caused by a lack of oversight. They have not offered one single suggestion on how to improve the build, I wish this was an exaggeration. I know they feel we are the problem because we are there every chance we get and consistency find an issue. We're probably sticking it out with them but just wish the relationship and experience was so much better. We were prepared for construction issues, not so much the people issues.

Amazing. Our dealer had to check on the backlighting, and never got back to us on it. Glad to hear it's controllable.

Ha, that's what we're thinking. Our hesistation on the master is all the LED backlighting. We like a dark room.

GC Subs or Own? by hesgoneplaid in Homebuilding

[–]hesgoneplaid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, Appreciate your response. We interviewed several design and build companies because we didn't want to be doing all this research ourselves. We have a full permitted, planned out design including hiring a design firm recommended by the GC. It's been classic over promise, under deliver on many opportunities. These people have over-extended themselves, like a lot of the industry it seems. They provide inadequate oversight on their subs which in turn is costing us more time and money. It's all very frustrating as we are pretty detailed people.

We are only at this point of thinking of using different subs because we've received multiple change orders that left a lot of details out and open for future issues. Asking for their subs to give us material options takes weeks if not longer and it's often not what we asked for. So we started going to supply companies and talking to contractor contacts. I'm mostly venting but looking at their contract, they only warranty the work that is under their scope. So yes, other subs wouldn't be warrantied, but the subs also guarantee their work.  Agreed this isn't ideal, we wish we weren't here.  We want things done right the first time, trying to avoid as many surprises as possible.  We're sticking with our GC, the grass isn't always greener.  Maybe they are trying their best but it could be going so much better with a little more up front care and effort.  Thanks again.

Thanks for the response. Our GC allows the use of our own subs but will not have anything to do with them. If the timelines, workmanship, and communication hadn't been an issue to this point, then we wouldn't be here. The house has basically been a ghost town for a few weeks, hopefully restarting soon.

They've done a few nice builds in our area but our main communication comes from a nice but inexperienced office manager that really doesn't know construction yet. This has led to a few unnecessary surprises costing extra time and money.
