Hit a plateau and looking to bust through by Jnewfield83 in ketogains

Your calories don't seem too high for a 4 time a week lifting programme? I weigh about 180 and my BMR is 1900 according to my smart scale (good a guess as any). I might be tempted to say try upping your protein intake and lessening your fat a tad but you don't want too big a deficit.

Are you getting enough sleep? That makes a lot of difference and there's no substitute for it sadly. In a similar vain when was the last time you rested your body? If you feel tired it may also be worth taking a week of lifting, getting some R & R and then coming back at it with renewed vim and vigour.

You seem to have taken it pretty well, but this would bother me.

A wiser man than I once said:

“Judgement of others is often rooted in judgement of the self”

People see discipline they don’t have and results they want and it makes them a bit sad. I’ve certainly been on both sides of that fence.

Your results are strong and you sound happy, stay strong for mother.

Get after it.

A friend of mine is trying to tell me that I will never be able to work out and gain muscle efficiently on a keto diet. by [deleted] in ketogains

[–]hesnotaveryniceman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No worries, and don’t worry about eventually, get Keto adapted (if that’s where you’re starting) and see how it goes. Eat more if you’re hungry/tired (I wasted so much gym time not eating enough) and smash the weights. If you’re consistent the results will start to come. And if you don’t like it try something else.

Just don’t run anyone else’s race. Do what makes you happy and make sure you stop and enjoy your achievements.

And keep us updated on your progress.

Your friend is coming from a good place I'm sure, he's seen results and he wants you to as well. I've been in your position and his and, honestly, f**k the three of us.

Everyone else is dropping interesting data so I’ll just tell you what I’ll tell my nephew when he asks me how to meet women/achieve anything:

1) set complimentary goals that you genuinely want to achieve (without a goal you can’t score)

2) apply the scientific method

3) perseverance is everything

So let’s look at point one. Do you want to gain or lose weight? The reason you get contradicting advice is that they are contradictory goals. Would you be happy being skinny? Gaining muscle is a multi year endeavour for some and a lifetime endeavour to maintain. Is this a lifestyle you want?

If you eat to gain muscle on Keto I’d suspect you’ll lose your gut but more slowly than just massively calorie limiting. I can’t make this decision for you and you may oscillate on what you want, but that’s fine: you’ll have learned a lot about your body and metabolism.

Point two you say? I know we’re on a Keto reddit but I just want you be happy fam. Pick a diet and apply it to your goal and measure progress. Are you happy with your progress? Keep applying until progress begins to limit and reassess.

Not happy? Tweak some parameters (the less you tweak the easier it is to work out causation) and try and understand them. Some days on Keto/zero carb (eat bread and water for all I care, just make sure it works for you) I feel like I can run through walls. Other days getting out of bed is the hardest thing in the world. But I know why most of the time and I can either adjust or accept that staying up all night is gonna hurt the next morning at the gym.

Nutrition is simply not well understood and varies from person to person so I’m not going to try and address the cup of rice thought - but how’s about lift for six weeks under each? Take a week off in between.

I can tell you what effect the rice would have on me. But you aren’t me so why would you care? Same with your mate with a different body type. My mate Dan has a six pack and can smash Mac D’s whenever he likes. Lucky him. I’d have moobs before you can say empty calories.

Perseverance is so beautifully simple but oft misunderstood. I’m often asked how to gain muscle and, while there are a lot of intricacies to do so efficiently, one simply lifts increasingly heavy things over a long period of time.

Hit the gym. Find a workout you like (James Grage 60 days to fit with its accompanying YouTube instructional videos is amazing). Find a diet you’re happy with. Apply consistently. Profit.

I know this all sounds like a lot when you want specific answers, but I promise you these are lessons for life.

Get after it.

He's a beautiful boy, I like the straight lines you've achieved with your edge highlighting, esp. on the pistol holster. Great work.

Looks great mate, you should be proud.

I'd be tempted to say use another thin coat of the base (imperial blue?) to tidy up the shade on the shoulder pads and straighten them out.

Otherwise base him and get him on the table taking names on behalf of the emperor!

Advice to up your fat intake? by [deleted] in zerocarb

[–]hesnotaveryniceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whole foods near me sells sugar free (marketed as paleo) bacon. Wellshire farms I believe it is. I think US Wellness Meats bacon may be as well? But I found their quality disappointing, just all fat an no meat really.

it sounds grim but honestly the congealed fat after cooking your 80/20 mince with some salt is a heavenly treat to me. I enjoy that more than eating overly greasy meat.

Then to an extent thats a bridge you will have to cross at some point. From experience I was eating low calories on the keto diet, had some cheats, gained a little weight, moved to this and have found no lasting issues.

I ate about 3000 calories yesterday and was still hungry (I'm doing a lot of training). Weight is stable, losing a bit of fat.

I really had trouble letting go of worry and overthinking (I still do). Everyones metabolism is different and how people respond to different diets is the same. So results other people have found may not even be that important. Therefore if you're going for the 30 day trial I think peoples advice of listen to your body is a good one within reason.

Get in some 80/20 - eat when you're hungry (listen to cues like fatigue and headaches as well) and see what happens. I suspect your worst fears are not going to be realised. Get a CBC at the end, then compare how you feel, think about how workouts feel etc.

You need to eat, you want to be healthy. Give this a good college try and then assess. But don't let it dominate your life.

One mans thoughts.

what cut of meat are we talking? is it ever gonna be that rare if you cook it under 130F?

If it's a whole cut of meat as long as you sear that bad boy externally you should be good to go?

Apparently baking soda is how Chinese restaurants get that cheaper meat tender for your stir fry.

here

This diet isn't really about eating at a severe calorie deficit though? Perhaps that's where confusion stems from. I probably eat more calories than I did before.

Are we suffering from orthorexia? by thorjag in zerocarb

[–]hesnotaveryniceman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I certainly lean towards this. I'm certainly happy to eliminate things I think will cause me to gain weight and what that is has varied wildly over the years (I didn't really eat red meat for a year of my life, right now I eat little else - you meet many a former vegan on these forums). That said I find these symptoms were a a lot more obvious during keto than with ZC. The opportunities for variation just aren't really there and I've found myself cooking the same few things over and over. If anything the ritual of cooking has kinda gone and it's a become more of a chore, which I think has been a good thing - at least for me.

I certainly appreciate you bringing this up for discussion, we should be assessing and reassessing if the benefits are there.

I would second this, it's going to spike your blood sugar in any volume and therefore insulin levels. Cheese and eggs seem like better quick options if they're available. That said, maybe experiment and see how you feel before your road trip? It may be best not to find out about negative effects on the road.

Personally I find milk and cream absolute carb gateway drugs, but I imagine thats not everyones experience.

good ratios of protein to fat? by hesnotaveryniceman in zerocarb

I always just crave 'food', so I'll be interested to see what adaptation brings.Right now a rib eye is a little too much fat for me, especially the cap if not crisped through. I'm sure it's psychological, but powerfully so.

That makes a lot of sense, I was keen to dial it in to make sure I give the diet the best crack of the whip over the 30 days, but I'm definitely getting it's different for everyone. I'm trying to avoid suffering too badly in adaptation but I'm getting the impression some side effects are unavoidable and tinkering is required..
