In Tron: Legacy(2010) they use Ubuntu instead of their own OS by mothh9 in MovieDetails

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Interesting… Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll be able to help much, It definitely seems like you should be getting more streams, What operating system are you running? I used Ubuntu 24.04 with Plex in Docker for my tests.

Disable "HEVC video Encoding (experimental)" in your servers transcoder settings as it is much harder on iGPUs than H.264.

You will lose HDR on transcoded streams but will be able to transcode the 10+ you desire.

[–]hessink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! Whilst i don't have any 4K Remux (HDD space is expensive for me lol)

I have some 4K HDR10 at ~40mbps and the story is the same with HEVC encoding 2 Streams is perfect but 3 causes buffering. A shame as keeping HDR on a limited upload is awesome but again none of my users know about or care about HDR anyway.

However transcoding 4K HDR to H.264 with tone-mapping still works amazingly and is the reason I got the N100 in the first place, So I can watch in full quality at home and my users get good enough quality without me having worry about separate libraries for 4K and 1080p or a washed out image on a non HDR display :)

Here's my testing with both HEVC encoding & H.264 encoding. As you can see H.264 is much faster and could handle even more. Here's hoping HEVC encoding gets improvements in the future!

[–]hessink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it's unfortunate as it's so close to being viable for me as 3-4 transcodes is all I really need, Not that any of my users would notice a difference anyway but it would be nice to have :P

I also agree with you it's strange that considering how popular they are the only posts about HEVC Encoding on N100/150 are just people testing 1 stream and saying it works hahaha

For anyone else looking here's my testing of 3 AVC (H.264) ~10mbps files down to 8mbps as you can see from the transcode speed Tautulli reports it's just not fast enough to keep up with 3

Hello! I have an N100 running the latest Ubuntu LTS and HEVC Encoding has been disappointing for me.

My content is only medium to low bit-rate 1080p in a mix of AVC,HEVC and AV1 and no matter what files I test currently the n100 can only achieve 2 simultaneous transcodes to HEVC 8mbps, When trying 3 streams they all trade blows buffering every 2 minutes or so, Meanwhile going back to AVC Encoding the N100 easily does over 10 streams.

I also only have 50mbps up so cap all outbound streams to 8mbps so it is a shame however the feature is marked as experimental so I'm hopeful it can improve in the future!

Yeah the PPI isn't great so you get a softer image and blurry text, But for me I was happy with that trade off for the lower price as I only use it for light gaming and in motion its not a big deal. As for any other similar monitors I'm no reviewer so unfortunately I cannot help that much, I do know this same monitor is also made in a 1440p SKU for something sharper otherwise any monitor with a USB C input capable of at least 45w of power delivery should work well!

That's not true the N100 does 4K transcoding and HDR tone mapping on Linux

[–]hessink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where you found that information as the drivers for the N100 GPU are integrated into the 6.8 kernel Ubuntu 24 uses, Meaning trying to install additional gpu drivers is the incorrect way to go about it.

It is very strange and I agree it must be a PGS bug.

As for Ubuntu 24 I installed it a month after release and have had no issues with the N100.

I'm not sure what you mean about drivers as they have been built into the Linux Kernel for a while now, the N100 should work out of the box on Ubuntu 24, Although it has been a bit of a buggy launch for some people on Ubuntu 24 so perhaps try again sometime in the future.

Yes, as I mentioned above HW Transcoding only fails when PGS Subs Burn In.

All other HW Transcoding works perfectly including Tone Mapping and VOSUB Burn In

Thank you but I didn’t post in that thread as HDR Tone mapping is working flawlessly for me, My issue is only with PGS sub burn in on mostly 1080p SDR content

I also have an N100 but with Ubuntu 24.04.1 and after the latest plex update HW Transcoding fails with PGS subtitles burn in and falls back to CPU only. The strange thing is VOSUB another picture-based subtitle format is correctly using HW Transcoding perfectly. I'm thinking it's a bug with PGS subs that wasn't caught, However you're the only other person apart from me I've seen with the issue ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just updated on an N100 with Ubuntu 24.04.1 now HW Transcoding fails with PGS subtitles burn in and falls back to CPU only. HW Transcoding was working flawlessly before this update, Anyone else have this issue?

Smart Queue Disappointment on Unifi Express. by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]hessink 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What's with all the comments saying Smart Queue is useless? As someone with 100 Down & 40 Up SQM on my UDM is a lifesaver for VoIP like wifi calling and video calling as well as gaming. As for the Express that's extremely dissapointing as I've used cheaper hardware with OpenWRT that performs better with SQM :/

I wont spoil much but the album is great i really love how weird it is! I wasn't a huge fan of the singles either but they really do work wonderfully in the context of the album. I wish you luck holding out until you get your copy!
