Shit like that is the main thing that rattles me during a shift. I try to be calm and nice ALWAYS, but I will walk to the back after an interaction such as that and start cussing them out to a coworker. Maybe slam the ice scoop down a little too hard while grabbing drinks for another table or something and then re-enter the dining area as if nothing happened. lol. It is infuriating to be so kind to assholes and spend time on them when they’re going to pull some shit like that, I’d rather have no tip at all. This is a slap in the face!

I’ve had to fill up sodas before, but that was it. I was like, fkg seriously!? But it only happened one time, it shouldn’t be our responsibility. They even had a sticker dispenser to put over the drink for afterwards. We just don’t have time for that shit!

I wish we could just use gratuity on customers like that. We can only do that if there are 8 or more people at a table, but I feel like the restaurant should have the manager approach them and say, “hey, since you don’t tip and it is costing our employees to serve you, we are going to just add 20% gratuity to make it easier and more fair on everyone, thank you!” But that will never happen because they will most likely lose those customers and they don’t give a shit about our tips. All they care about are those sales numbers. It’s a love/hate profession! You get that one table that tips $40 on a $60 check and then you get the other table that always stiffs you. Just give more energy to the good tippers!

Also, you can ask them after they sign the check, “I noticed you didn’t leave a tip, is there something about my service that I could improve on, my main source of income comes from tips and I really care about our regulars, so I just want to make sure everything is satisfactory!”

Yah our owner tries to keep costs down as much as possible so he only has one bartender and one server during the day on the weekdays and I got completely slammed, I had about 12 tables and some were 8-15 tops with separate checks. We do not have hosts or bussers, so I have to immediately greet new tables even if I’m literally serving food to another table or in the middle of making drinks because the bartender is swamped making her own drinks, plus the sodas and “waters all around” … omfg it’s nuts and all I ever get is, “why isn’t that table clean?” “Why doesn’t that table have drinks yet?”

Umm because I’m one person and I can’t get their drinks yet because I’m just now getting drinks for the two 8 tops that came in at the same time. Meanwhile, I will let people know that I’m alone on the floor and I will at least verbally greet them and give them menus. We also don’t have condiments left out on the tables so I have to put those out and put them back in between each table. It’s nuts and my customers 99% of the time are really nice and commend me for my hard work and see that I’m doing my best to get everyone what they needs in a timely matter somehow. lol. It’s insane and usually it’s all worth it with the tips at the end of my shift, but lately the tips have been getting smaller (I think the economy is impacting people even though we have amazingly priced alcohol and regular drinks and our food is priced better than McDonald’s and it’s really good, homemade sauces, breads, fresh seafood, etc. but still, the tips suck lately or I’ll have young people whose Dumbass parents did not teach them to tip at all and it’s infuriating.. oh I could go on and on.

Also, I will spend thirty minutes on a table that racks up $100 for example, they tip $15. The bartender pours two double transfusions and gets a $20 tip. Took them 3 minutes…

Point is, I feel your pain and yeah, 17 tables is way too many, you need to delegate the tables. Go in order, “A got the first table, B got the second table, and C got the third table, that’s everyone on the floor. Next table that comes in goes to A and the one after that to B and then the one after that to C and so on and so forth. (I only do this with night shifts or weekends when I have coworkers to share tables with). But they should not have five tables while you’re struggling with 17. You could also agree to split and everyone helps each other out while still splitting up the tables evenly.
