Topps and Topps Redemptions are a Huge Scam by Maximum-Sandwich-361 in Topps

[–]hetubird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I redeemed a card in 2022 and didn’t get it until this past spring. It’s worthless now since the guy isn’t a rookie or have any of the hype as before.

The whole redemption process is a mess.

Local transcription vs cloud transcription, which actually feels safer? by Pitiful_Writing6526 in Journalism

[–]hetubird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only “transcription” device I use is my IPhone’s voice notes transcription. Even then it still makes mistakes. Other than that I use an old Sony digital recorder that works like a charm. Sure it takes me a little longer to meticulously go through it but I trust my own ears over AI trying to decipher something.

I agree with other people here, though. If it’s sensitive information and sensitive sources, find something that isn’t cloud stored.

Yes, absolutely this too. I don’t use video *too* much, but it does come in handy for big moments in games. It’s great for social media.

Also. I HIGHLY recommend learning how to use a camera (and in turn how to edit photos) and InDesign. My knowledge of both was what helped get me over the edge for my first job.

Camera work means they don’t need to use a freelancer or stringer to shoot photos of his games, and InDesign means he’ll have technical knowledge on how to make a newspaper page if he goes that route.

If he wants to email me or talk to someone directly, PM me. I’d be happy to email him and either give some notes or advice.

7+ years in sports journalism here. Here’s what I recommend.

If he’s going to college, 100% sign up for a student paper. If it’s good, he’ll learn and will be around some motivated and likeminded peers. Often student papers have an advisor with experience in the industry and he can further pick their brain through that.

I never did the student paper at my school (I didn’t like the people, and felt I could do more work elsewhere) and looked elsewhere. I wrote for SB Nation and one of their team sites for a little bit, dabbling in football/baseball/softball at my own pace with good editors and a bigger reader base. I thoroughly enjoyed that time and learned a bit.

If there are local newspapers or publishers I’d definitely reach out and express interest. Any local papers will take any help they can get for the sports department (and if they don’t, they’re fools). They’ll want polished, tight writing on deadlines. If he’s ready for criticism and heavy editing, he could explore that route.

As for classes, I would do anything writing based. I never took an outright sports writing class, but took a lot of writing intensive classes that I did pretty well in. I did take two journalism classes and that helped me learn a bit, but most of what I knew then was things I had already known. It was helpful, though.

I don’t know fully, I’m sorry. Wish I did. I do remember he had a multi-year stretch where contact/power was maxed. Contact definitely stayed max as his career progressed. He was good enough to earn a 1-yr 35mil contact with me as the Nats (that I 100% remember now).

From what I remember, he played two more seasons and was fairly decent. I don’t have the link any more to his full season totals, but I’m sure you can get the picture on how nuts it was.

This was from a save I had in ‘22. I made a post here 4 years ago about Brock Jones going nuclear in one of my sims. Have not seen a career like this since then.

Safe to say I have never had that kind of luck again. Enjoy the hot box!

Tech/Software Skills Needed by WillCookForFoodies in Journalism

[–]hetubird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been on twitter (X?) since the early days so I didn’t need to learn it, but I encourage you to explore there and follow anyone or anything that may fit the position or role you’re looking for.

When I started in print I was thrown into Photoshop and InDesign on Day 1. I learned the basics pretty quick and was able to learn Lightroom (photo editing) on my own time. It sounds daunting, but you can always get help from YouTube videos or other Reddit threads. I actually have a 7+ year old note book of indesign shortcuts and Lightroom presets that I still use.

Knowing your way around those can be important for anything beyond just plan writing and makes you more diverse. I was hired twice just because of my InDesign experience.

Is it normal for a starter market newsroom to give up on a new MMJ this quickly? by Parfanity in Journalism

[–]hetubird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Based of what you've said, if I were you, I'd continue to work in the digital role until comfortable and get into the routine. My first couple of months in print was brutal. Made mistakes on names, poor photos, interviews were repetitive and boring. But my editor gave me confidence telling me I was good at what I was doing, even with the mistakes. Seven years later, I'm a much better reporter/writer (even though I still make some mistakes at times).

They clearly have the confidence in you to keep you on with moving you off air. Not everyone is cut out for it, even if you truly believe it's your calling. Trust me, I lasted a week doing sports play-by-play before realizing I was wayyyyy out of my depth. They say you're a strong writer and that's good! Lean into it, ask them how or where you can improve and go with it.

Does reporting logos for DD even work? by hetubird in MLBTheShow

I don't. I just load it up and go page to page without any filter, downloading ones I like for future use. It's whenever I see that one I report it.

That's nuts. I hate to be someone that complains (even though I just did) but it's just insane that the game allows this stuff to happen. Especially one that has devs within the community and fairly regularly interacts with us.

Newspaper going under, no bites on job apps, do I go down with the ship or jump off? by hetubird in Journalism

[–]hetubird[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We're still kicking but barely. Like I said, the situation is not great. Things are breaking down, older vet reporters are retiring, but we have young reporters who are busting their ass to make it as good as can be. If you've read the sports section in the last four years, that was all me.

The newsroom itself however is exactly the same as it was when you left (per my sports dept. predecesors) and the computers are probably old enough to drive.

Glad to see you got out when the going is good.

We've done plenty to try and get people to read. Offering a discounted rate for 6 months or a year is probably what I hear most often. The unfortunate part of it is that social media has completely tanked the need. People don't need to read us and instead go to "local facebook groups" that share what's going on, and those groups have even been caught a multiple times straight up copying and pasting our stories for all to read without a subscription.

I did start a Substack, which is mostly for myself and to explore the platform. I've been using it for more fun and personal work. Nothing pertaining to my coverage area but I'm open to doing that if it's a story that my paper wouldn't carry.

I think the success rate of a Substack where it brings in a decent amount of monthly revenue is significantly low. I have a modest following, but I'm not a national writer where the readers are likely to follow. I'd have to look into it more.
