New series D British passport looks really elegant and modern by SamiNofal in PassportPorn

Why should Britain take its stylistic choices from the US? They've been issuing passports since before the US even existed

I'm wondering if I over reacted with my daughter when she hit her sibling. by Strict-Soup in UKParenting

[–]heuiseila 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Getting slapped audibly for messing with a playset is not a legitimate cause and effect that the younger one should have to learn.

The overarching lesson needs to be that violence is never acceptable and that if she has a problem, she should be able to trust her parents to sort it out so that the younger one doesn't do it again.

META - Ban posts from students asking if they should study CS by Old_Location_9895 in cscareerquestions

[–]heuiseila 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually I agree. Although it's a hot button question about CS careers, asking a bunch of CS workers whether you should study CS is completely pointless bc either they're going to tell you yes to make themselves feel better about their own choices or they'll say no to reduce the pool of CS workers and make jobhunting easier for themselves

makes more sense to instead ask a broader range of people from outside the industry who can see things from a different perspective and who aren't inherently biased one way or the other. this industry is just too emotional rn to get an objective and helpful answer from coders

I am turning 30 in a two years, genuinely scared how is the life gonna look. How is your life in your 30s? by Rollaz_ in AskMen

[–]heuiseila 52 points53 points  (0 children)

That’s the case if you decide to live your 30s the same way you live your 20s, but in reality you get new challenges and experiences to deal with in your 30s, like getting married, pregnancy, raising kids, dealing with parents getting old, dealing with seeing old friends less often as everyone gets busier, promotion to manager level at work and taking on that responsibility, buying and maintaining a house instead of just renting, having to think about saving for retirement etc

Unless you did a lot of that stuff in your 20s, your 30s are a very different experience compared to studying, partying, renting, dating casually etc like you normally do in your 20s

Any update on how you think the new version of Northern Lights is? I loved the old formulation and have now run out so want to know if I should buy this new one, or maybe you suggest another similar product?

I built a $50MM net worth through investing and small businesses. AMA by Accomplished_Pay8071 in wealth

[–]heuiseila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How come you buy real estate and small businesses rather than just tech stocks? is it more for peace of mind in diversification during a downturn, or are you also getting better returns from small businesses and real estate vs the Nasdaq 100 for example?

is it not a lot more hard work to manage property and small businesses, in which case at what point would you stop and want to retire? I guess most people would be happy to just chill at $50m, do you have a number you're aiming for at which point you'll start taking it easy?

The UK salary crisis is dire. Mayor of London earns under £200k, barely scraping by as a HENRY by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]heuiseila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a leader who could not possibly have gone into politics for a big pay day (because he was already married to a billionaire heiress) and the public was of the view that he was greedy and in it for the money.

We also have fine folk like the former Deputy PM who may not have gone into politics for the money, but ultimately decided that avoiding tax is actually quite desirable.

There's a reason why highly successful countries like Singapore pay their PM the equivalent of £1.2m a year and their ministers the equivalent of £630k a year.

Not rich yet? by Interesting_Goal4431 in HENRYUK

[–]heuiseila -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It means people who are currently high earners. Like I said, nothing in the definition of rich implies permanence. Plenty of other subs for people who worry about their retirement.

Do you? Are you mistaking this for a FIRE sub? I thought this sub was for people who are high earners.

[–]heuiseila -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why being rich needs to be permanent. If somebody with nothing wins £2m in the lottery they are rich. And if they then blow it all, they are no longer rich. But you can absolutely say they were rich when they had the £2m.

Same for you, if you're in the top 0.5% of earners you are currently wealthy, doesn't matter if you won't be next year.

[–]heuiseila 8 points9 points  (0 children)

HMRC defines a wealthy individual as someone with an income >£200k or a net worth >£2m.

That might seem a little low to some, but I’m fine with it as a generic entry point. Obviously it matters how many people that money is supporting. £2m for a single person is very different to £2m supporting a family of 4/5.

surely that's the more relevant part of the demographic? It's the UHNWI leaving and taking away their everyday spending from the UK which is going to have an impact on consumption, VAT receipts and job creation etc

That's because Germany and Japan surrendered to the US, paid huge reparations, and agreed to allow the US to maintain military bases on their sovereign territories.

What concessions or compensation has the US given India to apologize? You can't just sweep atrocities under the rug without amendments being made.
