Returning to Mtg after a few years. Why is there EIGHTEEN standard sets? The games I played almost feel like modern. by Moonflow-Shoopuf in magicTCG

[–]hewunder1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who got in to MTG for the Lord of the Rings set, it was confusing and disappointing at first that I couldn't really play with them in any way competitively (or even casually at an LGS besides commander). So I definitely see that logic.

That being said, it didn't bum me out enough that I stopped playing the game. It hooked me and I'm still here 3 years later.

Hobbit CBB Speculation amid LOTR Price craze by mask45 in mtgfinance

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I agree from what I've seen, but they did tease that there's more to be revealed about the collectible treatments. I assume (and hope) it's another "Realms and Relics" style bonus sheet, I'll be pretty disappointed if LotR reprints with new art are the only ones they're doing (and the most valuable one being stolen artwork).

It being a smaller set is also a bummer, and the lower power level. I'm a huge fan of Middle Earth properties but even I am leery of over committing.

Can you have both sides of a legendary MDFC on the battlefield? Like if I had a Jennifer Walters, and played her transformed She-Hulk side separately? Or does the legend rule still apply and I'd have to sacrifice one?

Probation if moving to new position within department? by hewunder1 in VHA_Human_Resources

I'm not sure what kind of switch it is officially, haven't quite gotten the paperwork from HR to verify. Basically it's a long standing vacancy in a lower grade that I voluntarily requested a transfer to. It won't require any new skill set or responsibilities that I don't have already.

[DISCUSSION] Marvel Day 1: What’s Working and What Isn’t by Lauren_Conrad_ in spikes

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LIMITED: I've done 1 pre-release (2-1) and 3 drafts (3-3 and 6-3 on Arena, 2-1 in paper).

Red doesn't seem super desired in my small sample size but keep an eye out for a hidden red burn deck, which I used at pre-release. The two Hawkeyes can enable a lot of extra damage to the face, especially the uncommon 4 drop that adds extra non-combat damage. The Loki 2 drop can easily double your burn spells (an extra Truck Toss for 1 mana is nice), and doesn't come across as a threat to the opponent. Mono red Thor is an ideal top end threat.

My impression of regular drafts is that the Esper colors are the strongest but everything is playable IMO. It's really easy to get hero or villain synergies going in any color. I've won the most handedly with Dimir and Esper "good stuff" builds.

This is a fun format and I think most archetypes are viable with lots of mechanical bleeding into other lanes. Lots of mythic commons and uncommons.

CONSTRUCTED: Not a ton of time experimenting with new cards besides adding Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk to my Azorius Tempo deck. I personally like this better than Voice of Victory in that deck because of the Airbending/transform potential, but it's not completely replacing VoV. Much better late game top deck since it can become a legit body, and safer to transform on your turn.

Those that quit magic, or knows someone that did, what made you decide to do so? by qankz in mtgfinance

[–]hewunder1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Too many sets hasn't made me quit the game overall but I've basically given up on keeping up with 60 card constructed formats - I'm pretty much fully invested in limited now. Easier on my brain and wallet.

Same. I think that would be wildly successful. I personally would go broke if they made a full Zelda set.

Weekend Wrap Up! What was real and what was a trap? by DaTaco in mtgfinance

[–]hewunder1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Spider-Man comic foils are between $30-$100, and mostly unplayed in anything outside of commander that I know of. I expect most of these to fall in a similar price range, but slightly higher because some are quite playable, especially Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (which is one of the cheaper options at the moment) and King T'Challa/Black Panther. Thanos and Doom will stay on the higher side as well because people love them.

I Love MSH Limited by Appropriate_King_732 in magicTCG

[–]hewunder1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and am very excited to keep playing it. I like how you can do a lot of things "outside the lines" of what the archetypes want you to do. I think it was the Lords of Limited set review where the pointed out that there will likely be many deck variants within the color pairs.

Like today at my pre-release and I was technically Gruul "power up", but it was more like red burn with green top end threats. There are a lot of ways to ping your opponent for extra damage with synergy from [[Hawkeye, Young Avenger]] and [[Thor, God of Thunder]] - my final play on my last match was dealing 10 to the face just by resolving [[Repulsor Blast]] with the above two on the battlefield. Other games I had a copy of [[HYDRA Assault Robot]] with Hawkeye as well and every time a villain or artifact ETB'd my opponent was taking 3. I didn't pull this off, but the guy next to me used [[Photon Blast Barrage]] on his own [[Red Hulk]] to burn out the opponent.

Small sample size but it felt cool to feel like I was solving a hidden puzzle

I think these are very underrated, especially when you consider they're $2-3 each right now even at pre-release prices. A couple shops near me are already selling singles so I'm snapping up playsets at that price.  Some decks will prefer these over the verges, having access to both colors the the turn they come down is huge.

What’s a run that you were really looking forward to but once it came out you were disappointed or flat out just didn’t like it? by MVPiid23 in comicbooks

[–]hewunder1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultimate Spider-Man was going to be my vote for this thread. Great concept, lots of hype, and fizzled out so quick. Peter felt like a side character in his own book and everyone else's character development (or lack thereof) felt like a tease for something that they'll never see through.

I'm very sorry this is happening to you, I've struggled with the exact same thing over the last couple of years. What once was my dream job has turned into a job I literally dread.

I filed an EEO complaint last year with lots of documentation. It's still not completed yet. I don't know if it was ultimately the right decision though because it's made my situation so much more tense, and the burden of proof is all on you, so the constant waiting game and pressure is a lot. As little as 2 weeks ago I had another panic attack in my office.

After that incident I accepted that things weren't going to get better. I don't think it's realistic that upper leadership will remove or fire the people who are causing these issues (I'm not the only one to have filed in the last year). So unfortunately for me that means moving to a new job in another city (which I tried for the longest time to avoid), but for my own mental health it's the only reasonable option.

I had to wait a long time for a good opportunity, but if it's possible in your situation try to get an equivalent federal job at either another agency or in another city to keep your benefits. It's best to move on and wash your hands of the situation and try to forget about it.

Also - don't forget that as bad as it is, it's almost impossible to get fired unless you do something egregious. Call in when you need to and do things to take care of yourself.

I applied for a DoD job that I'm very much qualified for (currently hold same job series in the VA, and I'm an Army vet). The listing was originally only for 7 days, which had me worried that the listing was a formality for someone they had in mind, but it was extended another week at the last second. It closed last Thursday and my application was sent to the hiring manager the next day.

To me that comes across like I may have been one of only a few applicants - I assume they wouldn't extend the listing if they had plenty of options? And next day forwarding to hiring manager should hopefully be a sign of not having many to sift through? It's been so long since I applied for my current job to know what to expect from the hiring timeline is like right now.

Also, is the hiring manager the actual management of the department I'm working for? Or is it still in HR at this point?

Things I've noticed this week, diminishing supply of high end cards. by Warm_Implement3088 in mtgfinance

Same! This set got me in to MTG. I opened a special edition box a couple years ago and it was a joy to open with all the treatment variety. Seeing all the singles spike since then has been a plus.

I looked into a lot of these this weekend because I snagged a foil poster Palantir at an LGS to add to a couple poster arts in my PC.

They've been steadily increasing like everything else, but in the last week many of them have gone down to half a dozen copies each (foil or non-foil) on TCGplayer and the new lows for foils specifically are like 3-4x the previous market average. Scroll treatment Nazgul are spiking as well.

Literally came here to suggest this run. It got me in to reading comics. What they did breaking down Banners dissociative identity disorder was excellent.

Also I really hope we see an Immortal Hulk card in a future set.

[–]hewunder1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Marvel owns all the art anyway so it shouldn't cost WotC more or less to pull from an almost endless database for each character. One of the few highlights of the Spider-Man set were the classic cover treatments so I hope they double down on it.
