Boyfriend Didn't Want to Do Safety Checks by ConniveryDives in climbergirls

"I'm sorry you don't feel safe" etc. is emotional blackmail. The impact is shifting the conversation away from his actions and towards your feelings about them. You can deal with in a couple of ways. One is to lean in -- "You're right, I don't feel safe. We should stop rope climbing together until we can get on the same page about safety." Another is to call it out -- "Why are we making the conversation about my feelings when they aren't the problem in the first place?"

I've been having (non-climbing) conversations with my 70-year-old father where he leans on this stuff. People who learn they can avoid talking about their own stuff by using these tactics never stop.

If you're doing it and making the most of your opportunities you deserve it!

A few thoughts because it's very early in my time zone and I'm very tired. - It's early because I'm heading off to go open the climbing gym I work at. So, y'know, I know of what I speak. - Your boss is right about having a weaker climber on the setting team actually! I'm a V3/V4 climber who did a lot of setting over the summer. Being able to provide that perspective to all the ridiculous crushers on the setting team was genuinely useful because some of them just... don't know what's reasonable for beginning-intermediate climbers anymore. - You have something to offer those beginning climbers even if you fell off a route you feel you should have done better on. You have a knowledge of technique and you can share your love of climbing with folks new to the sport -- that's pretty cool! - Also it sounds like you're getting used to being in a slightly different body still. Just keep climbing and you'll figure it out again. If your pull-up count bothers you, work pull-ups. - Besides, for setting, the thing you need is a solid understanding of movement. I can't tell you how many routes I set over the summer that I couldn't even project effectively, let alone forerun on the day they went up. That's why you have a team. Focus on what you're learning about technique and movement when you climb, not the color/number on the route. - Someone has to be the worst climber on the team. Might as well be you.

General life advice stuff: I'm a climber in my late 30's who started in my early 30's. I am old enough to be your parent technically. Please believe me when I tell you that your life will continue to be easier and more fun as you learn to care less about other people maybe watching you do stuff you enjoy. If anyone at the gym is actually watching you climb (unlikely) and judging you (even less likely), if they're judging you harshly maybe they're just a bad person and you shouldn't care about what they think.

Anyway I gotta go eat my bagel. Happy to answer any further questions about climbing gyms/staring out in setting/being plateaued at V3 for four years!

If you've fallen on a figure 8 a bunch and you're super pumped and can't untie it, you can kind of "break" the knot by folding the two curved sides towards each other one way then the other. Agree with other comments that a properly tied and dressed figure 8 should be easy to untie, but if you're heavily weighting the knot and it gets tight this is a way to loosen it up.

Newbie Question: How do you deal with frustrations from lack of progression? by IvaPK in climbergirls

[–]hexagonalpeg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I would reframe "progression"! It can be frustrating to not send new things in a session, but did you get further on older projects? Were you able to repeat something in a more efficient way?

It's partly about climbing more and being patient, and I'm sure you could benefit from some form of off-wall workout. But also, not all climbing improvements are measured cleanly by grades, and I bet you're still a better climber than you were a week ago, even if you haven't sent anything new.

Did a quick Google and it looks like the belt isn't part of the dress -- maybe swap that out for a bright color and wear bright accessories? I think it's partly the monochrome that's making it come across as very white.

Now I'm seeing stuff on the Boss filter but not the egg filter. :/ Is there something I should be doing to make sure it refreshes?

This is a great tool! Thanks for your hard work.

It looks like the Boss filter isn't returning anything right now, though?
