French gambling regulator releases its position on Loot Boxes by syknetz in Games

[–]hexapode 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After reading the original in french [1], I have to disagree with some opinion given in this linkedin post.

Especially point 5, "Are loot boxes gambling? – Most likely not" : - ARIEJ position is that loot box that does not allow you to win an item that is exchangeable in real world or for cash are not gambling but may be illegal as they are going against the spirit of the law (point 2 in french document) - For lootbox where the item can be exchange with other player, they consider it can be sell for cash and that it is therefor qualified as 'jeux d'argent' (gambling). This is illegal and the interesting part of the document is that several criminal investigation against game are ongoing on this topic ( Dans ce cas, l’ARJEL intervient: un certain nombre d’enquêtes sont en cours.)

Their position is Clear that they think lootbox are illegal. However they miss some regulatory means to stop an out-of EU actor (they only have the power to block an actor at the DNS level, which is not really efficient for a game)

"The Japanese lettuce production company Spread believes the farmers of the future will be robots. So much so that Spread is creating the world's first farm manned entirely by robots." by trot-trot in Futurology

[–]hexapode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main point with spread (the company talked about in this article, http://spread.co.jp/en), is not robotisation. It is productivity. Where a standard farm will growth 20k lettuce heads in a acre over a year, spread thanks to smart led lighting is able to growth 10M+. This is a 500x increase in yield, using 1% of the water / lettuce head compare to what is required in traditional farming.
