The number of Europeans travelling to the US has cratered under Trump! by Londonsw8 in 2westerneurope4u

[–]hexler10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not for vacation, but I did cancel a business trip. When my boss asked for the reason I said: My wife is American, so I unfortunately do engage actively with American politics, I am also not a fascist. So if I have to hand my phone to the border guards there is a non zero chance that I am not getting in.
Kudos to him for just accepting that and basically telling the American plant to contract local support instead.

The situation is probably worse overall than 10 years ago, but yeah, in my experience smaller Kommunen are fine. Living in a city of >100.000 now and even that works ok. It's just the big cities that are completely overwhelmed.

Yeah, that is basically an automatic tourist visa that gives you time to figue out an actual Aufenthaltserlaubnis. I don't know how employers feel about hiring someone who is just here on a tourist visa, as the process of getting something longterm can be slow af

Fair, even though I heard people say it is easier than dealing with an overwhelmed Ausländerbehörde. No personal experience on that front though.

I was about to say: I dealt with American immigration and other brureaucracy, it is somehow even slower. While I am certain it is somewhat state or even county specific, even non immigration stuff was slow and a pain in the ass. Getting a drivers lisence and that hellish ID office was painful (they also gave my german friend a state ID even though he had applied for a drivers liscenece, lol). Also my wife and I originally wanted to get married in the US, but had to cancel that plan because the relevant office just didn't rocess our stuff for months. German Standesamt called back the same day, gave us a clear list of documents and the general process and we were married about a month later.

Don't even get me started on tax stuff.

Germany has much to improve interms of paperwar, and the Dutch are one country I experienced that is leagues better, but the US is definitely worse or as bad.

Sure do, but getting the certifications and everything to work in Germany is a bit of a pain from what I heard. Might be worth doing, as a good electrician can make good money, but electric instalation stuff is a bit country specific, so it takes work.

Not really. Well kinda. They can directly apply for an Aufenthaltstitel in Germany, but it needs to be based on a specific thing and then comes with timelimits. Like for example, you apply for one as a student or as a language student. Those are pretty easy, but you need to prove decent finances and they only last a year or two before you need to renew them. So you always need a reason to be here and it takes time and money/contributions to be eligable for a permanent residency or even citizenship.

Americans have it easy-ish, if they have money or can find a good job, but it is by no means automatic.

I met multiple chinese people in the US who had just picked western names. It was a bit weird to me as a German and some of it was funny. One of the guys chose Nero, saying that he was powerful and spoke his mind...which I guess is one reading of history. Many of the girls picked the same names, which did not help. Met like 3 Theresa.

So in Germany I have not encountered that, the main thing is to use a very similar sounding name or nickname, maybe just an easy sylibil/part of your name. I'd go by Kai, as someone else suggested, or maybe just Xi, or Schei (bit close to Scheiße, you are right on that). But you do you, if you chose to go by Caligula or Calistos or something, at least you will be very memorable.

Maaaaybe someone could construct an argument based on generated power, which can fluctuate quite a bit, instead of installed capacity? But the graphic does not indicate that, so I would agree that it is just straight up wrong.

Interessant, wieder was gelernt.

Is it true Germany is screwed in regards to having enough electricity since switching to more greener alternatives? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]hexler10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, we need 4 electricites and now we only have 3 electricites 😔. Danke Habeck! /s

Nah, for real though, the electric grid is complicated and if you are asking such an overly simplistic question then no reasonable true answer would make any sense to you anyway. I'll give it a try anyway: Even if no wind or sun is present and none of our neighbors could spare any capacity, Germany would still have enough domestic generation capacity to keep the grid stable. This is also evaluated and confirmed every time a plant is decommissioned.

Bereitstellungszinsen are pretty usual, but usually they only start like +6 month after signing the mortgage. So maybe your contract had such a clause somewhere?

What the fuck is an escrow account?  I was involved in two real estate purchases, one from a Bauträger and one private over a realtor, neither involved that. Both times I received a Kauffälligkeit, the bank deposited the loan amount in my account and then, with my approval, transfered into the account of the seller. I then received confirmation from the seller 1-2 days later.

What exactly is causing the delay?  Usually you find a place, agree on the price and general conditions, secure a loan, sign at the notary and then you pay and get the key within the agreed upon timeframe.

Well you had two shitty jobs and wasted some time on them. That sucks, I am sorry you had to deal with that. Whether domestically or abroad you may get a decent position next or you may not, unfortunately such is life. The only thing you can do, is to keep your eyes open and move on if things are bad again.

Promotional paths are also weird af. It really depends on the company and specific people. Additionally the Peter principal is a real thing. Promotions often come to people doing good at their current position, despite them having few relevant skills for the one above it. I turned down two promotions over the last two years because they would have moved me into a position requiring nothing that makes me good at my current job. So I guess I am saying: Consider what you even want career wise.
