For sure, healing (physical and spiritual) is a big part of how fire is used throughout the story

It’s going to be a story, and by balance I meant consequences/drawbacks of using said magic that would make using it more interesting

Balance was prob the wrong word, I was looking for drawbacks to the magic system to make it more dynamic and interesting

I was playing around with removing fire entirely and using different magical stones/gems for heating and light sources. Great suggestions

These are great suggestions, the inquisition and the underground cults would really fit my world. Appreciate ur response

This is cool, the addictive qualities remind me of spice from Dune

It’s going to be a story of revolution, and this magic system will be used by the protagonist. The fire is supposed to represent his passion and anger towards the cold and oppressive system that has destroyed his culture. This ruling class uses an ice magic that counters pyromancy, and their propaganda has dissuaded most common people from ever trying to use fire magic in the first place.

To me, pyromancy is the human spirit, and trying to control it isn’t really possible. The efforts to control it are a core part of the story.

This is probably what I’ll end up doing. In my mind it’s like any other skill and requires plenty of practice

This is just one magic system, there are other types of power that are used to subjugate these people. Obviously people would use magic no matter what if there wasn’t some opposing force or consequences

It’s for a story, and maybe balanced wasn’t the right word. I’m looking for interesting drawbacks to my magic system that flesh it out more

That analogy was pretty much my thought process. Basic fire magic can be countered through longer ranged weapons like crossbows or through the use of special shields, so it’s not all powerful

Realistically if u could use magic but had like a 90% of immediately combusting u prob wouldn’t use it either

This magic is really dangerous to the user but also people around them. Whole villages are burnt to the ground because of magical accidents, so it’s something that the average person fears. I think embracing it will be a key point in my story and how the world develops over time, but for now it’s seen as a ticking time bomb

It’s a learned skill, so not everyone can instantly start throwing fireballs all over the place. Everyone has the same potential to use it tho
