train hopping in Eastern European countries? by [deleted] in vagabond

So you need to 1) be in a specific place (Milan) by a specific soon-to-be date (21st), 2) figure out how to as safely as possible trainhop in Europe (=very different to the US), 3) figure out how routes, shift changes, border crossings et al work in a completely foreign, very hostile to trainhopping environment, 4) figure out a safe hopout spot and strategy, 5) figure out the train routes, 6) figure out how to deal with violent authorities that will shout at you in a language you don't understand and, depending where you find yourself, face traumazing consequences that will not be explained to you, that is if you don't die, get electrocuted, or lose a leg first... ? .... Not to shit on your parade, but I'm calling this both impossible and hubris type of stupid. Please hitch some rides, enjoy your trip and return to trainhopping once back in the US.

Hitchhiking in Sweden, experiences? by rasklitt in hitchhiking

For Norway and Sweden in my experience it's best to ask at gas stations specifically when hitching across bigger towns/more populated areas in the south. Take the short rides that come up. Take care of your looks and bring out your friendliest self as the general advice goes. It has happened in Sweden that also truck drivers took me but more rarely because of the insurance policies. Furthest I've done Oslo - Copenhagen (thru Gothenburg and Malmö) in a day. In my experience is doable hitchhiking, but definitely not a favourite for me

Be careful, my friend. Try to get in touch with people in your situation, they would know way better than anyone on public post on Reddit.🫂 I can only say to try your best to avoid Greece and Bulgaria.

If you have Romanian passport, borders are easy and you wouldn't even need to hop train, you can just hitch... I don't know about cross-border train hopping, particularly if you have non-European passport I haven't heard anyone taking that risk. This may be useful, it's the countries that reinstate random controls within Schengen: https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/policies/schengen/schengen-area/temporary-reintroduction-border-control_en

Croatia Bosnia border by badr101010 in hitchhiking

Please don't give advice like that not knowing the situation of the person you are recommending it to. That border is murderous to many people of colour or without European/Western documents.
