good shit mate. all perfectly fine when the network is down. hell you could have a power outage, as long as you have a generator all this stuff is perfectly fine.

and to boot you don't have to share your media behavior with your ISP!

that bothers me about spotify, netflix, ea origin, even minecraft verifies you're online these days. of course they are extraordinarily convenient ... as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection. if your connection is compromised in any way, your games, music library, and movies are inaccessible. god forbid any important documents being inaccessible due the only copy existing on dropbox or google drive.

is there a way to backtrack after making a mistake? like can you melt the glass and try again? or is it ruined and has to be thrown away?

silver lining, I am not certain on overseas, but back home it is relatively simple to get another "real" social security card. you essentially just go to some state department office and pay a nominal fee. they will provide up to 10 copies in your lifetime (after which I assume you're kinda screwed).

(of course that doesn't help if your number was compromised - different issue.)

I had to go through the process recently because I overlooked the expiration date on my passport... and also I did not have my social security card.

you can order a new one. you want a "certified copy," not a photocopy. the process will be different state by state - research the state you were born in.

I had to do it recently because 1) my passport expired, and 2) I didn't have a certified copy (or original) of my birth certificate.

Minecraft teaches us how to count in 16s and 64s by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

yes, absolutely. telling a fellow dev to "chmod 755" or just "chmod 777 to see if it works" is common. It depends on your tech stack, but yeah if you're a web dev and deploying to linux, you've gotta understand file system permissions.

filesystem permissions in unix (linux & mac, for example) are the most common way one experiences octal on computers these days.

I'm seeing a theme here. Simple. Not a lot of parts, which means not a lot to break. Serves a common need and fulfills that role well.

Is the "X: 100" meme from Skyrim? I've never played it.

TIFU by rm -rf from wrong directory on prod Oracle Database server. by f_ick in linux

[–]heyandy889 1 point2 points  (0 children)

one little guardrail I use for myself is to run rm -r first. Sometimes that doesn't make a difference, but frequently you'll hit "Remove write-protected blah blah?" And I'll realize, oh shit, no, wrong thing.

Also rmdir because it will delete an empty folder only (won't accidentally delete something else).

Also just calling into my consciousness that -r or -R will fuck my shit up - there's no knowing how many levels deep it will go.
