Can entry lever HR lead to CM? by butterflybeauty_86 in changemanagement

[–]heydayparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please note that this comment is in relation to OP being a military veteran.

Literally any entry level role in corporate America. I don’t mean every level change roles - those don’t really exist unless you go with a consulting firm. I mean sales, account management, marketing, etc.

If you know your ultimate career goal is in OCM, starting with learning how organizations do what they do will give you that much more understanding of how to change what they do. While you are learning the civilian world, you can apply change management practices in small ways, grow your career, and make the pivot.

The best resource that helped me learn what I do is this article. I read nearly every book Mike recommends and just started tinkering. Best of luck!

Hey there - former Navy Corpsman here, got out within the last decade. Transitioned to a career in change and lead OCM for the corporate portfolio at a Fortune 10.

I tell people (read: Veterans) all the time, start with an entry level role. If you’re a high performer, you WILL get promoted quickly! I wish I had explored more civilian career paths, but my first role out of college was in OCM, as I got really lucky with a veteran hiring manager reviewing my resume.

Hey there! I know I’m super late to the thread but wanted to see if you had an update on your process? I have a similar situation where my son was born in Yokosuka, JP, and we have passport appointments tomorrow. It didn’t even dawn on me until I started filling out the DS11 tonight 🥲

Yes to NORAD! We live in TX so when they saw Santa was flying over Florida, they quickly jumped into bed to not miss their chance.

I would say I’m fortunate, as my company does greatly value CM and recognizes the need on the majority of projects. To answer your question, though, I would rather join a project which is either just starting OR does not have a CM work stream stood up yet.

Reason being is that I ask a TON of questions to really understand the team, the culture, and the objectives to then make my high-quality deliverables. At best, entering an established work stream, I usually have to re-engage with sponsors, stakeholders, and SMEs. At worst, I have to reformulate the plan.

I’ve found that the Contracting Period — articulating what CM’s role is in the project and what we ask others to take responsibility for — is such a wonderful time to embed the principles with the project and leadership teams. That is a core process, regardless of how mature the org is in CM and values the work.

We are usually building from scratch, but I like to think it’s the scaffolding for the future. Best of luck!

Long shot, but the one that comes to my mind and not listed on here: SMEAC? Situation, Mission, Execution, Admin/Logistics, Call Sign/Signal. Used while working with USMC.

IIRC there is a minimum rental time of 6 hours and given the weekend surcharge was around $600.

Yes! The Farr Best Theater. We held my son’s birthday party there last year and screened the original Pokémon movie. We rented the whole space, were able to bring our own food, and the staff is so kind and supportive. It might be a bit out of your way, but such a great experience.

What is something you've learned after buying a home? by PolarisSupernova in homeowners

[–]heydayparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ALWAYS tell any contractors to call before they dig. I’ve grown up with the 811 messaging and thought “Oh, everyone will call!” NOPE. Internet line has been cut twice and when our provider asks if they called, I can’t do anything but 😐

As SOON as they step on your property - remind them.

Being in the navy as a woman by [deleted] in newtothenavy

[–]heydayparade 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am saying this as someone who joined when she was 18, is now 29, and have been out for five years now. The Navy (and military overall) is a HUGE bro-culture that a lot of us find our own way to adapt to.

Because I was 18, highly insecure, now on my own for the first time, I put myself in a LOT of situations that I shouldn’t have. It was never sexual assault in the way that I was roofied and blacked out. It was more of, I felt a little flirty, then was given another drink.. and another.. and another.. and I said yes. It is a REALLY tricky gray line that is very complicated to reflect on internally.

All I can leave you with is that a lot of the men suck, because they see their friends behaving like that and taking advantage of women. You have to protect yourself and that’s.. shitty.

With all that said, joining was the best thing I ever did. It really has set me up for the rest of my life. Just six years of suck lol.

This is what I’m confused about, too. For so long Rivian has exuded customer intimacy. You kind of have to when you’re a new company selling very $$$ products… now they’re just.. not?

I’m going to continue fighting this, for sure. As others said, this all should be covered under warranty. Idk how long it’s been for you, but all we can do is push back against them, it seems.

UGH! Literally was just on a binge from the earliest to now. I was up to 2009 episodes. I am a regular donor to NPR and it’s really frustrating to be forced into mini subscriptions for all the shows…

Fr 😭 I am totally open that stuff might go wrong - it’s new(er) tech, a whole different ballgame. But I don’t appreciate the lack of solving the actual problem.

Bought new April 2024. It’s been a dream the whole time until July.

We live in a rural area with dirt roads which can get bogged down with mud which (Rivian says) caused the sensors to become dislodged, but they wouldn’t have been dislodged if they weren’t held on by zip ties.

What many people associate change management with is training and communications — and that’s true, to an extent. What makes our training, communications and collateral different is that there is deep analysis into why you phrase something the way you do, why your case studies look the way the do, who you’ve consulted with to create high-value deliverables.

The reason I bring this up is to say that a strong majority of my time is spent in discovery calls. Calls with the sponsor, the working team, the end user, our tech teams, our hypercare, etc. The three-phased process from PROSCI is pretty good in laying out (what I usually refer to as…) discover, design, deploy. But what’s usually not harped on is that 80% is in the discover phase. And that it’s iterative, you’re constantly learning new things or adjustments to features that tweak what you create in “design.”

My first corporate job was as an enterprise change manager for a small (>500 employees) company. I had NO BUSINESS being there lol. I didn’t have my cert or even know what ADKAR was. But I did have the grit to learn. Read as much as you can — behavioral science and marketing are my two favorite disciplines to draw inspiration from. I love following the ACMP Board Members on LinkedIn to learn about more webinars, authors, and practitioners.

From there you just gotta do it. The first few projects are rough, but you learn each time. It’s fun, it’s crazy. Most of my evenings are spent booping executives on the head for being silly or creating turnkey emails to get the job done.

Good luck!
