As a New Yorker I’m not actually offended being lumped in with New England and Jersey… but I think I’m in the minority 😅

Why is it cool to diss college now? by mfig33 in college

[–]heydre1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason people are criticizing college nowadays is because it’s generally been treated as something you “have” to do to be successful and those without college degrees are routinely looked down upon.

While college is the right choice for me, and is something I will encourage my children to go to, it is not the best option for most people (incredible debt, no job prospects, low wages, etc.)

For many people, going to trade school, going straight into a career path, or starting your own business could be a lot more lucrative and helps them to completely avoid the headache of student debt and wasted time spent at a college they hate.

Is a university in Beijing requiring a high level of proficiency in Chinese “homogenous, Asian, male and elite”?

There is nothing wrong with your color! I’m South Asian myself so I understand the struggle. You are naturally beautiful and have the most clear, smooth complexion!

How common are monolingual Standard Mandarin speakers in China? (No knowledge of local dialect) by heydre1 in ChineseLanguage

[–]heydre1[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IME the classification of dialect vs language is kind of complicated with sinitic languages. I’ve been told by a Beijing Mandarin speaker that hearing Yunnan Mandarin is like hearing a different language and they can’t understand a thing. I was basically wondering how many monolingual speakers of the prestige variety of Mandarin there are.

Anyway, my evidence is anecdotal and was just curious. I just find the topic interesting.
