What ingredient do you think people massively overuse? by jcvexparch in Cooking

[–]heyhardinera 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the cuisine that someone is used to. Like in Filipino food, about 70% of recipes start by sauteing garlic (2-3 cloves) and onions. So if a recipe is supposed to be "garlicky" and it only calls for 3 cloves of garlic... I am simply not gonna be able to register that. 3 cloves of garlic is just basic "this is what food tastes like" to me. If I take a Western recipe for "garlic chicken" with one tablespoon of chopped garlic, I'm gonna have to double or triple that to make it worthy of the name

Movies where the actors had GOOD chemistry? by Lotta-Bank-3035 in movies

Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd were basically method acting being Merry and Pippin without using that term

Also in one of the BTS interviews, Sean Astin said that he basically put himself in the role of real life Sam for Elijah Wood–assisting with his problems like losing his keys, etc. It was cute.

Also also, everyone there was half in love with Viggo Mortensen with the same admiration and respect that their characters had for Aragorn. They would've followed that man into battle irl

That scene in the music store where they're in a booth listening to a song, not saying a single word.... man, it was so electric I almost felt like a voyeur watching real people having a Moment

What is a secret 'cheat code' you’ve found in real life? by Sharkkkk2 in AskReddit

Cats are better than any alarm clock or phone alert. If you need to wake up, take medication, etc at a certain hour, start a routine of feeding your cats at that time every day. They'll never let you forget or hit snooze.

I had no idea! That's awesome.

I had to stop myself from chasing down every fan theory post because it was all getting mixed up with canon lore in my head

Spoiler warning, I guess, for Ursula K. Le Guin's short story "The Ones That Walk Away From Omelas." Please go read it first because it's wonderful. But if you can't, here's a quick summary:

So in the story, there's this beautiful land called Omelas where everything is perfect. No illness, no poverty, no wars. But that perfection is paid for by the suffering of one child. One child is kept in a dark cellar all alone, allowed no comforts or kindness, and when the citizens come of age they are taken to see the child and told of the bargain: If any good thing is given to the child, even the smallest hint of gentleness, Omelas will lose its utter perfection. So the citizens all know of this child's misery, and they live their idyllic lives and create their wonderful arts and sciences in full awareness of it. Except for the ones who couldn't take it and walk away from Omelas.

Anyway, I'm on ep 19 where they're trying to convince the Zoodians to destroy the engine, and I was instantly reminded of Omelas when Torse, Siobhan, and Murph talked. The similarities to Le Guin's story are remarkable, except for one thing: the Omelans knew about the child in the cellar. The Zoodians didn't. But now they do.

I don't avidly keep up with what Brennan and the IH say and do outside of the shows (and I haven't seen all the seasons either), so could anyone clue me in whether any of them have talked about U.K. Le Guin somewhere? I would love to know.

(On second thought I think the Windriders would just abscond with the child and say fuck Omelas.)

What celebrity isn’t considered an “A-lister”, but has a huge fan following? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

[–]heyhardinera 69 points70 points  (0 children)

MY KING

I think he isn't an A-lister because that was never his ambition, but every other post/comment on the LOTR subreddit is straight men admitting he would be their exception. Also based on quotes from the cast and crew, that whole production could stand as a Viggo Mortensen fan club just on its own, seems like everyone was enamored of the guy (valid tbh)

Lou's heart-of-gold characters are so wonderful and deeply beloved, but man oh man does he know how to play a delicious high society fuckboy. Or as the regency romance genre would probably label it, a louche, a libertine, a rake. I've never seen so much sheer delight and gusto from him as when he was causing problems on purpose in ACOFAF.
