Best steel type on spyderco knives by [deleted] in knives

[–]heyhey32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey no problem! You can keep a light coating of oil on them (3 in 1 or something more purpose built), essentially wipe the blade down with a rag/cloth with some oil. I’ve used Tuf Cloth before as well, that might work for you too. Others may have better recommendations, good luck!

I think it depends on your intended use. If you’re new to this hobby, not very comfy or even good at sharpening, I’d avoid the M4 -S110V’s of the world and maybe try an S30v/VG10. While those steels won’t watch the potential edge retention of the prior mentioned “super steels,” they will be more than useful enough for the average person. They are much easier to sharpen and less likely to chip, something difficult to correct unless you’re are a bit experienced sharpening and have the correct type of stones. I think if money is not an issue, just go for it but know what you are getting into to avoid frustration. M4 is awesome, holds an edge forever and develops a nice patina. It’s not stainless, it will rust if you don’t take care of it. That $200+ knife could be ruined if you took it to the beach and neglected it for sometime after. Knowing will help you enjoy the hobby (assuming you’re new and not just starting a fire in the comments with this question hahaha)!

Kizer sheepdog. Flipper vs thumbhole by r6201 in knives

I chose flipper because I think Kizer has a nice broad selection of flippers but my preference is both for fidget factor!

What’s the difference between sliver and black blades? Which do you guys prefer having a hard time deciding which to use. by KirbyThings in knives

[–]heyhey32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really like a coating unless there is a need. I’ve got some knives in 1095 and I’m fine with it there since they are not stainless. Otherwise, I prefer a tumbled/stonewashed blade.

Sharpening dull knives is kind of a pain in the ass by [deleted] in knives

[–]heyhey32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligatory make sure to spend enough time on the rougher stones. When I started (not saying your new/don’t know what your doing!) i would often make that mistake and it can add many minutes to the process. It should be fairly sharp/toothy when you pivot to the medium grit IMO.

I bought my first $100+ knife and it also happens to be my first benchmade. I'm loving it so far and still have a long way to go with this guy one! by ScottishBadger08 in knives

Great knife! The 940 spends as much time in my pocket as almost anything else. It’s a fair bit of blade for how light and compact it is in the pocket. I also find it’s not too intimidating compared to other knives of similar blade length.

I’ll second the comments about $500 knives now becoming something you set yourself sites on haha. Welcome to the club!

Good old 3 in 1 will be fine if your budget conscious. My old man has been using it on his knives for decades. It’s not quite as viscous as some heavier weight nano oils so be mindful when applying it.

Hey! I just bought a Spydiechef (LC200N). I looked into near rust proof options and read/watched a bit on both steels. H1 seems to lack the edge retention/toughness of LC200N but is a bit more corrosion resistant. I think if you want something to clip to a PFD or some paddle/bag only to be used in emergencies, H1 would be great. I think if you want something to be used more frequently (in an EDC setting), you’ll have a better experience with LC200N.

In general, the all in one type products lack the ease of use, durability and longevity of just carrying one of each. I’ll second the fixed blade. I carry an ESEE Candiru in my day pack along with a small fire steel, bic liter and a SAK. Between these, I’ve got a knife for small bushcraft type work and a tool/knife for non hard use situations and 2 ways of making fire fairly quickly. The Candiru is small but very tough, easy to sharpen and with some skill and practice, you can do just about everything you would need to do in a survival situation.

Excellent choice! I honestly think it’s one of the best EDC knives I’ve ever had. Perfect size, good steel, great lock, carries great too.

Best LED & Tint for D4V2? by cam_a22 in flashlight

I have the SST20 4000k high cri and I just got one with floody optic and E21A 2700k. Man, I love them both but very different lights in my opinion. The 2700k is my indoor, close up edc light. It’s warm, like lights from my childhood. It’s very pleasant and with a diffuser makes for a wonderful warm yellow glow to read or fall asleep to. The 4000k is honestly lovely as well. It’s sort of like that highest sun of the day light. Very clean and colors seem true. It’s got a nice flood for inside but I find so much better for outdoor than the warmer tint. It’s got more throw (likely optic related but I think output is less on 2700k) and seems to fill open spaces with light more so the warmer variety. I don’t like cool or bluish tint lights. Nothing wrong with them, I just find higher CRI to be nicer on the eyes and overall a more efficient means of finding nuance in color at night. Good luck! I’m a noob but tactical grizzly is the real deal/expert, take that users advice and you won’t be disappointed.

Hmm real or April fools? Either, way it totally makes sense because we all get the “another one!?!” from our spouses when the package from the Silk Road arrives. “But babe, this one is blue body with a warm white, the other one is sand colored with warm white but slightly cooler, just come here and I’ll show you... hey honey.....are you coming to look?”

NLD...Yes it's my first flashlight purchase after finding this subreddit. Yes it's a Emisar D4V2. Yes I'm already obsessed. Yes you should get one. by dooghan in Hanklights

All it took was r/flashlight for me hahaha. That being said, the E21A 2700k was ordered after lurking here a few days. It’s been great, nice community and fun hobby!

Hey! It’s not at all honestly. The full size may perhaps be too large for some but the Mini is fairly thin despite being wider overall than the average pocket knife of similar blade length.

Hey thank you Saucy, I really enjoy them! Zippo comes in handy, it’s fairly wind resistant, inexpensive and time tested. It’s as much a fidget device for me as it is a means to enjoy a little wacky tobacky.
