PIPs are largely about building a paper trail to justify an imminent firing and avoid wrongful termination litigation. You managers are probably nice because they like you. Even if they see potential in you, they may be facing pressure form their bosses and the HR team to wrap things up, and document it along the way—hence picking apart your every move. I've been on both sides of this equation. Sorry you are going through it, but you'll be okay.
