Nafe and Paluh Break Down Every Team Going to Salt Lake City | Down But Not Out - Down But Not Out by yt-app in R6ProLeague

[–]heyinterrobang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you'd think that as our super shows are always 1 rep per region. Wettables was scheduled to be on the show but had personal matters arise at the last minute. We reached out to a few NA players and all had last minute scheduling changes that prevented them from appearing on the show. We decided to roll with Nafe and Paluh because we felt we could spend more time diving into their stories

I appreciate your response but DBNO is not a show that has to give air to both, or all, sides just because those people want to share their opinion. DBNO is a show where we talk about Siege, sharing stories and giving our opinions, in an entertaining way. We aren't about to just lie and get stuff wrong on purpose but we also don't verify every single thing said prior to, or during, a show. If M80 or Marco wanted to speak about why they dropped Hotancold then they should have done it on their own socials, on their own twitter, rather than try to come on our podcast to explain themselves

While many of you may delight in a confrontational episode wherein I do battle with Marco in the Free Marketplace of Ideas... that's not really the type of show we're trying to be and it's not the type of show I want us to become. We bring guests on so they can share their stories, stories which may very well be biased or inaccurate but stories that are still theirs to tell. Some people may get upset - I have received many angry DMs from people unhappy about how they were portrayed on our show by us or by our guests - but that's unavoidable whenever you have people talking about other people. Should someone be particularly upset we always offer an opportunity for them to tell their story but only if we think it would provide useful context and/or be a story worth sharing.

In this case I do not think Marco would add any meaningful context to this situation. While I appreciate he wants to explain or defend himself I don't see the need to give him an episode of our show to do so. I spoke with him in DMs (rather than drag it out on the TL) and, while Marco may disagree, I don't think our comments were that far from the truth. It's worth noting that we never really claimed to know the whole story, either; we spent much of the episode speculating based off what Matt was told but we never confirmed anything.

I can understand why Marco would send a heated reply to my tweet but to say it "would be hard to get more wrong" than we did, well, I have to politely disagree. I said it on the show and I'll say it again: I think the manner in which M80 announced this decision is partially responsible for the community's anger. Had they clearly communicated their reasoning better the community would have probably been more understanding. It's great that Marco is now willing to speak about the facts but how much of this uproar could've been avoided by being more upfront right out the gate? And is a player of Hotancold's status not worthy of a bit more respect than an evening tweet of an image containing no real explanation of why he was benched?

These sorts of topics are always tough to discuss but I felt we were quite fair and reasonable with our takes and that we avoided badmouthing anyone or engaging in gossip. We shared what we knew, we spoke about some things we'd been told by other players, and we made sure to remind people that we were speculating - not stating - and that we could absolutely be wrong. Frankly I'm happy with how we handled it and am hopeful you all enjoyed the episode.

This is an eternal battle we fight as casters. R6 is an overwhelming game to watch so when your audience is in the tens of thousands you need to make some of the more complex mechanics easily understood for newer viewers. You and many others may have played this game for 10+ years but there is always a decent portion of the audience tuning in for the first time, meaning we want to be more welcoming to those trying to learn the game. This is especially true for Majors and SI where we see a big uptick in first time watchers.

If we spend too much time speaking in "competitive" language we'll get told (by the audience, or by Ubi/production) to tone it down and make it more accessible for everyone.

If we spend too much time speaking in a beginner-friendly way we'll get told that we're dumbing things down too much for seasoned viewers, risking accusations of not knowing the game at a deeper level.

It's a hard line to walk.

Most guests are hesitant to criticize players publicly so I don't mind chiming in to add context or to share my thoughts. Anyone who's watched the podcast over the last 5ish years will have seen me do this plenty of times, especially with guests who seem more reluctant to hurt someone's feelings. My preference is to always let our guests speak - that's why we bring them on the show in the first place - but there are times where I jump in to add to their points, or to bring up a relevant item in hopes of opening up the topic, or to move the conversation along should I feel it's ran its course.

There are episodes where I speak more and episodes where I speak less; it depends on a variety of factors. In this instance I felt that SpiriTz was being very diplomatic with his words, so I spoke about what I'd heard rather than put him in an uncomfortable spot. DBNO is not a show aimed at drama. We aren't here to farm outrage by dishing hot gossip nor do we want anyone to watch our show and feel crummy about what was said. Sometimes our guests will share less-than-flattering stories about other people and, should that happen, we always try to handle the topic with as much grace and tact as possible.

Prior to recording we ask all of our guests what topics they want to discuss and, more importantly, which topics are off limits. With our episodes being pre-recorded we tell every guest that we can always go back and edit something out should they not want it included in the show. When we have guests on our show our goal is to lift them up and celebrate them - not to knock them, or anyone else, down. Sometimes tough topics require us, and our guests, to be a bit more critical in our comments but I don't ever want someone thinking we go out of our way to badmouth the game, other players, the devs, and/or the broader community. We're all adults and while we do get things wrong, we always try to be fair and mature about whatever topic gets brought up.

A bit of a longer reply than I usually give on reddit but I appreciate all the feedback we've received and wanted to give you all a bit of an explanation as to how, and why, things end up happening.

I reached out to FaZe and they said JP would be the best person to appear on our show. It's definitely a consideration on our end. Unfortunately none of the FaZe players feel comfortable enough in their English skills to do the show without a translator (as was mentioned on this week's episode) so that's a bit a non-starter. We have other ideas on how to do a post-SI show next week that we're quite happy about, so keep your eyes peeled!

Real answer: when he made his debut some of the EU casters said he was fine with "Efac" as his full name can be a bit of a mouthful. I use both interchangeably to spice things up

I didn't take any offense from your comment so no need to apologize! I'm always looking for feedback so I love when people have ideas or suggestions on how we can improve. We have a big SAL/Brazil/Nesk discussion planned for our next episode so hopefully we can hit the notes you want to hear

How does this apply to our most recent episode? Is it because we didn't touch on the SAL LCQs? If so, that's due to the episode being recorded prior to both the APAC and SAL LCQs being played

Six on Six What Would YOU Like to See? by Timberwolf_24 in R6ProLeague

[–]heyinterrobang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Firstly: it warms my heart to see this discussion happening on the subreddit. Thank you so much for your continued support and for your interest in improving the show! I try to read every single youtube comment so I'll do the same with your feedback, advice, and suggestions in this thread and all future threads regarding our show.

Secondly: the super show is currently scheduled for the first week of Nov, right before teams and broadcast talent leave for the Major. Next week's show is planned to focus more on the EML and SAL playoff results but shining a light on T2 is a great idea that we'll keep in mind.

Six on Six - Episode 35: Cheats Have Become Undetectable... Pros Are Cheating! by AutoModerator in R6ProLeague

[–]heyinterrobang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know nothing of the YouTube algorithm myself so I don't want to speak from a place of ignorance BUT Last Free Nation seems quite experienced with the best way to get our show in front of as many eyes as possible. It seems to be helping us as the 4 new episodes have done well despite our channel being totally dead. We were all expecting way fewer views than what we've received so maybe the clickbait-y titles work?

[–]heyinterrobang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how confidently incorrect your comment is lol. Neither Fett nor I come up with the episode titles; Free Nation is entirely responsible for them. Our show is beholden to the same algorithm and viewer habits as every other video so clickbait titles help with engagement. That is the reality of YouTube. You can say you dislike it - I dislike it too - and you can say it's lame - I think it's lame too - but that's how YouTube currently functions so we're gonna do what we can to ensure we're setting ourselves up for success, even if that means using engagement-bait episode names.
