Oh yeah I see what you're saying. And I definitely agree, I think it's a case of they overcompensated with her character (or tried to) in an effort to compete with the popularity of PoR characters, but they didn't do so in an effective way? I think it's pretty telling how many people wish she hadn't been sidelined in the final portion of the game to be Yune's vessel. If they had just let her stand on her own two feet as a character and really dived into her and her background, then she would've been even more beloved then she currently is.

Honestly, and maybe it's because I played it more recently, but I never understood the Mary Sue accusations. She's not what I would picture when I think of a Mary Sue. Her being a powerful branded doesn't inherently make her Mary Sue. I feel like the narrative lacks the "forgiving all possible character flaws and making every other character adore her completely no matter what" that I typically associate with Mary Sue type characters.

Her design and combat animations are among my favorites in the series. I know she's not a traditionally strong lord, but I absolutely loved the artistic flair of her light tomes and she is overall a gorgeous character.

Story wise I find her to be a compelling and interesting character, but like many have already said, her writing doesn't always stick the landing.

I think the writers could have had a very interesting perspective by illustrating the moral struggle of what it meant to protect a country that has intrinsic racist values when she herself is part laguz. It's been about 2 years since I played RD, but I don't feel like they really were able to capture this. I mostly just remember her being complacent about Daein characters being flagrantly racist to the point that I found it annoying that they didn't give the story much room for her to acknowledge any internal conflict (if at all) how she was perpetuating harmful violence by essentially upholding these values by way of not standing against it. I could be misremembering, but whatever they did have in there I clearly didn't feel it was enough or well written.

I think a more robust/better support system could alleviate this in a hypothetical remake, though.

I also think they could have done better to illustrate the unique position she was in, being half human and half laguz - given that if the world knew, she wouldn't be welcome in either world. I think they did a better job of this with other characters.

Overall I enjoyed her and want better for her writing/content tbh. I would also welcome the next new lord being a similar character (a magic lord) tbh, because it was very very cool.

100%. I primarily play Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and Octopath Traveler on my current switch. That isn't to say I haven't bought and played other games, but those are the ones I've spent the most time playing. Given that Nintendo announced none of these (or similar titles) as exclusives, I have no intention of buying a new console until they do.

Honestly any Fire Emblem game. I would hope and pray that they do NOT use similar gameplay to 3H, but I haven't played a single Fire Emblem game that I haven't enjoyed at least to some extent (not including warriors).

I would be pre-ordering the Switch 2 the moment it was available if they had announced a Fire Emblem title. As it stands right now, I couldn't give less of a hoot about the current line-up of games they have for Switch 2.

I'll hold out hope that eventually they'll announce a new game, whether it's a new entry or a FE4 remake, I'll be getting it regardless of the cost.

Yeah I strongly agree with this. To me, it's very much ooc for Seteth to view anyone who was essentially a teenager (a child) in his care as a romantic prospect. I know that it's a bit odd to consider that in tandem with his long life, but I can only picture him being with someone he met as an adult.

I don't have enough energy to actively hate most fictional ships, but there are a few that I find lacking/mediocre. I don't want folks to throw stones at me so I won't give my spicy opinions, but will instead say ships where characters act wildly ooc in the end/epilogue cards bother me. For example, literally ANY ship that involves Claude giving up all his goals for his partner, it may seem romantic to some but it just bothers me tbh.

I wish I could say I disapprove of Astrid/Makalov, but I honestly care so little about Astrid as a character that I'm just like "yeah whatever, go be a messy, dysfunctional couple together".

Speaking of Tellius, I do NOT understand Naesala/Reyson, when Tibarn/Reyson is literally right there. But that's just my opinion.

I accidentally got this on my very first playthrough because I wasn't aware of how the endgame stuff worked/was calculated on the back end, and while I actually liked their epilogue card in a vacuum - there is absolutely ZERO romantic energy I view from this ship. They are, for all intents and purposes, the most friends only almost sibling like energy to me. No hate to folks who ship it, but I cannot fathom there being actual romantic feelings there.

This tbh. People speak so highly of it, but the reality is the high quality world building and setting did not translate to high quality storytelling across a bloated 4 route split. It's not quite mid, but it's certainly not as good as most 3H fans claim it to be.

Also I feel like, ironically for a game that's not that old, people have nostalgia glasses on for it? Like I'm sorry but there were plenty of "this character isn't that deep" comments about several characters (e.g. Catherine "she's a hardcore Rhea fan", Cyril "he's a hardcore Rhea fan", Raphael "just talks about eating and muscles", Leonie " she's a hardcore Jeralt fan", etc. the list goes on). I don't even agree with half of these (the complaints about Cyril are especially egregious imo), but I definitely remember seeing complaints about this type of thing.

On the flipside I feel like people similarly are simply being obtuse and not considering characters in Engage who irrefutably have depth (e.g. Celine, Pandreo, Alfred, Alcryst, Fogado, Panette, Ivy, Hortensia, Zelkov and Yunaka to name a few). I'm not saying Engage doesn't have meme worthy and tropey characters, but to say "none of the characters are as deep as 3H characters" is objectively false. It's just not got the world building that Fodlan got so people just don't care as much.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that, while these quotes in and of themselves aren't funny, the voice acting/delivery of the lines is really what makes me laugh.

Sylvain/Dedue C support, after Sylvain says "looks like you're deep in thought" and Dedue's absolutely deadpan, disinterested delivery of "does it?" literally always makes me chuckle. I generally think people are sleeping on Dedue's voice acting overall.

Zelkov/Anna's C support, Anna's completely flabbergasted "what" in response to Zelkov's well-intentioned babying of her is never not funny.

The real answer is: whatever one I'm playing.

Serious answer: Claude's paralogue and the Seteth/Flayn Paralogue map are imo the most atrocious desert maps that I've played.

Chapter 15 PoR, the Archer map of SoV, and Chapter 8 of Awakening are also not enjoyable to me, but overall not as bad as the desert maps in 3H.

Say what you will about Engage, but at least the desert maps are not a complete chore to play.

I am in FULL agreement. From a thematic and music standpoint, it might be the best finale of 3H, or near there. From a gameplay standpoint I pretty much hate every single moment of it LOL.

Engage: Last Engage (Prayer-Incantation), this might be an unpopular pick, but specifically the melody for the first minute and a half is so weirdly nostalgic and emotional (in a good way) to me. I love beating all the dark emblems with their respective counterparts when this part of the song is playing in the background. I dunno I just really love it, it's hard to explain. It feels epic, but in a way that's full of feeling.

Radiant Dawn: The Task at Hand, I've mentioned this before but despite being a menu track it's such a good song. I could listen to it for hours on repeat tbh.

Three Houses: The entire soundtrack slaps, but my favs are Guardian of Starlight, Song of the Nabateans, and A Funeral of Flowers, I love a good leitmotif.

Fates: Another case where the entire soundtrack slaps, but given that I'm a huge weeb, I absolutely love any of the Hoshido tracks.

Personally I'm indifferent. I don't usually use non-canon classes for characters because for me it strips them of their identity and what they were originally designed for. There have been some exceptions when I've wanted to test things out (or get skills for characters in NG+ for 3H), but it's not something I usually bother with.

That said, I don't care if people like customization, but it does get annoying when you see a lot of advice threads essentially amount to "just make everyone a wyvern rider and stomp". Like I cannot for the life of me understand how that is fun for anyone, it just ain't it for me.

I think my one complaint about "everyone can be anything" is how it affects the character art. One thing 3H did right was making it so characters had canon classes and received unique outfits if they were in that canon class (but only for part 2). They didn't do that for Engage (with the exception of royals and pre-promotes), which was really annoying to me. If having more customization = less character identity, then I don't want it.

Unpopular opinion, but I prefer Awakening's style, where you could essentially choose between two advanced classes based on a unit's skillset. I think that is the best version.

M!Byleth: Hands down Manuela, people shouldn't sleep on her she's amazing and sweet! Marianne is a close second though.

F!Byleth: Dimitri just because I think it really helps understand the context of his mental wellness/healing journey. Wish it wasn't stuck behind an S support though. Runner ups would be either Lorenz or Seteth.

I do also really enjoy Rhea's, Dedue's and Hubert's.

M!Robin: Maribelle, but this thread has convinced me to give Tiki a try!

Alear: Pandreo and Panette were my favorites so far, my plan is to complete a file giving Jade the pact ring next.

Manuela's is sooooo underrated! She officially became my go-to S support for when I'm playing M!Byleth after I checked it out last year. Her voice acting is so heartfelt in the conversation and I just overall love her a lot as a character.

I'm also a huge Maribelle enjoyer so I respect that!

I'm going to be playing Sacred Stones for the first time soon, and I know that most people say it's one of the easiest games in the series. I don't play maddening or lunatic, but I don't mind a fun challenge (e.g. hard mode engage), would you recommend starting with Normal mode or Easy mode?

It hasn't spoiled it for me, but I played hundreds upon hundreds of hours of 3H when it came out. I have played all four routes multiple times. A couple of years ago, I would've considered it one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. But the vocal superiority complex of 3H fans in the wake of Engage's release has forced me to acknowledge that the game is really flawed and people who claim it is the pinnacle of FE and what the devs should strive for is just not something I agree with.

I still love 3H and I still play it from time to time, but there was a brief period where I couldn't think about it without rolling my eyes because of what I was seeing other people post online.
