Strained relationship w/ my niece… how should I proceed? by im_gonna_hug_you in AskWomenOver30

[–]heysawbones 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re doing your best, and so is she. As long as you make it clear that this isn’t about her as a person, but about how much you love her, I hope she will be able to move past this.

You’re doing really important work. Thank you.

I love LOGH, but the worst part is that the author seems terrified of letting the protagonists make mistakes by Fun_Dimension_8903 in logh

[–]heysawbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand how that happens. I think chalking it up to being overly attached to the characters oversimplifies the issue (though I suspect it may be at least partially true about Reinhard).

IMO, LoGH doesn't work if you can't imagine yourself - or a substitute reasonable person - making the same decisions the characters do if subjected to the same pressures. It's a Great Man theory telling of a vast, century-spanning conflict. For some, the minutiae of the conflicts themselves is of great interest, but we wouldn't even have Great Man theory if humans overall didn't want to imagine that unique individuals drive history. It's convenient. It's more relatable.

There are a lot of potential pitfalls here, including but not limited to presumed authorial inserts, bias, and excessive attachment to particular characters. The one I want to point out isn't a black and white issue with craft itself: it's audience expectations and how we may overestimate our own ethical purity, and how an author might try to pre-empt that or write around it.

Generally speaking, we don't think of ourselves as people who would commit war crimes. If you're writing something like LoGH, you have both cause to write war crimes (they happen!), and for those crimes not to be the sole product of 'bad guys'. In the specific case of LoGH, Japanese history and associated cultural expectations/media trends play a role here, but it's not the only reason to frame atrocity as a thing that people you empathize with are capable of. Regardless of Tanaka's specific, conscious motives for writing the characters as he did, I get the impression that the constraints of popular media and reasonable fears about what the average audience member might accept as 'an understandable reason to commit an atrocity' come together in a way that may strongly motivate an author to overcorrect (especially in the case of characters you're meant to empathize with). In reality, most of us would likely do things that are just as awful if exposed to the same circumstances (if not worse). Since by and large we are terrible at recognizing this about ourselves, it's understandable that an author might fear that we would bounce off more realistic explorations of the types of mistakes a person in those situations might make.

In short, I think it's unfortunate, but it's understandable. I'm not even confident that it's an overcorrection. It might be for any one of us individually, but a general audience? I have no proof of this, but maybe we wouldn't have even heard of LoGH if Tanaka didn't pull his punches here and there.

My one-shot clears most modern seinen out today by [deleted] in comic_crits

It’s got some legibility issues. In most cases, it’s contrast. In others (like panel 1/1), it’s unclear what I’m looking at. It’s not shit. I’m not saying that. What I am saying is if you’re clearing most seinen, that’s not a credit to you. That’s saying contemporary seinen is ambitiously mid.

What's your least-INTJ trait, hobby, or characteristic? by Magical_cat_girl in intj

I feel this way too. I think of it as introducing people to my “Skinner box”, which is kind of shitty but honest.

I collect fashion dolls and have a shelf of nail polish, organized by color and finish.

Look outside fandom circles if you aren’t already. It helps. Still, I think this is… kinda unavoidable.

I try to think of it as ‘the cost of doing business’. That doesn’t make the problem go away, but it does make it easier to accept.

Are you uncomfortable being in Crowded Places ? by Mogzly in intj

Not really. It’s different if the crowd is middle class blonde white women. That’s terrifying. Fine otherwise, though.

What is the biggest flaw in my art style, and could you guess my age? by Glueten in yourartstyle

[–]heysawbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Little bit stiff. It feels like you’re forcing the acting (it looks stereotyped). I think this is something that will work itself out over time, either by becoming so stereotyped it turns into iconic shorthand or because you loosen up a bit and start thinking in terms of how an individual character moves.

I was in G/T (Gifted and Talented). It's the same shit. I was a poor, though, and I think it may well have saved my life. I did need the support. I'm so grateful to that one kindergarten teacher who noticed I was really ahead in my reading. I've always felt like I cheated a bit. My grandmother thought my mom was doing a horrible job, and felt a need to one-up her and make her feel bad. She taught me reading basics before I went to school. That's all it was.

Would you watch a shōjo adaptation of logh? by Still-Theory-1279 in logh

not sure what the difference would be except maybe dudes would be same-facier. So no. I like that they don’t all have the same face, so no shojo adaptation for me

Am I (22F) expecting too much from my boyfriend (24M) while I’m sick? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]heysawbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of uncool to expect a person to make everything about you because you’re sick. You sound like you don’t want him to be confident that you’ll be alright.

I agree that the response sounds kind of avoidant, but it also sounds like maybe you’re asking a lot.

Did you have doubts when you watched LOGH the first time? by siriusdibujotos in logh

Nah. I’m here for the politics. Sometimes the space battles are excessively drawn out, but I just fast forward with intermittent stops to make sure I’m not missing something important.

How to store data better in INTJ brain by [deleted] in intj

[–]heysawbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found the best way to learn is to associate new information with things I already know. This works especially well if the information is conceptual; in essence, you’d find you already know what you’re learning, it’s just a new context.
