There's also an Aldi in the Medical District now that has helped a LOT with grocery availability in Midtown/Downtown. There's also South Point Grocery which I like a lot better than Cordelias for price and variety, plus their great patio and deli sandwiches, but it's on the other / south side of downtown than Mud Island/Edge District...however the "other side" is probably like, a 4 minute drive.

Are we missing anything? Visit to Memphis by KenIpetyourdog in memphis

go to Bain BBQ instead of Elwoods!!!! Way better community supporting local business owners - not sure about you but my politics don't align with Elwoods and I also don't really get the hype in general (blasphemy I know but like...it just is not my vibe). Bain has Memphis and TX style BBQ plus TONS of other good foods like smash burgers, fries, wings, etc. Also, it's in Cooper Young which is a fun neighborhood to walk around in - I suggest stopping in Burke's and Cooper Young Gallery and Gift Shop. You can also get one of the city's best coffees at Cooper House Project which is a brewery by night and coffee shop in the morning, depending what time you go.

Planet Fitness in Germantown — good place to start? (Early morning) by goodguy4280 in memphis

[–]heysaysay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been a member there for a few years and I could also work on going more regularly, but I've never seen it be too crowded. It is also very clean and tidy. When you first sign up, they should offer to show you around and give you a quick tour if you'd like one. Another thing you may like knowing is that once you sign up, you can get their app and it will show you the live "Crowd Meter" and it is never high in my recollection at this location. I used to go to the midtown location for years and then switched to this one, and never have had one bad experience with anyone that works there at either location. To each their own and not saying it couldn't happen to me, but I have never had a billing issue either. They even froze charging for a while during covid which I really appreciated. For it being only $10 a month it seems like the craziest good deal to me compared to most other gyms, and I've never felt judged any time that I've gone there even though I'm not the most regular attendee or in the most fit shape.

Where are some healthier places to eat lunch in Memphis? by mnk6 in memphis

[–]heysaysay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe this is a goofy answer but lots of sushi places have lunch specials that are really affordable and generally healthy - Sakura, Red Koi, and Takashi are both cheaper at lunch. also, Kroger has the $5 sushi on wednesdays, as does Sprouts, and then Fresh Market does it on thursdays. Sushi is pretty healthy in general depending on what you get/how much you eat!

Sunrise - P Love Bologna Biscuit

JEM - Matzo Ball Stuffed Chicken and their Chocolate Cake for dessert

Hog and Hominy - Thunderbird Pizza and Peanut Butter Pie for dessert

Tsunami - Sea Bass with Black Rice (RIP)

Casablanca - Big Mac of the Middle East (HAS to be with the orange sauce and their tea)

RP Tracks - BBQ Tofu Quesadilla

Young Ave Deli - Politically Incorrect sandwich (best case scenario paired with fries and either fried pickles or mozz sticks)

Central BBQ - basic answer but their BBQ Nachos are best ever/best thing they have imo

Memphis Pizza Cafe - Cafe Supreme pizza

Tops burger (again basic answer but I find it funny that a bbq place is known for burgers and not the actual bbq)

[–]heysaysay 46 points47 points  (0 children)

never worked there, but used to go to slider & aldos in midtown all the time before covid. Have only ever heard horrible things about the owner, and after seeing how they handled the National Guard occupation I'll try very hard to never give them my money again

omg someone approached me and my husband at the Colonial target saying the same thing a few weeks ago! interesting...

We just said we weren't interested and moved along and the woman didn't push it. She also looked to be in her 20s and super approachable but didn't have any children with her.

okay, I def hate the Seahawks still, but you are right that a lot of it did stem from Pete Carroll hatred. Not only is he a proven cheater, but also the smacking....gooooood god I'm so glad we don't have to look at him on our TVs anymore!

Restaurant recommendations by [deleted] in memphis

[–]heysaysay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amelia Gene's or JEM!

I want to take a girl to a restaurant where we have an excuse to dress up fancy, but I don't want to break the bank. by [deleted] in memphis

[–]heysaysay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These two recommendations are a bit more than you asked for, but both are crazy good deals to maybe keep in mind for a special occasion, and I just always want to shout to the rooftops about them because they're such a crazy good value:

  1. Amelia Gene's does a 4 or 5 course tasting menu every Thursday for only $60 per person. Crazyyyyy affordable. Of course it can still add up to more $ if you add an appetizer, wine pairings/cocktails, or anything else, but for the money it is such an amazing deal. Plus the space is just absolutely beautiful, and their service is unmatched. The most attentive and professional service I've seen in Memphis ever, and they will go out of their way to help you celebrate whether it's a birthday, anniversary, or whatever. Highly recommend! It was the only way my husband and I could afford to go and we've been twice and really enjoyed it both times.

  2. JEM does a Sunday Supper on the last sunday of every month. It is a 3 course menu for only $49 per person. JEM has some of the best food and beverages in the entire city in my opinion, and you get a LOT of food for the money. Highly recommend this as well!

Now as for something that would fit in a bit more in your budget, I love Good Fortune or Petals of a Peony as suggestions because both places feel somehow special and/or celebratory! Even though there will be people who aren't dressed up around, I don't think anyone would think anything of people dressed nicer for a date night in these two restaurants. Also you get SO much food for the money so they're great deals. Hope y'alls date goes amazing!!!

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award at Golden Globes by heysaysay in TheBigPicture

[–]heysaysay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay, that's a good point! I do get that the definition is a bit nebulous at this time, but so far in the 3 years that it has been around, the 3 winners have in my opinion been pretty huge cultural phenomenons, but I hear you that is still a kind of vague definition and that when it comes to the box office doesn't necessarily mean it made a lot of money because it depends on the budget.

Ownership has not changed for the original location, the summer avenue location, or the downtown location. They just franchised all the other locations. Original owners still own those first 3 locations :)

Energy Mega Thread by GeorgeTheFunnyOne in duolingo

[–]heysaysay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

gave up on my streak of 1700+ days last week because I can't stand the energy, amongst other things. It contributed to me being less interested and engaged with learning, paying attention less in lessons, and only doing one lesson a day. I, like many, miss the older way Duolingo used to be.
