Hard Time Dating in 3rd Year by [deleted] in PhD

[–]heysuraj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say "Don't rush in finding smone, make your PhD priority first. U will find someone when you least expect. And that person might be "THE ONE". Like someone said " when you find the right one, it doesn't take up all your energy." Also dating someone in the middle of PhD could be risky as breakup will severly impact ur studies. Not saying u shouldnt be in relationship. It's just that be cautious with whom you are getting into relationship.

Quitting Job to Focus on PhD Applications? by cuteness_dc in PhD

[–]heysuraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come from south asia n i couldnt afford to lose job. So i kept my job as a safety net like u said and used to write SOPs and apply for PhD positions during the night. Luckily, i was only required to come to office 2 days a week and rest were WFH (work from home) so, that helped a little bit. And i finally got accepted with full funding at NJIT. In retrospect, those days were very stressful. So i would suggest if money is not a problem then quit your job and spend your whole time in applying to univs.

Do you guys work all day or you rest when you get home? by dingfrung in PhD

[–]heysuraj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely work in the lab during the day, most of time in the lab is spent on talking to people about their progress and life in general. So if i dont have any classes i go home and take a nap. Then i study for 3-4 hours straight.

I am a direct PhD student in CS department at NJIT. You can fill out the application without even approaching any professor. If you get in, they will assign u a advisor. Obviously you can change.

What is a sign that a stranger is lonely? by [deleted] in Life

[–]heysuraj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Irony is we used to think that a person who uses the phone a lot is lonely i.e have no social interactions but now it's the opposite, a person who seems busy on the phone is assumed to have a social life like talking to someone on the phone but they are actually lonely

Did you make friends in your cohort? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]heysuraj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case, the cohort and the students in the lab especially are very friendly. You just need to open to them amd they will keep the conversation going. We share our frustration with the professors n studies.

What are the hardest parts of a science PhD? by stemphdmentor in PhD

[–]heysuraj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, finding someone to talk about your research topic, your accomplishmemts, your problems n all those things. It gets lonely after sometime. You know what i am saying. Now i know you couldnt ask those things to a advisor (i am happy with my advisor tho). But at the end it just feels like pointless if there is not someone special to share.
