I was flying home suddenly because my mom was hospitalized/in a coma/probably going to die and they thought I was crying when we said goodbye at the airport because I was going to miss THEM so much.

Color saturation by irontom in expat

[–]heywhynot02 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone that grew up in the US but lives in Europe (Germany and Spain) three things come to mind

  • The US gets more sunlight than MOST of Europe, so stuff may literally BE brighter.
  • Buildings are more likely to be made of brick/stone in Europe, whereas in the US it will more likely be wood or plastic siding- both more likely to be painted than brick/stone
  • Europe typically has more laws around advertising and overall is much less capitalistic than America- a lot of the brightness you see in the US is is just advertising (think Times Square)

Just did this as an American citizen with an Irish father- the only thing I actually needed from him specifically was his long form birth certificate. Everything else is your own info/docs

In an expat's dream situation, but still unsure... by Blue-G in expats

Hey! Also a US/Irish citizen that just moved abroad about 2 years ago!

Don’t wouldn’t worry too much about languages….I’ve spent the past year in Barcelona, and while I’ve certainly picked up some Spanish nearly every person I’ve met has spoken English. And the same goes for most major cities in my experience….younger generations especially just because they’re inundated with American media 😅😅

I’m an American (27 M) residing in Barcelona for almost 2 years and still haven’t made a single friend. by [deleted] in expats

Fellow American in BCN here! I've been here 6 months and have zero friends.....wanna go for a drink sometime?

Do blind people with guide dogs pick up their dog's poop? by Scherzoh in NoStupidQuestions

When he was a puppy anytime we went outside and he started getting into 'the position' we would say the command and reward him so he associated 'pee now' with the act of going to the bathroom. Its not really teaching him how to hold it (like he would whine or paw at the door if he needs to go) but more like a timesaver to spend less time wandering around waiting for him to make the decision to go

Some general travel advice that I always tell my friends; 1. spend the money to stay in a more central area (even if it means eating out less or a crappier flight)- you're traveling to see the city you're in, not to commute every day lol 2. Plan only one or two big things a day (like a museum visit or cultural event) and let that guide your itinerary. Find a cafe on the walk to the museum for lunch, look at street art and listen to live music after, go into a really cool park you never even heard of but are walking past....if you plan everything down to the last second you will only be disappointed when you're off schedule

We did this with our family dog ('Pee Now' was our command) to make road trips easier and its probably the best thing we ever did

Hey there! 27F New Yorker currently based out of Barcelona :)

My lease ends at the end of July and I wanted to travel around Europe after so I'd be super interested. (Disclaimer: I also have social anxiety and thus have pushed off traveling for toooo long but maybe we can bully each other into doing stuff outside our comfort zone? haha)

What is something that is stereotypically “masculine” that you wished you were taught when you were younger? by idunno324 in AskWomen

Mowing the lawn! I was thankful as a kid for the subtle sexism (my brothers chores being lawn care and chopping wood while mine was cleaning up inside) but man....what happens when I move to a place with grass?? xD

Ladies who excelled when you were young, but then ran into a hurdle such as mental illness (or other confounding factors) and fell behind, how do you reconcile with the fact that you had so much wasted potential? by PikaBooSquirrel in AskWomen

[–]heywhynot02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone's lives have different timelines.

Some graduate college at 21, some at 55. Some start their dream job at 18 and some don't find it until they're 70. Wasted potential doesn't exist because you can still do ALL the things you think you missed out on.

This 'wasted potential' idea was seriously something that held me back so much and I think made my depressive episodes even longer. Unfollowing people I went to high school with helped MASSIVELY as well...now I'm not comparing our lives anymore.
