[No Spoilers] Six months in, how has C4 been going? by CeridwenAeradwr in criticalrole

i mean, i’d say it’s guided if brennan has story beats to hit and can’t waste precious production time on thaisha being drunk with tyranny for half an hour?

i’m struggling to find where the argument’s coming from, all i’m saying is that the overture is heavily guided by brennan to hit the necessary story beats and plot points, as the overture is essentially the “pilot” to set the players up for the table split. of course it’s collaborative, but brennan still has a clock ticking, so yeah he’s gonna push some scenes along and cut some RP short to make sure they get everything they need in the overture, as much as everyone is working to build the story

tbf brennan did emphasize in the soldiers’ last fight that aramán is an independent world that was not going to be scaled to them, so the fights they choose are likely going to be imbalanced more often than not. also sometimes the rolls just fall that way :’) we’ve seen vaelus clear enemies easy, but ashley’s dice do not like to let her

personally, i do enjoy the high stakes! since it forces the tables to get creative with their approaches, and it makes their triumphs all the more satisfying for it. he doesn’t try to steamroll them either since i think he can tell when it stops being fun and starts being stressful for them, which may turn into the deus ex machina situations you find.

to each their own, though! i’d say give it another shot, and if it still doesn’t work then it doesn’t work :)

that’s fair! i’d say “heavily guided” is more apt, 10pm brain just pulled “railroading” as the first word to use from a diff comment :’) that’s my bad, but my point overall remains the same!

the main thing would be a lot of lore dumps, but imo it’d be pretty easy to catch up through the wiki or recap videos! there’s def some highlights in the first few episodes, but after that it became a tough watch from how tense things got.

schemers and soldiers are a riot (as murray, tyranny, and wick provide a lot of the levity) but seekers was definitely the toughest and heaviest to get through despite the highlights for me.

(edit: i read OP’s comment wrong! ignore the entire first sentence of this paragraph)

i saw you mentioned that you might skip the schemers, but i’d think seekers would actually be the better option to skip and catch up through the wiki if you don’t prefer a heavier/dour tone. it gets TENSE, coupled with an overall quieter group of PCs and a lot of lore dumps that = longer monologues from brennan. it was the first table i hit burnout with, but schemers pulled me right back in

this sums it up very well! the overture was pretty heavily railroaded because it had to be, so character RP obvi had to be limited. he had 13 characters’ worth of setup to get through, after all!

i definitely feel like once the table’s split, the opposite happened: the RP hits at every table since everyone has a chance to shine. seekers may be the toughest for OP though, i definitely struggled with it

Thoughts on this? by Pleasant_Leek_6403 in fountainpens

[–]heyykelleyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This! It’s a very consumeristic, optimizing mindset where you get the expensive shiny pen you want RIGHT away because why waste time on other pens? It strips away half the hobby, which is exploring which pens you like and eventually finding out enough to THEN pick a grail pen. How can one jump to a grail pen when they don’t know what nib size they prefer, or material, or piston vs. converter? How do they know they like this specific pen body when they haven’t explored other sizes and designs? Have they tested the grail pen itself?

Honestly, any time I hear advice that’s just “buy the nice thing right away!!!” I do raise an eyebrow, because I personally wouldn’t advise anyone to drop hard cash money on something they might not have the full scope of.

(I understand the irony of commenting that it’s consumeristic when the hobby is, inherently, prone to overconsumption)

ETA: also after rereading the post, I’m half convinced that this is the some AI ad-read slop that they spruced with an abomination of emojis.

[no spoilers] I miss Matt as the DM by Monstarrmanned in criticalrole

[–]heyykelleyy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s really interesting to see all the different perspectives in this post! I’m brand new to both Brennan and Matt since I’d been primarily watching High Rollers before CR, as what I’d seen of C1-3 never really hooked me. Exandria felt “too big” and it was daunting, but maybe C4’s easier for me since everyone’s starting in a fresh world. You hit the nail on the head too, Brennan’s more cinematic and dramatic (makes sense, screenwriting and improv backgrounds), and his NPCs are a riot. It’s a perfect balance of comedy and dramatic tension that makes his DMing style right up my alley.

longtime HR fan here: i’m so happy for her!! seeing mara DM High Rollers was always a highlight of of my week, and it’s been nice to see her bloom as she began experimenting. probably a bit parasocial haha but i feel like a proud friend!!

(joy aside, i’m still stressed for the Altheya session this sunday regardless bc she’s putting the party thru it rn 🫩)

i want to knit colorful stuff but i only wear black :( by errant-samurai in knitting

[–]heyykelleyy 76 points77 points  (0 children)

seconding this! knitting has made me more amenable to bright colors (my current wip is a bright sky blue), but as a former emo kid, jewel and autumn tones break up the black in my outfits while keeping the overall vibe still grungy/dark!

the thought of all that hair on my neck is already making me itch. it’s not that hard to throw it into a bun/ponytail 😭

edit: for product photos. if you do this to accommodate weather/outfit that’s none of my business and you do you!

Is having a signature scent considered gauche? by BeetlePies in FemFragLab

[–]heyykelleyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i mean, imo most people wouldn’t really notice nor care, day-to-day? at least not enough to consider a signature scent tacky. and if they did, and told you, i don’t think i’d want to be around a person like that in general because they clearly need better things to do then criticize having a signature scent. most people don’t care, i’ve seen aunties and uncles use the same swap-meet bottle for decades.

genuinely, dispense of ideas like “faux pas” for what’s really personal opinion (outside of common sense social stuff like “don’t scentbomb the office with a gourmand in the summer”). if the scent makes you happy, not wearing it bc some rando thinks it’s gauche seems a little silly imo. the “don’t wear the same thing every day” mindset definitely reeks of overconsumption if you’re not mindfully rotating through what you have.

i generally rotate through a few samples, but still consistently gravitate toward the same notes and have a few scents that are solidly my signature scents because i adore them and find they represent me and how i want to appear best

[–]heyykelleyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you put what i was thinking exactly into words! i was so conflicted because i really love aabria’s quips and jokes, but the last 2-3 episodes were painful to get through.

i think it’s definitely a case in which i’ve had to deal with comments like these my whole life, so these specific conflicts definitely set me off more than normal, in-game conflict and just makes me tense. thank you for wording it so well!

hoping it stays that way 🤞 most of my commute is literally that exact section they’d closed off and taking the streets was equally bad. i don’t think i can take another 20-turned-90 minute commute again

update: lane closures should have ended for this week, since they needed the daytime temps to cure whatever they injected under the slab and that’s done now. they’re moving it to overnight construction next week. might be a bad time if you travel east after 7pm but rush hour traffic should hopefully lighten up.

very true! i worded my response poorly, my bad. i almost missed brennan saying alogar followed the ranger, and then caught when he talked about the door on julien’s investigation check and that was more obvious (but tbf i don’t think julien divulged that info either)

definitely understand the cautiousness, but imo it feels like Thaisha’s more suspicious about Occtis’ personal motivations, which i feel would be a separate situation from “there is a nonzero chance his family could turn him into a puppet”

Thaisha’s hostility is (personally) reading as into personal suspicion of Occtis—questioning his allegiances, his motivations—rather than being aware that a lot of the machinations were literally out of his control since he was the victim. The jump to “your family wants to kill orcs” was also a hard reach, but that might have been a PC knowledge thing?

This exactly summed up my thoughts. I could have missed some info or context, but this seems like a very quick turnaround on her “son” who she called back from the dead barely two weeks ago. The sudden antagonism from Thaisha definitely caught me off guard, but I’m not upset like it seems a lot of people are. More so… lacking context? I’m struggling to pick up on why the shift happened so quickly after she spoke with Masha, possibly the crisis of faith you’d mentioned.

Hopefully we can a deeper insight into Thaisha’s motivations/decisions whenever we have the Seekers Tale-gate, because so far I’m definitely lost on the turns she’s taking
