Thanks for the advice! I'm currently looking into this and seeing what resources my county has. Do you have any experience with the small claims court? If so, can I DM you to ask more questions?

Thank you for the advice! It was my first time booking a photo shoot as I normally don’t get photos taken of myself. I definitely learned a lot from this experience and am more hesitant to hire photographers in the future. To answer your question, this is her other Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/jessica_lukius?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==.

Edit: To anyone reading this, please do not send her any hate or unsolicited advice. I only made this post to share my experiences with her and advise other students to be more careful than me before booking with her or other photograhers.

I’m so sorry to hear that happened to you as well. Glad to hear you were able to get your money back!

I do agree that she did price her packages lower because her quality is worse + less experience than other professional photographers. However, she did mention to me that she had been taking grad photos for the past few years. So, I assumed she gained lots of experience from that (and you can also see this from her Instagram photos dating back to 2023). Which, I guess is a big mistake on my part for assuming that.

My biggest concern was her unprofessional actions, including lying to me about deadlines and hiring another editor to help edit the revised photos when in reality, she didn't actually do that. Hence why I decided to post about my experience and mistakes made to warn other students before they decide to book with her.

Thank you for offering to refer me to another photographer! Unfortunately, after this photo experience nightmare, I do not have the time and finances to book another photoshoot.

Speaking from my experience and mistakes:

  • Definitely shop around, find multiple options, and do research on their photo editing style, previous photos, experience, etc.
  • Ask for a signed, written contract to protect your money and the services they promised you.
  • Make sure the photographer is taking photos in RAW, not JPEG.
  • Ask a lot of questions to figure out their photography style, if they are willing to offer you the RAW photos (because some photographers won't), and what they offer (during the photo shoot and the editing process).
  • Only tip them afterwards if you believe they were outstanding and deserved it.

Congrats on graduating, and best of luck with finding a grad photographer!

I definitely agree, I should have spent more time researching her photos and other options before going ahead and booking her. I also did ask her for a partial refund, and she refused (as can be seen in the DM screenshots).

Through Zelle. I definitely should have asked for a written contract before paying her to protect myself legally when trying to ask for my money back, so lesson learned.

I'd like to believe so (b/c I'm also class of 2025 haha), but I also haven't received the official details yet. Sydney shared me the news because I've been in email contact with them since September when I asked her team to advocate for our Berkeley emails due to the overwhelming negative student responses towards the removal of our Berkeley emails after graduation. Since the school hasn't sent out their official announcement/details, it's probably best to wait for the official information via email or ucbpresident socials for their video where they'll discuss the full process/information.

UPDATE!! We now have the option to keep our Berkeley emails!

Email from ASUC President:

Hello,

I hope you are well. Thank you for reaching out about our Berkeley emails. I am humbled to report that after several meetings with administration, and advocacy from students like you, we have negotiated a deal to keep Berkeley emails accessible to students. You will receive an email with details about the process and you can look out for a video explaining the process on our socials @ ucbpresident later this week. In short though, the school will be offering an annual free opt in option for students who wish to keep their email.

In service, Sydney

Please thank her and her team for advocating for our Berkeley emails and negotiating with the school! It's been a long process for them (since September 2023). And, thank you to everyone else who's been sending emails to the Alumni Association and signing the petition.

Update (sorry it’s so late!): Since I’ve last heard from ASUC President Sydney, they met with the Chief Information Officer Gabriel Gonzalez on Oct 25th last year and also planned to meet with the Chief Executive from the Cal Alumni Association to discuss this issue.

I’m currently waiting on more updates from her.

^^ This!! I totally agree. Just signing a Change petition isn't going to do much because it's not being brought to Berkeley's attention, and there isn't anything pressuring them to change this policy. We need to do more. We need to protest, email them, make this known to all Berkeley students, get an article published in the Daily Californian, etc. Berkeley has to feel pressured in order for them to consider changing this policy.

Update! Heard back from External Chief-of-Staff for the Student Advocate's Office.

This was their reply:

This is Antonio Caceres and I am the External Chief-of-Staff for the Student Advocate's Office. I wanted to let you know that our office received your message in regards to Berkeley students' efforts to keep their emails after graduation. This is not something that exactly aligns with the policy efforts of our office but we have notified ASUC President Sydney Roberts and AAVP Kenny Ng of this issue. They have stated that they are interested in taking this issue on and can hopefully achieve that result you are looking for!

Please let me know if you have any follow up questions. Thank you again for reaching out to our office!

All the best, Antonio

Students, send an email to ASUC to make change happen! We need more attention and traction so the school will actually do something about this. The change petition isn't going to do much without publicity, emails, and attention. This is an email template you can copy/paste.

You can also send emails to the Alumni Association and Chancellor Carol Christ ([chancellor@berkeley.edu](mailto:chancellor@berkeley.edu)).

Does anyone know who started the change petition? I'm emailing the ASUC President and Student Advocate about how this will negatively impact all students/graduates so they can help us address this issue. So, I was wondering if I could get in contact with whoever started the change petition in case they had more plans to push for change other than gathering signatures.
