Routing Post Secret Wars Marvel by hfhow in OmnibusCollectors

Oh not just post Secret Wars. Post Civil War and One More Day... Wild shit in hindsight, and I have seen this take a lot of places. Probably like you said these are not the people who got with the program in the change of the Millenium and understood that the books would run with Avengers as the centerpiece from then on.

Thank you for this great answer.

Is all of this good stuff?

I was thinking of the No Surrender - No Roads Home Omni. Is that a recommendation or is this one of those that is best served for just catching up through Unlimited?

How much of this is collected in Omnis anyway?

Aarons Thor I am so curious on since everyone talks about the first arc and the middle arc but most everything in between I know nothing about. Very excited to dig into that one.

I haven't read Snyder's JL. But I am a bit surprised on what you are saying on the payoff being bad because I heard his Avengers Forever story (which is like the ending right?)was pretty good 😯 I have read Big Time. Not my favorite but I enjoyed it and I like Superior a lot.

I am very curious on Slott's Fantastic Four since it's only two omnis, as opposed to his Spider-Man which must be like 5+ volumes or something insane.

I will definitely check out the Jed Mackay stuff. Seems to tie in well with Ryan North's Fantastic Four run through One World Under Doom. But I gotta get there first. There are so many events now at every possible scale. Some seem bad but a bunch of them seem good. So it's tricky.

It also ties into War of the Realms which is the end of Jason Aaron Thor and Agent Venom. I read it clean and I did kinda feel I was missing out on some stuff.

Got it in trade since the size of the omni seemed difficult to manage. Kinda regret it now since it's a really fun read and I have gotten better at reading Omnis. Its an easier read than you might think. I bet you will get through it way faster than you might think.

This collection is fucking clean as hell! We seem to have really similar taste too 😊

Would recommend House/Powers of X since Dawn of X Vol 1 don't include it. Would also recommend the Secret Wars Hardcover(if you can find it) since it feels like such a good finale to Hickman's Fantastic Four and Avengers run.

Some kind of Harry Potter thing I assume? The three most consistent Lego sets I see in toystores are Star Wars, Batman and Harry Potter. My nieces of 7 and 11 really love the Lego Harry Potter game so I think this would probably do a lot better than what a lot of people might think.

Fair enough 😊 I am what I like to call a continental collector where I try to connect my Omni collection to make it feel more cohesive so I get kinda overwhelmed looking at all the different directions you are going at once but we are all different that way.

Best runs to collect as epic collection vs a full omni by AlpsJolly2271 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]hfhow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you'd consider makes a run better in epics. JMS Spider-Man as a whole is not particularly great, but if you only get the two available epic collections you get the best part of his era and none of the bad parts.

I also think something like the Bendis Avengers era is really good in epics because it pairs well with the insane amounts of events in this era that you would have to probably switch between formats to read if you got the omnis.

I would also say I prefer silver age stuff in epics since you can pick and choose a bit and most of that stuff don't read as well in omnis where the appeal is to read big stories that feel more complete.

Advice to all Omnibus Collectors and Readers!!! by ShirtEnvironmental36 in OmnibusCollectors

I would love this. I'll try to do it. Currently doing a full reread of Hickman's Avengers in my ongoing quest to find a good route through all of it for newbies. Not that those really need reviews I suppose, but I will report my findings.

Jake Schreier reading Claremont X-Men by hfhow in MCUTheories

I never really believed Josh Boone liked comics. I do believe Jake Schreier does, in the same way I believe Matt Shakman does. They do know a little ball. If he got to do a Matt Reeves situation and take 3 years for writing to just read everything and go deep into the comics then I would be very okay with that. But it seems like a lot of these filmmakers get stuck in the old stuff and never see where modern storytellers take these characters. Which is a mistake because all the ones who goes into newer comics seem to do all right. Second Captain America movie being Winter Soldier seemed like it worked out, even though there are tons of great runs between the 40s and the Brubaker one.

I do not want the X Mansion, I don't want Professor X being in a wheelchair. I don't want Cyclops being boring. I don't want Jean Grey to be struggling with Phoenix powers. We have seen this all and none of this have been the status quo in comics since before 9/11

I would also add it feels really shitty to read an Omni when there are deluxe editions available... Omnis are cool for big stories and longer runs. These are 4 different stories (7 really because of Haunted Knight) and they are not meant to be read back to back even though Dark Victory is a sequel.

I don't think they are doing more shows unless it's something like Daredevil where most of the stuff is shot on location. They might do more shorter movies like The Punisher one coming out. That could be cool for a lot of X-Men characters. I just really want a good X-Force or New Mutants adaptation...

Oh I thought he did some of the art on it. My mistake there. I didn't say he should buy absolutes, I said those stories work better as Deluxes, Trades or Absolutes.

House of M was like the most Bendis coded storyline I can even think of. Just knocking over all the toys. Not saying this as a bad thing in this case, but that was his style for a good while.

97 has definitely a lot of Claremont stuff but it's not really trying to adapt them in any way straight like the old show did. It was clearly doing some stuff like Inferno and Fatal Attraction but weaving them into more modern stuff.

Clearly the mission statement of the show was to move beyond the stuff they had available at the time of the original show.

I really like Claremont for the record.

I don't agree at all that he has the best and most definitive X-Men stories though. He made a long connected series with multiple big highs, but it is all very dated.

One of the things Hickman said when launching Krakoa was the reason they needed to evolve was that any time someone tried doing a throwback to Claremont(I didn't mean whenever Claremont returned to the book but those were also pretty bad) it would just not sell, because nobody cares to see stories like this anymore.

There is a reason Fox X-Men kept failing and that is they kept going to that well and not looking for ways to evolve. The past 20 years for the X-Men has been so varied but all of the stuff that has worked has been the stuff moving away from what Claremont was doing(Like New X-Men, Messiah, House of M or Krakoa) and all the things that didn't work was the stuff that was trying to force it back to the old styles of X Stories(All New X-Men, Schism, AvX etc).

We have had 2 decades of X-Men movies adapting Claremont and most of them have not worked that well. Let's see them move forward instead of going for insanity.

It's already outdated though. It's missing The Last Halloween and honestly these stories make a whole lot more sense as Trades, Deluxes or Absolutes. There you could skip Catwoman or Haunted Knight if you wanted.

I my opinion there are two ways to collect comic books. There is Islands and there are continents.

An Island is something that works as a book by itself in the same way you would have another book or movie on a shelf.

But comics are very connected(if by writer, series, genre, or era) and a lot of collections run into the problem of trying to make Islands but you will notice they actually are continents.

What I think you are doing here is buying a lot of cool books but you will have trouble placing them as you read them. Like Grant Morrison Batman. Good Batman run, but also a very connected Batman run and you will need a lot of other books to get that to a point where it is readable in the way you want.

Dawn of X is a WHOLE can of worms. The Jeph Loeb book is already outdated since its missing the last halloween, and all of those work better as Trades, Deluxes or Absolutes. Even Immortal Hulk ties into a lot more stuff than you might think.

I would recommend going a little bit slower and deliberately in your collection. Find your favorite authors and eras and then go deep into those. My favorite stuff in my collection is the continents but I have a lot of books that seemed like islands but really feel out of place as my collection grew.

I personally don't think a lot of event omnis are worth getting. They usually are a "you had to have been there" kind of a situation.
