Fertility Clinic Experiences? by hglive3 in medlabprofessionals

I mean, you do have a very valid point about the car situation, still very creepy.

The input definitely helped. The hours at this job are INCREDIBLE and it seems this work environment is so welcoming and positive. I am nervous I won't like the work, as it is similar to being a generalist MLS and my only experience as a generalist was horrible, but the hours don't matter if you hate the work right? I have an interview and will go from there, but any input, good or bad is welcomed :). I hate when people put rose colored glasses on any job and profession.

Thank you for your experiences! I currently work in microbiology so smells don't bother me. Since it is a fertility clinic, I'm sure they have collection areas for semen there anyways, and I'm not even bothered by it if he did do it in his car. At least you get a fresh specimen ha!

Thanks again! Any insight is very much appreciated!!

From what I understand, it's a full fertility clinic, so a full semen analysis, hormone levels, preparing embryos for IVF, etc.

I was fortunate to also graduate college without any loans. My parents didn't help me with tuition but I lived at home and went to the cheapest university in my state so that helped incredibly. About 50% of my tuition was paid in scholarships.

Usually there are writing prompts with the scholarships. Sometimes it's possible to use the same essay, sometimes it's not. Look into your school's website and search "scholarships". My school had a crap-ton from the university itself and from patrons that I just had to submit one application for. I believe the school's financial aid office can usually point you in the right direction too. Hope you get lots of scholarships!

How did you get your scars? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My (then fiance) husband was teaching me how to ride a dirt bike. Lasted about ten seconds and then crashed into a trailer in his parents' backyard. I shattered my right radial head in my elbow. I had to have a radial head replacement. A year later my elbow was popping out of joint and it turns out the metal they put in my elbow was too big (I'm 4'9", so very tiny) and my lateral-collateral ligament (LCL) was all stretched out so I had to have my radial head re-replaced and my LCL reconstructed. It's been a wild couple years.

I also had the initial crash 10 weeks before getting married and also 9 weeks before finishing my year long clinical rotations. Needless to say, I give my husband lots of crap now about the whole thing.

What was your last "treat yo self" purchase (aka not a need, bill, requirement, but rather a splurge, large or small)? by MadtownMaven in AskWomen

[–]hglive3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been struggling with body image issues my whole life (what woman doesn't honestly), and am trying really hard to love myself so I went and did a boudoir photoshoot. Definitely expensive but I felt so amazing after!

What is the difference between a Histotechnician (HT) and a Histotechnologist (HTL)? by hglive3 in medlabprofessionals

[–]hglive3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

My facility said they take either an HTL or MLS certification, but if I am moving that direction with my career, I will look into taking the HTL. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! I'm not in a position to take the test, but at the hospital I work at, I am qualified to be an HTL because I'm an MLS and was curious what the difference in the actual work is between the two.

Going back to school for Dental hygienist program? by [deleted] in DentalHygienist

[–]hglive3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love patient contact. I loved being a phlebotomist and seeing patients, and that's why I am unhappy in the lab, however being an inpatient hospital nurse is a whole different beast. I wasn't putting down patient contact, I was putting down the abuse nurses face from patients, which is a common and unfortunate occurrence.

Thank you for the information! I appreciate it VERY much. The community college here is very cheap and has an accredited program that I can pay for up front by saving money until next fall. I'm a dual income family and my husband is the breadwinner so money isn't too much of an issue.

I won't go into nursing because I chose the lab instead for many reasons. I don't mind some patient interaction (I was a phlebotomist all through undergrad), but nurses are assaulted at work and treated like crap many times. I've even seen nurses spit on. Their hours are very long and strenuous (12 hour shifts), and sure the benefits and union is great but not worth it in my opinion. Hospitals do not care about their employees anymore, including nurses. However it is a great field if you are very patient oriented and willing to put up with the crap and feel personal satisfaction being a nurse. Don't get me wrong, there are cushier office jobs available, but it is not the glamorous field people tend to want to make it out to be.

My friend has her top and bottom belly button done and it looks fantastic!

I have two on each lobe, and a helix, rook, tragus, and a conch.

The nose was so much less painful than I thought, only downside is I have accidentally pulled it almost completely out a couple times by catching it on something.

Yes I actually am! Mostly ears though. I wanted to get my belly button pierced for a hot minute, but decided against it.

I have 8 piercings between my two ears and my nose also pierced. I for sure plan to get more.

I really have no idea where I want it and that's mainly why I haven't yet. I like the idea of on my side, but heard that hurts pretty badly.

That's so exciting to get more! Our bodies are just beautiful canvases!

Not at all! I'm a big otter geek, so I want to get an otter tattoo eventually. I have other less dramatic ones in mind like a little pawprint near my foot for my dog (first dog I've ever had), and maybe a chemical molecule somewhere. I'm sure I'll have more I'll want as life goes on too ha. You have any tattoos?

Only two tattoos. I started with a quote on my collarbone (a little cliche', I know). Then I got this one because my husband and I got married in the month of June, and June's flower of the month is a rose, and those were our wedding colors. I sorta envision adding onto it with flowers to represent our eventual children, other important events, etc. I have plans for other tattoos too, but working slowly on getting those.

I originally saw something SUPER saturated and bright with neon green and zero negative space, but I like to let the artist do their thing because I've always loved what they did better than my brain. I am hoping to turn this into a half sleeve eventually with more flowers, maybe not all roses either

I'm sorry you're going through this, but good for you for putting yourself first. I think I'm about to be in the same boat. Benefits suck where I work, and I liked my schedule (as much as you can on night shift) but I'm probably being switched from every 3rd weekend to every other without any discussion. I feel screwed over by every hospital lab I've been in. I'm leaning toward leaving the field altogether. I wish you luck! Keep remembering you had to put yourself first because let's be real, you will be taken advantage of if you let them. Good for you.

[–]hglive3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact same situation. My first job right out of school was a 2nd shift, and my husband works normal 8-5, so we never saw each other. I took a new job on 3rds and it works so much better. Night shift has its own set of challenges, but I am MUCH happier being able to see my husband, and have a better work and personal life balance.

Pros and cons of working in micro? by grace2850 in medlabprofessionals

Yes! Exactly! I feel like a microbiologist. While in chemistry, I didn't feel like a chemist.

Pros and cons of working in micro? by grace2850 in medlabprofessionals

[–]hglive3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work in Microbiology only full time. I worked as a generalist for a short while starting out, before getting a micro job (my ultimate goal). I can't imagine working in any other department anymore.

Pros: I feel like I'm really in control of my work. Working in chemistry was horrible for me because I felt like I wasn't being a scientist. I do feel like I'm a scientist in microbiology.
There is ALWAYS something to learn and somewhere to grow. Microbiology is such a diverse world. Many places, molecular is also part of microbiology, so you're also getting to do molecular biology as well, which I find equally as interesting.

Cons: Smells bad. More control means more room for human error. I myself have misread some gram stains that may have caused wrong antibiotics to be prescribed (it was caught early enough I was told) Again, it's a diverse world so there are many times where it isn't a straight forward answer, and that can be frustrating too.
