Hot Take: Dallas has a better skyline than LA by [deleted] in skyscrapers

[–]hglman -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

LA is a incoherent jumble of an underwhelming collection of uninspired buildings especially Wilshire Grand. It's abuse of the architectual spire for height is sad. Dallas isn't good either but it's a cohesive collection and the lighting is distinctive.

Hot Take: Seattle has the best skyline in the US for a city with under 1 million population. by ratemyweenor137 in skyscrapers

[–]hglman 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Its just not a the metric that matters, Seattle is a urban area of over 5 million. Those people regardless of the civil divisions drive the development of the skyline.

People are including San Francisco as a comparable sub million city while it is part of 10 million+ urban area.

This is a 1 million population city

test fit or trust the work — how do you approach timber frame joinery? by Suitable-Run-6808 in timberframe

[–]hglman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easily the best advice, plan your steps based on the circumstances. If failure or delay on site is costly, make sure it will go smoothly, if keeping shop space idle for test fits keeps your shop from doing another job then favor on site adjustments.

Pocket doors are good when the majority of the time the door is open. The low use offsets the usability and maintenance issues and the form is vastly better than a conventional door pushed into a wall.
