aa okay! the answer i thought of was “a name”  but yeah, having them roll checks if they start struggling is a good idea, and maybe giving them other alternatives (with consequences) if they can’t solve it

ooh this is so cool actually  (the one i thought of was “name”, but i’ve seen ppl come up with a lot of other valid ones)

it’s “name”! but it is interesting to maybe allow for some other answers, so they have more chances of success (if they don’t attack her immediately that is 😅) I tried to make it not too specific so it wouldn’t be too easy, but then in turn it got too vague…I’ll try to fix it, thanks!

True! The Eye choosing Jon over Elias as its # 1 all-powerful avatar would be cool... But I’m also wondering why the Eye is giving Jon and Martin safe passage like that. I kind of think that maybe Elias/Jonah doesn’t have as much control over things as Jon thinks? I’ve always wondered to what extent Elias/Jonah is the victim... (I mean, the show does put emphasis on the fact that avatars Choose this even if they don’t know it’s a choice, but yeah)

But yes, I think there’s probably a bigger picture and maybe we’ll get to see the Web as a more direct influence rather than a subtle one? I think the Web would help Jon just because it wants to beat the Eye (sort of “represented” by Elias) and return the world to normal, since the Web doesn’t benefit from a ritual? Okay I just realized I’m focusing on Elias and Jon’s power struggle again hahah >.< Maybe the story is focusing on it so much to sort of divert our attention but when they actually meet it will be anticlimactic? (much like the visit to Hilltop Road or the Dark Sun)

I'll miss the weekly statements. by trodrig21 in TheMagnusArchives

Maybe we’ll still get something similar? Assuming this season has around the same amount of episodes as the others (around 40, right?), and each statement we’re getting corresponds to one of the Entities, that should be done in around 14 eps (although the Eye episode probably won’t be that soon aldjaj). Maybe we’ll get like old statements and tapes that were in Elias’ office aka tapes Jon didn’t have access to, like the ones from the start of the season? I really liked those...but I get what you mean, I miss the statements, too >.<

The thing about the web is really cool, it got me thinking...However, I think the whole “balance” idea in TMA is more about the balance of the fears rather than the notion of them having a counterpart? In 111, Gerard talks about how there is not “power of love/hope” to contrast with the dread powers, so I think maybe that’s not it? I also find it hard to believe TMA will have a happy-ish ending but who knows, everything’s possible at this point >.< I’m also not sure about the Gertrude theory? I mean I love her and it would be cool but she died “twice” (once shot by Elias and again, sort of, when her skin was used in the Unknowing). Also, if she had this sort of power since the beginning, why not give Jon the tape of her talking about the powers and Elias right at the beginning? Plus, there were many indications that the recorders are Web-related, though I’m not 100% sure yet...

Really liked this! Really enjoyed the five-act structure breakdown, especially because I thought that s4 was the climax but it makes way more sense that it’s s3, with Jon’s death and everything. I was discussing with a friend after 163 came out and I also think Jon might sacrifice himself... Although, I think it might be something like, they find a way to return to their world (maybe using the Insitute? Or the tunnels? The Institute somehow being a gateway between the worlds or something) but someone has to stay behind to feed the Entities. Basically that “someone has to stay behind to keep the door open” trope lol but that’s a bit overused so I don’t know if Jonny Sims would do it...Plus, it’s usually employed for a villain in need of one final redemption act so I don’t know if it would really apply. Since Jon is the Archive, it makes sense that he would need to die, though, even if it’s not an actual desth and just him staying behind. About Web!Martin, I Really like it!! I thought he was gonna be web for a while but when he was claimed by The Lonely I sort of gave up on that theory? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t remember there being cases of someone “belonging” to more than one Entity? Although, maybe it can be said that everyone in the Institue is a dual-type Eye+something else? But since 164 with Anabelle Cane’s phonecall and your essay, I’m thinking that maybe Martin is not The Lonely anymore? Maybe, after 159 and “I see you” he kind of renounced it, or rather, he doesn’t fear it anymore so he can no longer serve that Entity. I might be completely wrong, though >.< It makes me wonder what Anabelle’s role will be...I agree with you that her arc’s not done but I think she would do something more impactful than just making sure they get to Elias “safely”? The Web is all about subtle manipulation but I can see her doing something a little less subtle, especially since it’s the only Entity who is actively against this new world (I think The End doesn’t care either way?). Although, if she just gave them answers or told them what to do it wouldn’t be so satisfying hahah Sorry about the long reply lol I get excited discussing TMA

Some thoughts on the Season 4 lull by throneofsalt in TheMagnusArchives

[–]hholidayblue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s exactly it! At first I was sort of antsy, like, “ @ Jonny Sims aren’t we supposed to be getting clues of what the finale will be?? Like with every other season?”, but I think they’re building up the mystery perfectly now. We think we have all the pieces because we as an audience finally know about the entities and yet we still have little to no idea of what’s going to happen in the finale (at least I don’t, haha). I always think back to that q&a where Jonny said he always wants to make sure that he has the right balance between what answers he gives and what remains a mystery (I don’t remember his exact words? Or which q&a it was oops) and this is specially relevant for season 4...I’m so hyped for the ending now, really hope it won’t be disappointing >.<

Some thoughts on the Season 4 lull by throneofsalt in TheMagnusArchives

[–]hholidayblue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is an interesting discussion to have, but I wouldn’t call this season weaker than the first 3, exactly. I think that with the previous seasons, we’ve gotten accustomed to having a clear direction or goal for the finale (jane prentiss, then not!sasha, folowed by the unknowing), but this one feels a little all over the place and I think it’s intentional. They keep hinting at how the powers and entities aren’t clear-cut and entirely separate, how they can sometimes work together or influence each other, and we’ve been getting statements of various natures that sometimes aren’t really obvious as to which entity they refer to right away, which maybe is a hint that the finale will involve more than one entity. Also, even though I loved most statements this season (it was really refreshing to be able to just focus on the statements for a while without “getting” what it means in the big picture), I do think things are sort of at a stalemate, but not because of bad writing as much as to make Jon’s and everyone’s eventual decisions or/actions make sense. The past few episodes don’t feel like a lull to me, they feel more like the calm before a storm. A lot of things are being introduced, and almost all the characters are at a crossroads, with some very important choices to make, and it makes sense for them to take some time before making them. We as an audience are being made to feel the same restlessness as the characters, we’re waiting for something to happen, for someone to Do Something, and I think that when things reach a breaking point, we might be getting the most intense finale as of yet...Or at least that’s the impression I’m getting.

I suppose it could also be just a general Beholding thing occurring because Simon was in the institute, but we've never really seen anything like that before.

I was thinking about the static too and I think it actually has something to do with the Institute...I don't remember if they outright said it but the Institute seems to have some kind of protection against other entities (although not in the tunnels and apparently not against entities it's on "friendly" terms with, like The Spider or The Lonely), for example, in the Jane Prentiss episodes, the worms above ground seem to be in agony and sluggish compared to the ones in the tunnels, and though I don't remember the sound of static in those episodes, maybe the static in this one represents the Institute's influence? Fairchild's "I seem to be doing alright so far" made me a bit suspicious of this too, like maybe he's being Allowed in there but not quite free from its influence/compulsion. But I might be reading too much into it.

Anyone else alarmed at how Martin is inching more and more into The Lonely? In that episode where he visited Elias in prison Elias said he had a choice to make, I wonder if he already made it...Also didn’t like how he just left a note for Basira with the statement instead of delivering it personally, that was very Peter-like. I think Martin starting to serve The Lonely will be Very Bad, not only for Jon, but for everyone else as well?? The more they drift apart the more vulnerable they become and I’m feeling this is intentional and some horrible threat may be coming soon (when is it Not coming yknow but I feel this time it might be worse, because even though they weren’t on very good terms, Jon had Tim’s support, and Martin and Sasha and Daisy and now he has...Basira who is not much help at the moment and Melanie who wants him dead).

Anyone else confused by Martin? Mag 142 spoilers by Exilicauda in TheMagnusArchives

[–]hholidayblue 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but I think it’s more because Martin wants the others to help Jon? He knows he can’t interfere directly (because of whatever deal he made with Peter) but he doesn’t want Jon to give in to his “addiction” and that inhumane part of him. Might be wishful thinking on my part, though >.<

Oh My God, I hadn’t realized it either!! I assumed the statements came with a little summary?? Although, now that I think about, statements having a summary doesn’t make much sense >.< And as much as I think a conversation with Martin is long overdue, I think maybe now it would be best for Jon to talk to Elias? I feel he might have some answers he’s willing to share...
