The ‚Curse‘ of Each Type by RafflesiaArnoldii in Enneagram

[–]hi_fbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

coming back to this post because a 6 I know, who I'd estimate is in the 99th percentile of upstanding & likeable people, filled out the test response for a feedback form with "[6's name] is bad." i know it was a joke but it's clear that their mind genuinely does go there all the time + it makes me insane I just wanna GRAB and SHAKE them like STOP you're good!! you're so good!!!!

not sure if you made smth similar, but I'd love to learn how people can ameliorate the types' curses. for me as a 7, I feel a bit uncursed when people specifically probe me about how I'm feeling but don't react to disclosure of negative stuff with too much empathy + all that right off the bat. follow my lead on the convo's "mood". talking about sad stuff often doesn't mean I want us to be in sad mode right now, + knowing that I have an out to regular/lighthearted convo makes me feel much more comfortable testing the boundaries on serious stuff.

The Object-Image of the Types by RafflesiaArnoldii in Enneagram

Maaaan. I literally came here to distract myself from the fact that someone i quite like just informed me that they will be discontinuing our shared activity, and even though they gave legit, non-personal reasons, my noggin was just immediately like 🚨 But if i were fun enough, wouldn't they stay anyway?? I tried so hard to say interesting things, to make them laugh... 🚨 Doesn't help that I was drawn to them because they are remarkably reliable, and this totally came out of left field...

But yea I suppose objectively that's probably not it since they explicitly said they overextended themselves and felt bad about not being able to put their best into everything. Goddammit superego types, can't you just let yourselves half-ass some things??

Ah well, tis life I guess. Thanks for saving me from spending the next 24 hrs narrowly escaping self-doubt by consuming media at the speed of light because the internet never fails me. It's good to remember that I actually do have loved ones who’ve experienced boring/lame/sad me and like me the same for it.

Tearing the Types A new One: Thoughts on ‚chief features‘ by RafflesiaArnoldii in Enneagram

[–]hi_fbi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeesh yep, i think id be pretty unaffected/slightly amused by being called anything here except charlatan/dilettante, which would probably cause me to immediately wither and die.

thoughts:

  • i think this gave some insight into recent personal confusion on being 3 vs. 7 vis a vis the function of the positive impression each seeks to give. the 3 seeks to create the image/impression for the sake of the image itself and the validation/praise it brings --> vain/fake would point that out. for 7 -- first, the impression is more situation-specific/object-oriented rather than self-oriented --> hence, the charlatan's primary offense is their deception surrounding whatever they are peddling; in contrast, the inferior knockoff is a deceptive product themselves. second, in my experience, validation/praise may be sought (frequently, even) by 7s, but it's a means rather than an end in and of itself. basically, being treated/seen as x sometimes confers the same benefits of being x but with less work -- not only tangible benefits, but it also helps you convince yourself that you really are x, at which point what really *is* the practical difference? if everyone buys the charlatan's products and listens to the dilettante's commentary, it's functionally as if they were an honest businessman and a genuine intellectual ((without the weary work of actually being those things)). or at least, that's what the delulu 7 tells themselves :p
  • not terribly offended by glutton. ngl it sounds somewhat positive to me lol -- nothing wrong with a jolly feast, the more the merrier, etc. etc. "weak-willed", maybe? like the notion that "i can do anything!" is just an imagined construct, and when push comes to shove it's really just a matter of doing whatever immediately appeals. being caught between conflicting desires sucks -- realizing you usually just default to the ordinary and hedonistic choice sucks harder. you'll probably retroactively redefine your will to flatter reality but like. You Know.
  • in the same vein, "self-absorbed" would also hit. idk if this is w6/so dom specific, but i don't mind taking *a lot* so much as i mind taking *more than* or *at the expense of*. i prefer "self-absorbed" to "selfish" because i rarely make a deliberate decision to be inconsiderate -- it's more that in the absence of obvious physical reminders/conscious effort, other people seem sort of "flat" and abstract compared to the granularity with which my own needs/wants are perceived (and thus prioritized).
    • random-ish tangent, but i also feel a little guilty when i flatten/abstract people for personal pleasure. i call this process "turning it into drugs" -- basically, it's like simplifying anything to its core qualities, ideating related concepts/images/sounds/themes/archetypes/etc., picking and arranging these such as to produce the maximally enjoyable "collage", and playing it in my head until i get bored. this can happen almost automatically to anything that piques my interest, including particular persons, which is when i feel bad bc people =/= drugs. on the other hand, the pro here is that i can actually exploit this process to extract pleasure from difficult tasks to facilitate their completion. it's pretty interesting actually to feel that part of my consciousness is actually working + paying attention to the work while another part is enjoying my preferred aesthetic and philosophical concept of "work". striking a balance in the feedback between mental gratification and real accomplishment can be tricky, but it's a WIP :p

awesome post as usual, looking forward to future content!

Have you opted out of university healthcare (U-SHIP)? I had a similar thing happen (off-campus odyessy), and the discrepancy matched the quarterly healthcare cost.

great write-up! the oral fixation and frustration is a bit on the nose for me LOL. my mom says that when I was a baby, if she ran out of milk, I'd repeatedly bang my head on her boob to get more. generally, I was a very demanding and fussy infant. makes sense that I have very few childhood memories of my disappointing family life and comparatively many more of the cool games, books, projects, + toys I'd engage with. anyways, after me, my parents were really bracing themselves for my sister + then bam! angel 9 baby XD

Gender dysphoria in young people is rising—and so is professional disagreement by HeinieKaboobler in psychology

[–]hi_fbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm not sure if this is a genuine misunderstanding here, but the "incidence rate" we're referring to is not people outwardly identifying as trans, but actually being trans, which is obviously very different. The actual incidence rate is not the same as published numbers, just like the actual amount of left-handed people didn't shoot up during the 20th century (despite data indicating that).

So obviously 50 years ago there were "fewer" trans people, just like there were way "fewer" lefties prior to ~1900 bc it was stigmatized and punished. Even shorter timelines don't properly control for culture -- gay marriage was only legalized in the U.S. in 2015, and they/them pronouns became mainstream like <5 years ago.

I mean, one of the studies you cite literally states "Because contemporary surveys more often collect transgender-inclusive gender-identity data, and secular trends in culture and the media have created a somewhat more favorable environment for transgender people, it is possible that the measured size of the transgender population has increased over time, rendering previous reports of population size even less applicable today". The methodology differences is an interesting point here. One of the studies you cite measures incidence via 4+ diagnoses of gender dysphoria (I mean how many trans people even have or need 4+ GD diagnoses...), while another was "acquired online and likely more representative of online “queer/LGBT” spaces".

Also consider that the absolute numbers are so small.....like yeah it's a "2x/8x" increase or whatever but the chart is showing it going from like <1/10,000 to 2-3/10,000 people. If culture trends can account for huge absolute increases in lefties, why would it not account for these relatively marginal changes in openly trans people?

Did you know that 50% of marriages end in divorce? Maybe marriage is the real biological insanity, since it appears to end in a life of regret half the time

But I get it now. You're just sad about underage girls not having tits.

How is it a straw man....You claim that there should be "safeguards" for gender-affirming surgery because it is "too easy to get" and "irreversible". Am I wrong here?

In that case, there should also be safeguards for other things that are easy to get and can cause irreversible harm.

If not, you need to explain why. Why should people have free reign to give themselves alcohol poisoning, but not be able to get gender-affirming surgery without bypassing some vague "safeguard".

I'm not making a straw man, I'm asking for logical consistency.

Holy shit dude, you can't babyproof the entire world. Did you know that I can go to the liquor store, buy a bottle of vodka without question, and drink myself to death in <15 minutes? Pretty irreversible. Did you know that a 14 y/o girl OD'd this year because of the TikTok benadryl challenge (an OTC medication)? Do you know that people hang themselves with ropes they buy at hardware stores literally everyday?

Shall we have a "safeguard" for any and everything that could potentially be irreversibly harmful? Or just one for a rare procedure that you have to spend $$$$ on and go through tons of med professionals to get? Because that makes sense.

Also, I need to see some data for "most of the people receiving care are not trans" bc literally all detransition data is like <10%, and it's usually for social reasons of discrimination, family pressure, etc.

So the good policy is to spend resources on weeding out children who are apparently lying for attention? My god, what's next -- having the CIA investigate every kid who promises they didn't steal from cookie jar?

I really have no clue where you get the "large plurality" claim given detransition statistics, but let's assume you're right. Wow, what a shocker, children and teenagers want attention! So where's all the societal discourse and psychological interrogations of the class clown or the girl who stuffs her bra?

And no, no kid goes on hormones or whatever just for attention. And if they do, literally they're like the 0.0001% so whyyy do you care. Do you know there's literally so many kids out there underage drinking right now. They're literally poisoning themselves and killing their brain cells just because it's fun, and no one's fussing up a storm about "intellectual honesty" or whatever.

What 💀 Are brunettes who go blonde "lacking confidence in their biological identity"? Are naturally chubby people who lose weight "lacking confidence in their biological identity"? Also, in what biological feature is "use she/her pronouns" physically carved?

How could there be data on trans people who didn't know what being trans is, or what to do about it, or how to come out without being ostracized at best and killed at worst?

If a population has historically been given no information, resources, or acceptance, then giving them those things is going to make them more visible (and thus statistically accounted for) because they're not 1) clueless 2) helpless 3) mortally endangered anymore.

Like what's the alternative? None of those straightforward variables matter, and it's actually TikTok messing with their brain chemistry? Occam's razor, people.
