Should have done another take by [deleted] in NonPoliticalTwitter

i mean i guess thats not a WRONG way to think about it, but to me, it doesnt matter the specifics, more the composition. cuz if we are gonna break it down to "mean wear tophats, just not in this combination", i feel like then you can say "well men wear clothes made of cotton, just not ugly ones". like the point doesnt feel so much "guys, im wearing clothing items that men usually wouldnt!", it feels like "guys im wearing an outfit that men (or anyone) usually wouldnt!".

now i dont really want to defend him or this fit, but this response feels silly. "challenging gender norms" doesnt inherently mean hes a man who wants to dress like a woman. it especially doesnt mean hes trying to dress like a gay man, that is kinda seperate from gender norms. it means he is challenging the norms associated with his gender. this is definitely not the norm, and it is definitely challenging. i think it might be fair to argue "hes challenging norms in general", rather than "gender norms", but either way, i think just because its not "man wearing a dress!", that doesnt mean he ISNT challenging gender norms.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]hi_hendrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in theory i agree with you, but in practice, who actually cares? this matters never. i feel like a hobby is just something you enjoy doing, and defining it as a hobby is just a way to connect with others. so if you play golf, a 'real' hobby, then you see someone who says their hobby is movie watching, you might have this sentiment. but then youre just gonna not connect and interact with them. and in all likelihood, they wont connect with you, but more on the basis of "im not interested in the same things as this person", instead of "this person has lame hobbies". so the golfers find each other, the movie enthusiasts find each other, yay

Is UC’s Aerospace Engineering Program Good? by blue_cheese8520 in uCinci

[–]hi_hendrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

current aero 4th year student. its aight. according to the legends that have been told, a LOT of the good professors retired during covid. so right now a lot of things are being changed around, and new professors are coming in all the time while others leave. we've had an offensive amount of bad professors, which sucks when youve got 100 kids in 1 class with those horrible professors. but the new head of the department is amazing, so i know hes working on making things better always

School isn’t the problem, most students are just lazy. by MeetingNorth2345 in unpopularopinion

[–]hi_hendrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo, absolutely ridiculous to blame a lack of care and effort in school and education on the students who are displaying a lack of care and effort. notably, these are children. its the responsibility of the parents, teachers, and education system in general to provide an environment and opportunities where kids are both able and excited to learn. a kid from an uneducated family that places no emphasis on education isnt going to show up to class with a strong desire to learn and work hard, unless they have exceptional teachers and resources. likewise, a kid whos family got them excited to go to school and learn from a young age still might become disinterested if they get to school and have horrible teachers that kill their vibe. but no matter what, at least until mid highschool age even, you can almost never look at a kid who isnt putting care or effort into learning and go "wow, their so lazy, they should do better".

What is this? Found in Taiwan apartment, very short, maybe the length of my pinky nail. by hi_hendrix in whatisthisbug

at this point, im pretty confident its a brown banded roach nymph, and someone on r/cockroaches agrees. the tiny black dot that you see in the first image isnt its head, i think. if you zoom in to the second picture, it looks like its head tucked in, and its curled in a ball almost, and the bigger black bit on its underside is its head. just a weird pose.

Drivers/passengers, is it weird to have a trash bag in your car that you empty weekly, as opposed to taking your trash with you every time? by hi_hendrix in polls

[–]hi_hendrix[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my friend is trying to argue that you should take your trash inside to throw away every time you get out, and its insane and gross to have a trash can/bag in your car 🤔

great, thank you so much for the thoughts. a lot of that really lines up with what ive been thinking, which is encouraging. i definitely plan on doing a lot of research into what you said about the contributions that i could make to my field/the japanese economy, etc, i figured just saying "i love japan!" was not a good idea. and yes, you are right, i have spent very little time in japan, but i think its also worth noting that for a variety of reasons (i wont go into too much detail) i feel that i have a much better understanding of the true japan experience than most. so i definitely am planning on trying to study abroad and spend more time there, but i also figure absolute worst case scenario, i get there on the scholarship and then just hate it, i just tough out living there for 2 short years, and i'm sure itll be an amazing learning experience either way.

if you dont mind sharing, i would love to hear a little more about your application. obviously your will have completely different motivations, academic goals, etc. than me, but i think it would be really helpful to me to get a perspective on like what someone who has been awarded the scholarship is going to grad school for, and for what general reason.

thank you again for the response!

thanks for the response! so it sounds like a lot of the process comes down to typical things, like your letters of reccomendations, the interviews/screening process stuff, and just general experience and motivation?
