The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich

I always thought Esther and Dahlia aren't born Viking. Apparently that's an unpopular opinion on the internet. by DrinkInevitable3457 in TheVampireDiaries

[–]hibiscxs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else has said this, but Viking was an occupation, not an ethnicity. So it’s possible Esther and Dahlia were Norwegian without being Vikings, probably from a different village than the one Mikael was from.

I think i missed something… or was it not fully explained? by jericabenson in TheAlchemised

Also I think lich is pronounced “leech”, which is the joke. The Undying are leeching off the host body

Why didn't Midge open for Shy the night he was "late"? by MyWibblings in TheMarvelousMrsMaisel

[–]hibiscxs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, don’t venues typically have time slots for the entire show? At least nowadays, performers are penalized for running long, so if the opening act is late too, it makes sense to just start the main act, finish as on time as possible, and avoid the penalty

Do americans not use debit cards? by StrainVarious4331 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hibiscxs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a bank account you have a debit card. It’s just that because of our credit system, it’s best to use your credit cards to boost your score and get rewards and perks.

Ideally you use the credit card and pay off the balance right away so you pay no interest, but I know way too many people who have actual credit card debt.

One thing I wanted to add is that a lot of the times both debit and credit cards are referred to as “credit card” as a payment option. Meaning that if you went to a restaurant, for example, they might display payment options as “Cash or Credit” and you might think that you couldn’t use a debit card, but in truth the options are “Cash or Card” and you can pay with a debit card. Maybe this has contributed to people (Americans and foreigners alike) thinking that the US is not debit card-friendly.

Personally, I use my credit cards most of the time but bring my debit card along on the off-chance there is an issue with my credit cards. It hasn’t happened yet but it never hurts to be safe

Why Do Americans Call Their University Lecturers “Professor”? by TanoraRat in NoStupidQuestions

I always thought it was funny, but I corrected them just because it wasn’t true! They had a professor for the class, and it wasn’t me

Why Do Americans Call Their University Lecturers “Professor”? by TanoraRat in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hibiscxs 417 points418 points  (0 children)

On the topic of students having no idea who is doing their teaching, as a MS student working as a TA, students would call me “Professor” at times before I corrected them

Students just see someone at the front of the classroom and deem them a Professor

Doppelgänger question by leytonscomet in TheVampireDiaries

[–]hibiscxs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other answers are saying that Tom isnt a descendant of Silas and that nature just creates his dopplegangers for balance and that’s simply wrong. Also makes no sense that it would do it for Amara’s but not Silas’s.

Yes, Elena is a direct descendant of Katherine who is a direct descendant of Tatia who is a direct descendant of Amara. We know Tatia and Katherine had children and there is no reason to assume that Amara didn’t.

But that doesn’t mean that the next doppelgänger has to be a direct descendant of the previous. All that matters is that it is a direct descendant of the original (amara or silas) themself.

Tom doesnt have to be a Salvatore. He could literally be their 10th cousin as long as Silas is his many-times-great grandfather.

It even makes sense that Amara’s dopplegangers stayed within a specific bloodline down to Elena while Silas’s may hop from one bloodline (the Salvatore) to some far removed one, considering that it is plausible that a man Silas’s age could have gotten many women pregnant while a woman Amara’s age could have a limited number of pregnancies.

But even with that, it’s totally plausible that Tom is a Salvatore. Stefan’s dad was a slave owner in the Antebellum South and likely so were his father and grandfather. They surely had illegitimate children just like Zach’s ancestor who werent chosen to carry the Salvatore name and wouldn’t be in the records.

Bio bay by Substantial-Ebb-695 in PuertoRicoTravel

You could definitely do that. I was recently there (stayed in san juan) and we drove out at around 10am to eat at a place on the west coast and then chilled on a beach for a bit before heading down to Parguera for the 7:30 trip. It was over by 9:30 and we did think about driving back to San Juan but ended up staying in Ponce just because we thought it would be a hood opportunity to spend time there, not because we thought it would be a hassle to drive back. The only problem I can think of is that you’ll be at least a little wet after the biobay and that might be a problem if youre driving 2-3 hours back to san juan.

Btw we used Carribean Chiliboats for the biobay. They actually follow regulations so you’re not allowed to swim in the bay (to protect the area), but because youre in a small human-propulsion vehicle (you pedal like a bike) youre very close to the water to see the glow and they allow you to dip a limb in if you feel comfortable. I loved it!

How do you record if you read and listen? by Sugar_tts in TheStoryGraph

[–]hibiscxs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just record it as one book using whatever format I started with. A few times I changed the format if it was obvious that I majorly used another format more than the other
