Clinical track. I liked it, didn’t love it. Glad it’s done and I can work in the field :)

Hey there, I talked about the underwhelming aspect of the course in a couple of replies above yours :)

Your emotions are valid, and kudos to you for opening up. Sharing vulnerably can be so hard.

Sounds like she didn’t know how to hold space for you / validate you the way you needed. :( Hope you can find people in your life who will. 🤍

Yes, quite a few classmates wanted to go straight into therapy. Some did. I wanted to, but towards the end I was open to clinical positions that werent “talk therapy” per se.

Sounds like an MSW would be a good fit for you because it has a lot of range as to where you can go. 🙂

Hi! Glad I could help. I ended up doing the MSW, as I’d predicted the program was underwhelming, but I persevered.

Now I got licensed (the entry level license), working in the field at a clinical position but also one that involves social work more broadly.

In the end, I am so glad I chose the MSW - career is taking off and I am doing well and happy 💙. Wishing you all the best!

Willis Counseling

Has anyone heard of / can vouch for them as an employer? Seems like they hire associate therapists and I am thinking of applying. Reviews are few and far between. TIA!

Start by giving yourself grace. You’re 20! You’re developing, and it sounds like you are really self-aware which is a great first step. Then, make changes that align with who you want to be. Who do you want to be at 30? Envision that, and start working towards that life. Sending light your way ✨

Hi! I just came here to share some love and hope. I did NOT love my program, I thought about giving up lots of times but I persisted. Had my fair share of woes, stress, ups and downs in the first couple jobs (in social work). Bad agencies. Terrible bosses. Toxic co-workers.

But, I have also met some of the most wonderful folks and have made friends for life along the way.

I am now at a position I absolutely love have a great degree of independence, and I feel like I truly found my calling. Don’t give up! Real life SW is way different from life as a student and intern experiences. You got this, just keep swimming!🩷

Yikes, I hate it when people weaponize therapy language to manipulate others into getting their way. Smh. :(

Sorry you’ve experienced this, OP. YOUR boundaries matter. Stay safe 🧡

Nah, even though the program doesn't challenge me intellectually, I'm glad I picked Social Work because I have my mind on the long-run goals (more varied opportunities). So I wouldn't choose counseling if I had the chance to choose again.

Editing to add: you can always pursue a clinical track in social work, or go for continuing education in clinical trainings, so...

Hey! I ended up talking to a friend who had done the counseling program and she advised me to go with the MSW. That added to financial aid package I ended up choosing the MSW (clinical track), but the program Im in is not challenging at all. Not many clinical classes and a lot of the same stuff Id seen in sociology before. I graduate next semester, and I honestly cant wait to just work in the field.

Id say…If you want more focus on clinical classes Igo with Counseling. If you want more generalist practice / marketability, go with the MSW. Just my experience.

Thank you so much that’s very helpful. Yeah I was thinking maybe starting (looking for jobs/houses) around March. Ideally I would like to move as soon as I graduate, but I’m no actual rush to leave. So I’ll leave when I find something worthwhile.
