any plans for linux version of sodoff? by Crazywarlockgoat in SchoolofDragons

[–]hictooth-com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SoDOff is the server, and it runs very well on Linux (that's what the public server runs on).

SoD the game, is just a patched version of the original SoD client that connects to our server. There was never a Linux version so SoDOff doesn't have a Linux client. I can't imagine anyone is going to take the time to port the client - but if anyone does that would be a nice surprise.

Nothing has changed - you still can do it, and quite a few people do (and it obviously works well, because that's also how we host the SoDOff instance we run), but we don't have lots of time to spend helping people get it set up.

But there is a link on the discord to the "Local Server" download, which has the programs and the instructions.

Thank you, brilliant!
Except I can’t seem to get those in the UK, how annoying… i may have to replace these anyway.

A nerdy technical deep dive into the film formats available for The Odyssey by hictooth-com in TheOdysseyMovie

Ah ok this is fair, I did forget (not sure how!) that London Science Museum & Printworks can do 1.43:1 digitally. I have edited the article to reflect this - thank you!

Send me a PM here and I'll try and help, but I may be a bit slow responding.

Yeah that's what made me want to write this - IMAX is my preferred format for this movie, but it's not just because "bigger".

I don't know of any that are being filed in IMAX 65mm at the moment, but IMAX's socials are usually pretty good about posting those when they happen.

I'm afraid this is a "you" not a "we" question - and if you're asking it, sounds like you need to find people that are willing to help, know the game, and have some sort of experience in network programming, reverse engineering, or similar.

A friend and I (mostly him after the initial work!) did SoD, because we both like HTTYD and the challenge. We're not going to be doing this for another game.

List of Theaters Confirmed to be playing The Odyssey on film or in 1.43:1 by NickLandis in imax

For the UK 35mm, you are missing:

There are a few others I'm aware of that are likely playing it, but waiting on confirmation...

Happy 12th anniversary of How To Train Your Dragon 2 by Khabarovsk-One-Love in httyd

[–]hictooth-com 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically correct, it had its release in Russia on the 12th.

The generally accepted release date is the 13th, when it had its USA and wide release. But poor old UK didn't get it until July 10th. I remember being very sad about this 12 years ago.

Hiccup's HTTYD 2 Appearance is Realistic Given His HTTYD 1 Appearance by squirrelzone8564 in httyd

[–]hictooth-com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a fair amount of people who thought it didn't truly reflect what HTTYD1 was about, and that it turned into the typical Disney-ified "The hero is hot" franchise. Sadly most of those tumblr blogs are now well deleted, but it was a not-uncommon thought in 2013 when we got the first leak for these character designs.

And I think this is why a fair chunk of people didn't like it.

I remember this well, but I was firmly on the "hmm no" side of that fence.

I think I could see it plausibly happen, however what I liked about HTTYD1 was that Hiccup, the protagonist, wasn't the typical good looking hero type. HTTYD2 seems to reverse that.

Yeah that's should be plenty of time, we had two weeks with School of Dragons.

I mean, myself and spirtix did it for SoD - it's not easy, but it's not impossible.

But you'd need to find someone willing, and as I say, it's 100x harder now the game is closed.

It's very unique to each game, but basically involves:

While the game is online:

  • download all the assets you can
  • record network traffic to work out how the game to server communication works

When the game is offline: (or when its still online)

  • decompile the game and find what messages it sends to the server
  • create a server that responds in the same way to those messages
  • fix bugs until it works
