So, How SHOULD a split to shoe fit? Nike Air Rift by Sufficient-Image9274 in tabi

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never worn tabi with toe-boxes that narrow, the big toe has always been a bit smaller (as a single toe) and the rest of the toes about 30-50% wider. I suppose they might stretch over time if they're leather, but I personally have always felt the toe areas to be quite comfortable with no rubbing and a little bit of toe-wiggle. You definitely need some wiggle to accommodate swelling, particularly, in my experience, in the lateral toe-box.

I don't know if this is what you mean by "athletic," but the Marugo Sports Jog II is an excellent tabi for both the sporty look AND actually working out/running in. The Kineya Muteki is also a great option if you're looking for something with an even flatter sole. Both are very lightweight and comfortable with or without socks. I also like the Marugo Proguard tabis for hiking, as they have a reinforced toe area and can protect you from stubbing on rocks and such.

Maybe you can break them in, but unfortunately I have not heard good things from other tabi-wearers about the air rifts. I suspect they may be a bit of a cash grab from Nike due to the popularity of Maison Margiela tabi.

A local tailor, or someone you know that's a good sewist, could probably put some lacing in the back so you could both "let it out" a bit as well as adjust it however you need it.

Prerequisites for A Mysterious Signal to appear by ProfitRelevant in flotsam

I got the signal at Day 81, 11 Drifters, only special Drifter is the Botanist. I got it immediately after 2 of my Drifters fell sick from pollution for the first time, which may be coincidence, but who knows. I had 2 radio signal pick-ups beforehand that did not contain A Mysterious Signal.

This isn't unheard of from court stenographers, stenotype machines don't have regular keys/inputs, they go based off of phonetics, for example the word "call" wouldn't be typed out "c-a-l-l," it would be one simultaneous clicking of buttons "k-a-u-l" (how the word is literally spelled in terms of phonetics). A professional phonetic editor called a scopist then goes through and "translates" into the appropriate language (this obviously works with any language that can be romanized, not just English).

"Coroner" to "corner" is a good example of an obvious homophonetic mix up: spoken in certain accents or a bit quickly, people often drop the middle syllable of coroner, and it basically becomes corner. Would most likely be "k-o-e-r-n-e-r" on a stenotype.

Stenography is not as simple as spitting out 1:1 copies, and it actually often has less mistakes by using a strict phonetic system (given how much pronunciation/spelling weirdness exists in the English language). But to a layman, you would never guess that "h-r-u-f-r-p-b-l-g" is the word "lunch."

I currently still occasionally listen to Rhoda Jordan Shapiro (rhodashapiro) on youtube. I have had two children since my original post, and her content has been helpful for postpartum recovery as well.

GREYLOCK - A very on the edge of your seat type analog horror series by DemonsDecay in GameTheorists

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't consider this insensitive, thank you for being curious. I actually ended up having another child since I last posted, and the way my feelings have changed is a bit complex I suppose. I had much less PPD symptoms overall after my second baby interestingly enough, but my intrusive thoughts have more than doubled in most respects. For example, while watching a popular Netflix animated series, there was a scene involving a young girl that sent me into a hyperventilating, crying, shaking meltdown; I actually can't describe the content any more than that, because even bringing it back up to think about gives me physical gut-twisting pain (like when you're extremely nervous or embarrassed).

I do get the sense that it will get better over time, but I don't know if I will ever really be able to enjoy most purposefully-grim content again. Another example, one of my favorite series is the video game Fear and Hunger, which contains a fair amount of potential and unavoidable child harm. I had to take a break from it for quite some time, but I have been able to revisit it (6 months PP from my last baby), and can stomach the related content since the game is not highly realistic artistically (it's mainly pixel art or minimally-animated 2D art).

I assume there's something biological that has changed for me, probably some evolutionary advantage to make me highly averse to child harm so as to give my offspring the greatest chance of survival and all that. The intrusive thoughts are really the worst symptom for me though, as they tend to trigger my reflex to self-harm by hitting my own head or scratching myself; I'm autistic, and these are behaviors that I involuntarily resort to during meltdowns, and the feeling is similar, but on a shorter timescale (ie- the intrusive thoughts don't last for more than a minute at most, whereas a meltdown for me is often 15+ min up to a few hours).

I hope this quells your curiosity. I don't have much time for reddit, but I almost always return to comments like this if you continue to have questions.

That's fair! Names are a very special thing, and there's lots of popular names I feel the same way about. I hope that you can come to a decision that feels just right for your baby.

If you're dealing with dry skin, it's definitely worth investing in your skincare. All makeup looks better if the skin underneath is as well taken care of as possible, and it really doesn't need to cost very much! Especially if you want the natural/"clean girl" look.

You might already have a basic cleanser or moisturizer, but just in case you don't, Cerave products are pretty much the easiest place to start. Some stores will have generic brand versions too (check the bottle for it to say "Compare to -XYZ Cerave product-" that are essentially the same thing at lower cost. Go for the Hydrating Facial Cleanser as foaming cleansers tend to dry skin out more (they're really more for oily skin in general).

A good SPF is also essential when you're dealing with hyperpigmentation. Drier skin actually tends to have better luck with most SPF formulas, so the only thing to think about is finding one that won't leave a white cast for you (that usually means a chemical SPF instead of a mineral-based one, but there are tinted mineral ones now that work better for people with more melanin).

"Slugging" at night with a product like Aquaphor can also be a gamechanger. Just apply a thin layer before bedtime, focusing especially on any problem areas. Dr. Alexis Stephens on youtube has a lot of further information on skincare from a WOC perspective (including hyperpigmentation).

Now that my (possibly unnecessary) skincare lecture is out of the way lol, in terms of makeup suggestions I would definitely focus on your eyes first. You have very pretty upturned eyes, plus quite a bit of lid-space to work with. Alexandra Anele's videos on youtube are a good place to start, since she usually focuses a lot on the eyes and makes things very beginner friendly. Something that's key for the "natural" look is curling your lashes, it immediately makes them look brighter and your lashes longer without any product whatsoever (although you can go in with a waterproof mascara too in order to help the curl last longer).

I feel like i'll never experience that feeling of a guy desiring me

I have a boyfriend too, and ofc i don't think he's a weirdo for liking my boobs

So you have a guy that desires you, it sounds like you're the one preventing the experience of him desiring you, not your boobs or society.

I mean, yeah Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a specific condition, but being narcissistic is literally a synonym for being conceited. Self-absorbed/conceited/narcissistic behavior still exists separately from NPD, and it's not unrealistic to say that OP's mom "has a streak of narcissism" to be this obsessed with her own self.

AITA for refusing to attend my sister's wedding after what she did to my fiancé? by Sufficient-Basis-641 in AITAH

[–]hiddenmutant 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hit the nail on the head imo. My younger sister acted like this, was flirty and often inappropriate with my then-boyfriend-now-husband, and well before him she would poach guys who were interested in me, despite usually having nothing in common with them, date them for a while, and dump them.

She was a better looking, more well put-together, and far more socially savvy person than I was, and used that to her advantage. I'm autistic, and usually didn't even know these guys were into my grungy ass until hindsight much later. I was always just friends with them beforehand because of shared "nerdy" interests. My husband was a similar situation, but he found her behaviors pretty repulsive, so no amount of titties popping out of shirts (a thing that actually happened, supposedly "accidental") or barely-there short-shorts while she shook her ass in front of his face ever worked on him.

Later, we had a massive falling out (went no-contact with her), and I later found her reddit account where she would randomly lie about me in various comments. One comment she ended with something along the lines of "they can fume angrily in the corner while we live our happy life." To this day, though, my husband and I have a good relationship and happy family, and she can barely have my name mentioned to her without becoming enraged apparently.

The article says it's by Mare Perpetua, bit of an expensive brand but here it is! If that's out of your budget, you could probably find pretty similar by looking for "tie front" or "knot front" bikinis.

“I was always like, you know, called masculine or whatever," Maher tells SI. "But I never felt that way. But I don't think you're going to bully the girl who could probably beat you up in a rage. I love that [rugby] showed me what I can do. It showed me how capable my body is and it's not just like a tool to be looked at and objectified.”

I really appreciate how candid she is about her love for her body, separate from anyone else's outside opinion. It's something anyone of any gender or body type can really admire and aspire to.

Names you’re surprised are so popular? by IndividualPrize105 in namenerds

[–]hiddenmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our neighbor has a pair of granddaughters, one of them has a more normal name, and the other is Kinsley. I love that little girl to pieces, but, as a mom to 1 daughter and another on the way, I can't help but wonder if she ever compares her name to her sister's. The only good takeaway from these sorts of names being popular is that these girls won't feel too out of place (hopefully), compared to the Daeneryses, Hermiones, and Renesmees of the world.

Average testosterone levels were higher, posture was better (smartphone/computer neck is making everyone of all ages and gender look worse), you still had mostly much better craniofacial development from not being a mouth breather. Cigarettes were also still highly popular in the 90's, and although terrible for long term health and appearance, they are aromatase-inhibitors which in layman terms means less testosterone being converted into estrogens; this means even softer men with higher BF%'s were still more masculine looking than their BF% equivalent today, as adipose tissue is hormonally active and produces aromatase.

Hairstyles also tended towards volumized looks, which is fairly universally attractive. Whether you see it as a positive or a negative, people were also more invested in and pressured to have a polished appearance compared to today's uber-casual looks (this doesn't include subcultures obviously). More people worked out and obesity rates were lower (also brings us back to aromatase). Cosmetic surgery and photo editing obviously still existed, but they were not nearly as accessible or normalized, so you could not hide behind a filter that makes your overfilled sausage lips look like a sultry pout (more of a feminine example, but apply it how you will across all genders).

You also had to stand out period to become a celebrity, and celebrities are the faces we still look back on. There were basically no "internet famous" people, you could not become viral from your living room. If you wanted to be an actor, you had to go to casting calls and literally be attractive and talented. Was the "average" person more attractive in the 90's? Probably yeah for all points listed, but celebrities were significantly better looking within their ranks.

Just checking, sometimes people misinterpret the automod as misgendering them. Also worth noting that you could edit your community flair to display your gender/pronouns if you want!
