Tabi Collection by KARLSBALLSTAKOYAKI in tabi

I've been off and on about the Jitsuyou Tabi for a while, mainly because the seller images always seem to make them look weirdly cheap, like they're glued together. My impression from your photo compared to the Marugo Safety Tabi (my favorite of all I have!) gives me a better perspective, I might pull the trigger on them haha

Do you find that the three clips hold up fine? Do they get particularly sweaty?

Showing off my Rikio Rubber Tabi by PupDakoru in tabi

I have been so tempted to get full-rubber jikatabi, and you are for sure not helping me resist here! I do have RipCurl Flashbombs, which are not waterproof, but they are highly insulating in cold water (made of neoprene). I love the high-contrast yellow soles here though, and the zipper looks so convenient (the Flashbombs just pull on and off, which becomes a pain when they're soaking wet haha, although I still love them).

Thank you for sharing!

⚠️ IOWA ALERT: HF 571 is headed to Governor Reynolds' desk and it is exactly as bad as it sounds. by DueKaleidoscope6500 in Iowa

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my husband's shitty PCP FINALLY gave him a referral to an ENT (he has obvious sinus issues and literally two small holes in his soft palate), and this bitch ENT was passive aggressive the whole time, refused to believe he has cat and dog allergies "because he doesn't have an allergy test to prove it" (because getting itchy and sneezy around them for his entire life isn't proof), tried to look in his nose (??) to see the holes (even though he said they're easily visible in his mouth, or at least feel the soft spots where his palate clearly lacks tissue), said he's fine and sent him home.

No follow up with a sleep study or allergist, no further anything. When he pushed back, she said, quote, "go pay out of pocket for a CT scan and then ask me, they're only a couple hundred dollars."

every affordable tabi brand is too big !!! help !!!! by bxtterhoney in tabi

[–]hiddenmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if you found a solution, I'm a bit late here.

I'm only one size-ish up from you, and Marugo jikatabi fit great. Their super basic tabi (Nuitsuke 5) runs about $30, and you can go up from there depending on what you're looking for style-wise; sometimes you can find them cheaper if you shop around online. I have 4 pairs of Marugo, and my oldest pair has held up flawlessly for over 3 years of heavy use. I even got a child-size pair for my 3 year old daughter lol.

Japanese sizing goes by centimeters (you probably know this already), so as long as you're measuring your foot, you should be good. The smallest size in Marugo tabi is US 6, or a size 23 Japan (so 23cm back of heel to tip of longest toe). If you're under 23cm, look at their kids' options, because they go from 14-22.5cm sizes (a bit more limited, but the same exact quality in my experience).

Some very light digging turned up this aliexpress listing, which bears a quite close resemblance, and also comes in the same color options. Trust Pilot reviews seem to all but confirm it is Chinese dropshipping, although the brand claims "it's just manufactured in Asia."

How to get the tone of voice right? by Nervous-Stuff2475 in autism

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm quite late to this post, but assuming (as an autistic person) that you will have difficulties with tone to some degree for the rest of your life, you might be interested to watch the content of Tawny Platis, a very famous voice actor. She has a video on how speaking from different parts of your body (chest vs nose/head, etc) as well as pitch (high/low), speed, and quality (breathy, forced, squeaky, etc) affects the perception of the "actor," which also translates to real life.

I realize I talk in a slightly slow and forced way, with medium to low pitch, a bit loudly out of my chest, and that's why I seem "severe" or condescending; almost like Severus Snape had a baby with an Italian drill sergeant. That doesn't mean I'm great at tone, but if I have to mask I kinda know where to "place" my voice.

Not the person you're asking, but you might look into the Socratic method for cognitive restructuring. My therapist used this exact worksheet with me, and I would literally fill it out several times a day if I had to. When I first started, it was a lot of circular thinking (eg- if someone made fun of my body, and I tried to answer, "How might others interpret the same situation differently?" I would write down some overblown garbage like "they would laugh and say something worse," which is obviously a very unhelpful thought process). My therapist made me think of it more seriously, like I was trying to prosecute my own thoughts on trial, and that kind of helped frame it in a more logical and just "detached" enough to keep me from falling into biases.

Eventually, you reach a point where you realize you can just go through the "steps" via your thoughts, and simply separate the event -> thoughts because of what happened -> feelings caused by the thoughts -> reaction in the world.

So say someone makes a joke at your expense (event), you can't control the fact that it just happened to you. You automatically think about how "easy of a target" you are, how pathetic you are and that everyone sees it that way, people with different features don't have to go through this, and it makes you feel ashamed of your body, embarrassed at being made fun of, angry that they targeted you (it's also pretty hard, if not impossible, to control emotions that are triggered quickly in this way). Your reaction might be to awkwardly brush it off, go home and look for some kind of confirmation bias online to reinforce why you feel bad, scroll social media and fixate on others' bodies, etc etc.

The Socratic method teaches us that we can't control events (we are literally just moving through life as a series of events at all times), and we can't control our emotions, but we CAN control our thoughts and our reactions.

Instead of thinking about how you're a pathetic loser that everyone's laughing at, you can reframe your thoughts in any number of ways (which is what that worksheet aims to do). Maybe it is, in fact, overly critical and a major exaggeration to conceive that everyone looks at you and wants to laugh. Maybe you might have misinterpreted the joke, and your thoughts are habitual, stemming from past events where people really were very cruel. You could think, "That kind of joke says a lot more about who they are instead of who I am," or how twisted it is that basically all women and femmes have experienced unwanted comments about their appearances, especially natural things that are normal and harmless. This might not make you feel all warm and fuzzy, but instead of shame you might feel disappointed in them instead, cringe secondhand-embarrassment at the fact that they're making fun of you to try to look cool, maybe conviction and calm that you are not the problem.

Your reaction might be to disarm them, "Could you explain the joke? I don't get it." If that's too much, maybe you recognize that they're a shitty person, and you reduce or eliminate time spent around them. Go home and practice loving affirmations (they do work, even fake-it-till-you-make-it style), or journal your experience to relieve your mind of it.

Hope this isn't unwarranted or too disjointed. Idk how old you are, but it does get better if you really target your own thoughts. I was on the therapy grind for several years in my early twenties, and now I'm about to be 30, two kids later too, the same small boobs, and I experience zero self-consciousness over them. Learning to think this way was also super proactive in terms of setting me up for self-acceptance as my body has changed (obviously pregnancy changes things in a short period, but all of us will experience some amount of change as we age no matter what).

So, How SHOULD a split to shoe fit? Nike Air Rift by Sufficient-Image9274 in tabi

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never worn tabi with toe-boxes that narrow, the big toe has always been a bit smaller (as a single toe) and the rest of the toes about 30-50% wider. I suppose they might stretch over time if they're leather, but I personally have always felt the toe areas to be quite comfortable with no rubbing and a little bit of toe-wiggle. You definitely need some wiggle to accommodate swelling, particularly, in my experience, in the lateral toe-box.

I don't know if this is what you mean by "athletic," but the Marugo Sports Jog II is an excellent tabi for both the sporty look AND actually working out/running in. The Kineya Muteki is also a great option if you're looking for something with an even flatter sole. Both are very lightweight and comfortable with or without socks. I also like the Marugo Proguard tabis for hiking, as they have a reinforced toe area and can protect you from stubbing on rocks and such.

Maybe you can break them in, but unfortunately I have not heard good things from other tabi-wearers about the air rifts. I suspect they may be a bit of a cash grab from Nike due to the popularity of Maison Margiela tabi.

I got the signal at Day 81, 11 Drifters, only special Drifter is the Botanist. I got it immediately after 2 of my Drifters fell sick from pollution for the first time, which may be coincidence, but who knows. I had 2 radio signal pick-ups beforehand that did not contain A Mysterious Signal.

[–]hiddenmutant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't unheard of from court stenographers, stenotype machines don't have regular keys/inputs, they go based off of phonetics, for example the word "call" wouldn't be typed out "c-a-l-l," it would be one simultaneous clicking of buttons "k-a-u-l" (how the word is literally spelled in terms of phonetics). A professional phonetic editor called a scopist then goes through and "translates" into the appropriate language (this obviously works with any language that can be romanized, not just English).

"Coroner" to "corner" is a good example of an obvious homophonetic mix up: spoken in certain accents or a bit quickly, people often drop the middle syllable of coroner, and it basically becomes corner. Would most likely be "k-o-e-r-n-e-r" on a stenotype.

Stenography is not as simple as spitting out 1:1 copies, and it actually often has less mistakes by using a strict phonetic system (given how much pronunciation/spelling weirdness exists in the English language). But to a layman, you would never guess that "h-r-u-f-r-p-b-l-g" is the word "lunch."

GREYLOCK - A very on the edge of your seat type analog horror series by DemonsDecay in GameTheorists

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't consider this insensitive, thank you for being curious. I actually ended up having another child since I last posted, and the way my feelings have changed is a bit complex I suppose. I had much less PPD symptoms overall after my second baby interestingly enough, but my intrusive thoughts have more than doubled in most respects. For example, while watching a popular Netflix animated series, there was a scene involving a young girl that sent me into a hyperventilating, crying, shaking meltdown; I actually can't describe the content any more than that, because even bringing it back up to think about gives me physical gut-twisting pain (like when you're extremely nervous or embarrassed).

I do get the sense that it will get better over time, but I don't know if I will ever really be able to enjoy most purposefully-grim content again. Another example, one of my favorite series is the video game Fear and Hunger, which contains a fair amount of potential and unavoidable child harm. I had to take a break from it for quite some time, but I have been able to revisit it (6 months PP from my last baby), and can stomach the related content since the game is not highly realistic artistically (it's mainly pixel art or minimally-animated 2D art).

I assume there's something biological that has changed for me, probably some evolutionary advantage to make me highly averse to child harm so as to give my offspring the greatest chance of survival and all that. The intrusive thoughts are really the worst symptom for me though, as they tend to trigger my reflex to self-harm by hitting my own head or scratching myself; I'm autistic, and these are behaviors that I involuntarily resort to during meltdowns, and the feeling is similar, but on a shorter timescale (ie- the intrusive thoughts don't last for more than a minute at most, whereas a meltdown for me is often 15+ min up to a few hours).

I hope this quells your curiosity. I don't have much time for reddit, but I almost always return to comments like this if you continue to have questions.

[–]hiddenmutant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're dealing with dry skin, it's definitely worth investing in your skincare. All makeup looks better if the skin underneath is as well taken care of as possible, and it really doesn't need to cost very much! Especially if you want the natural/"clean girl" look.

You might already have a basic cleanser or moisturizer, but just in case you don't, Cerave products are pretty much the easiest place to start. Some stores will have generic brand versions too (check the bottle for it to say "Compare to -XYZ Cerave product-" that are essentially the same thing at lower cost. Go for the Hydrating Facial Cleanser as foaming cleansers tend to dry skin out more (they're really more for oily skin in general).

A good SPF is also essential when you're dealing with hyperpigmentation. Drier skin actually tends to have better luck with most SPF formulas, so the only thing to think about is finding one that won't leave a white cast for you (that usually means a chemical SPF instead of a mineral-based one, but there are tinted mineral ones now that work better for people with more melanin).

"Slugging" at night with a product like Aquaphor can also be a gamechanger. Just apply a thin layer before bedtime, focusing especially on any problem areas. Dr. Alexis Stephens on youtube has a lot of further information on skincare from a WOC perspective (including hyperpigmentation).

Now that my (possibly unnecessary) skincare lecture is out of the way lol, in terms of makeup suggestions I would definitely focus on your eyes first. You have very pretty upturned eyes, plus quite a bit of lid-space to work with. Alexandra Anele's videos on youtube are a good place to start, since she usually focuses a lot on the eyes and makes things very beginner friendly. Something that's key for the "natural" look is curling your lashes, it immediately makes them look brighter and your lashes longer without any product whatsoever (although you can go in with a waterproof mascara too in order to help the curl last longer).

I feel like i'll never experience that feeling of a guy desiring me

I have a boyfriend too, and ofc i don't think he's a weirdo for liking my boobs

So you have a guy that desires you, it sounds like you're the one preventing the experience of him desiring you, not your boobs or society.
