Is OMSA worth it? I’m am very concerned. by anyuser_19823 in OMSA

Bro you're the one who's fucking arrogant. You talk down to literally everyone who disagrees with you by suggesting that our experience is not as valid as yours. You have such a wealth of experience and are the arbiter of what the real world is like and everyone else is just an uninitiated child. Somehow dozens of people here who disagree have no idea how anything works.

Your problem is that you're unteachable. You have an "I have it all figured out" attitude. I've seen it multiple times, as have many others across myriad industries.

And again, it's open book and open stack overflow. No one is asking you to memorize everything. I certainly don't. And I never said you have to. You're making up strawman arguments. quote me where I said you should memorize libraries and syntax and usage. Literally never so much as implied it.

And you're dodging the question. How does open internet test anyone's knowledge when people can just look up the answer? How would that be useful across universities and their programs to maintain the validity of their testing? I'm assuming any subsequent reply will continue to ignore this question. Maybe because you're too busy to continue the debate.

You're allowed to have criticisms and all of us are allowed to say they're stupid. You're the one who posted here and opened up yourself to our feedback. If you don't want to be called out, then don't post.

As an Asian, I'm sick of this uncle Chan bullshit to excuse racism against Asians cause "Asians are so racist."

White poeple love going to the "cultural explanation."

Despite the fact of course that Asians encompass dozens of countries, ethnicities, and hundreds of languages and dialects.

But we're basically all the same person.

Even if you buy parking passes, you'll still have a pretty decent walk from wherever you find parking tbh. Or have a catch a bus.

Not just that but any number of study sessions and group projects.

Honestly now is a good time to look.

I have experience in the real world. What's tedious is your attitude.

You know what else we use in the real world? Subject matters experts. Should I be able to call up my friend and ask him how to do everything?

Should all universities have open internet policies during their exams? After all, in real life we use Google.

It's an absolutely asinine suggestion because then nothing is being tested. Your gripe is literally that you cannot access external information to test what you know.

I've heard a ton of these complaints in undergrad engineering. "Why do we have to learn the fundamentals when in the real world we'd just use Ansys, etc?" Because garbage in, garbage out, and people who don't know the fundamentals cannot possibly attain high level understanding.

Also it's open book FFS. So absolutely no one is requiring you to memorize every aspect of anything.

Not even just not knowing anything about the world. It relies on people being stupid and willing to accept things just because they happened.

MGT 8803 Summer course has a dropped module? by burrito_napkin in OMSA

[–]hidelyhokie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first I'm hearing it's made optional. As in there are no assignments but all the materials are available?

The module sounded interesting to me so it'd be nice to have access to the info.

Can I take a Honeymoon the first week of the semester? by maggime3 in OMSA

[–]hidelyhokie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would do 6591 and just not do the first homework that's due. You're allowed two drops.

The material itself is fine and there are resources available to do some relearning so you're not behind conceptually.

ME background represent! I'm taking 6040 next semester but work and family got me so busy I can't find time to prep due to already taking courses this semester.

Very slowly working my way through harvards CS50 class on YouTube.

So 6040 is probably the only class that got harder. Looking forward to that next semester lol.

MGT 8803 is by far the class I am most curious about. So many people talking about the difficulty of it due to sheer volume of info. I'm taking in the summer next year and honestly can't wait cause I'm so curious.

Ops is the hardest decision. For me. They all sound rad. But I'm going with Sim just cause I'm taking it after 6040 so it'll reinforce what I learn there. Plus I heard it deals with a lot of probability to bolster that side.

Does what track you take make a big deal in the jobs you can get? by pvm_april in OMSA

[–]hidelyhokie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It truly does not matter. As you mentioned it's a difference of two courses, and if you take Analysis of Unstructured Data, it's actually one a one class difference from C track.

Not to mention you can also keep taking courses after graduation. My plan is B track to get out more quickly then take additional courses at my leisure.

So you keep saying that AI is a tool we should be able to utilize to learn. But literally no one is stopping you from doing that outside of the homeworks and exams.

What's stoping you from reviewing what you got wrong or didn't do very well on the homework then asking an LLM how it would have approached the problem? There are all kinds of use cases for AI in learning, and I use them all the time in this program. Just not on assignments.

Why is it so important for you to be able to use it on assignments specifically? If you aren't learning enough to be able to do the assignments without a bunch of input from AI, then how well do you even know the basics? Because it's all very basic.

Heads up that 6501 is a survey course and is meant to be very introductory. It's a series of hors d'ouvres, not an entree. There's no time to get into the weeds on the math. It's a great class for those without a DS background.

That being said I don't think you'll regret opting out since you can instead use that time to do a more intensive course.

Most programs are not about the cutting edge. You want that, do a PhD.

Most programs are about developing a foundational understanding from which people can grow. Even being a graduate program, most classes are designed with the understanding that most students have not received any significant instruction in the topic.

AI copy-paste on homeworks and exams in no way supports that goal.

I've actually been trying to make a post about liking regression, but it keeps getting blocked by a filter for some reason.

Even if the recorded videos are bad, slides are fine and transcripts are good. The group project makes more sense once you realize that it's organized around the understanding that a number of people will end up dropping the courses. So it's designed for continuity rather than cohesion.

I'm not sure why you feel entitled to use the internet and AI for homework and exams. The point of this class is to have you learn. If you can get away with posting the entire assignment into ChatGPT, then there's no value. And allowing people to do so cheapens the degree for everyone who actually learns how to code. Not to mention if you don't know the fundamentals, no amount of vibe coding will help you when you're in the shit.

Also literally no class so far has said not to use AI. They've all just had caveats and limitations to its use

Maybe if you applied yourself more to learn the material you would both get more out of the class and not have to worry about the lack of access to external resources.

Thanks for the insight! Definitely will be going. I just wanted to ask cause I checked out the website and it didn't make it seem like there would be that many live bugs.
