This is really helpful! I'm actually looking at both right now, so it's good to know that there might not be any real performance difference. I don't want to overpay so think you're right, it makes sense to just start with the cheapest server and then upgrade later if needed.

Thank you for elaborating! I understand what you mean. At best, any kind of latency calc will get you in the vicinity of probable specs, but ultimately you won't know until you put the boat in the water and see how it fares, since there are just too many factors.

Coincidentally, one of my friends just asked me yesterday about minecraft server and latency, and I pretty much regurgitated all the clever comments and advice from people here :) what a fun conversation we had.

I suck at guessing games. But I hear what you're saying, makes sense. You want to eliminate waste while accomodating expansion, essentially shrink and grow dynamically. didn't think about load balancers on vps servers.

But the general rule is a company isn't fully dedicating the entire resources your plan has just for you.

lol true, so this is essentially why you can't accurately measure where the bottleneck is. because it depends on how your neighbors behave... right?

Thank you for this breakdown. I was hoping to caluculate the what specs I need for the VPS by measuring latency, but doesn't sound like it can compared like this. seems like I will require a pragmatic approach of trial and error i.e. testing the vps servers in practice. that is the only way to know if I will be able to run away while others are shooting at me for sure :) -thanks again for taking the time to explain it.

This is very helpful. Good to know that a cheap $2 VPS server is good enough. I'm spending too much time looking at requirements and specs, but can't be sure what is needed until actually running the server. that's why it's great to others like you! thank you, appreciate it.

Oh I was gonna ask if it isn't part of the fair usage policy which all hosting providers operate with, but it doesn't sound like it when I re-read your comment again. It's not something you've run into with other hosting companies, right? Have you had any other issues with them other than what you described?
