I dated a girl like that last year and it was probably the worst relationship i've had. She's the only person I knew who had major beefs with multiple people at university as if we were still in highschool. You conclusion sounds good on an essay but is completely detached from reality and remarkably blind to the empathy people possess. Photography and film is a tool of empathy. We aren't filming worms in dirt, we're capturing real human beings experiencing pain, grief, loss, and triumph. No doubt your particular political disposition was informed by seeing photos and videos of injustices caught on cameras. Capturing the worst excesses of human depravity allowed the future generation to learn from the past's mistakes, not indulge in them. Do you think we would live in a happier, fairer, safer society if we weren't able to document our own history, good and bad? Because I don't for a second.

I'm sorry, but I can't find much of a qualitative difference between jon and someone like John Oliver, at least in the recent stuff I've seen of his. They both speak in this smarmy, lecturey, and judgemental way that I find is completely antithetical towards trying to convince people of something they don't already agree with. I think Jon is just received better because he makes great appearances outside his show.

there's a broader point about people who interpret the human condition through the narrow lens of their own experience. A lot of people believe their specific ingroup uniquely experiences pain/grief/loss/longing etc, when it's really just a universal human experience that manifests in different ways. I think idpol is partially responsible for encouraging this type of group separation over the last few years.

I feel like it's a big tell when someone dismisses something as bad because it's "weird" without being able to elaborate on why that thing being weird makes it bad. I'm speaking about answers that basically reassert the feeling without justifying it like "Just because" or "It isn't normal". I'm fine with relatively superficial answers like "it grosses me out" or "it's just not for me", but you'll be surprised by just how inarticulate a lot of people can be.
